01/31/23 • 42 min

The itinerary for my Celtic Invasion of Westport, Ireland is now online. Find out what my Firefly song, “Blue Sun”, has to do with Monopoly and Walmart. Get an Atlanta Food Recommendation. Then go out to eat with your own Celtery.

This is Sci Fi Pub Songs & Stories #264.

WELCOME TO SCI FI PUB SONGS & STORIES

I am Marc Gunn. This is the audio edition of my newsletter as well as the liner notes for the songs I record. You can follow this show at PubSong.net or send an email to pubsong@celtfather to sign up and get the MP3s for my songs featured in this episode.

3:10 - WHAT’S NEW: A NEW SHOW NAME

One of my weaknesses is sometimes I have to try something before I can see how effective it is. The past two episodes were called Atlanta Pub Songs & Stories because I wanted and still want to highlight things around Atlanta, where I currently live. The problem is I wasn’t sure what to do. Yes. I have a food recommendation coming up. But when I put myself in the shoes of potential listeners, like you, I just don’t see the Atlanta part as being useful for reaching an audience. More than likely, you’re interested in Sci Fi, fantasy, Celtic music and culture, or pop culture because that is what I do. Atlanta is not as essential to the music story even though most of my shows are located in this city.

And so, I’m pleased to introduce Sci Fi Pub Songs & Stories.

5:15 - UPCOMING SHOWS

6:25 - CELTIC INVASION OF WESTPORT, IRELAND

This June, I’m bringing a small group of people to Westport, Ireland. I’d like you to join me.

Westport is part of the Wild Atlantic Way. That’s a spectacular, scenic route from Irishowen in County Donegal all the way down the west coast of Ireland to Kinsale in County Cork. It’s broken up into 14 stages, two of which are in the area we are staying, Achill Island and Clew Bay, and Westport to Clifden.

5 Things You Should Do in County Mayo, Ireland

  1. Go to Matt Malloy’s Pub in Westport.
  2. Visit Westport House and take a train around town to get to know the history behind the Irish of County Mayo
  3. Hike up Croagh Patrick, This pilgrimage area has a story that St. Patrick himself scaled this mountain and fasted atop it for 40 days way back in 441 AD. It’s definitely a revered site in this area of the country, and can make for a great stop on any trip to the region.
  4. Take a boat out to Clare Island to visit O’Malley Castle, one of the castles owned by the Pirate Queen, Grace O’Malley.
  5. Take pictures all along the Wild Atlantic Way.

I completed the itinerary for the trip and already I think I scheduled way too much. There are so many fine castles, cliffs, and amazing things to see, not to mention the time I hope to spend in Matt Malloy’s listening to music. It’s gonna be an incredible trip.

I still have space for just two more people. If you’d like to join me in Ireland, hear me perform live in your living room, you won’t be sorry. It’s gonna be spectacular.

Check out the itinerary for the Celtic Invasion Vacations of Ireland 2023 and drop me an email to let me know that you want to go!

14:35 - STAND AGAINST BLUE SUN CORPORATION AND GET LOCAL

I loved Monopoly as a kid. I taught Kenzie it. After just two games, I was kinda done. The game drags on just way too long. Unfortunately, Kenzie is not done with it. She loves it and makes us play as often as we will let her.

So I finally figured out how to ...

Today, I get to introduce you to one of the people behind my music. For most of my career, I had the time and energy to do everything myself. All of the recording, editing, graphics, online promotion. I did it all. It was exhausting. It was also all before I got married and had kids.

I came to realize I needed help over the past ten years. So I put out a call to folks online. Miranda Nelson offered to help me with graphics. Three years later, she now does nearly all the graphics for my music and all of my podcasts.

So let me start by saying. Thank you Miranda for all your help and welcome to the pub.

How did you find my music and podcasts? What inspired you to want to do the thankless job of graphic design for a nobody musician and podcaster?

FOUND MUSIC AND PODCASTS & WHY

How did you get into Celtic culture and music? And how long have you been a geek?

HOW

So this is largely a Christmas podcast. Can you tell me a fun special Christmas moment in your life? Something that made you smile?

And finally, do you have any Christmas song requests that you’d like to hear?

Thank you so much Miranda. It’s great chatting with you.

In addition to the graphics she does for my podcast, Miranda has an online store at mirandanelsondesigns.com. She has some fantastic Celtic shirt designs through TeePublic, including a Firefly/Doctor who crossover shirt.

PUB SONGS & STORIES - The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem Biography #120
play

08/06/13 • 30 min

Today's show is dedicated to The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem. If you love Celtic music and you're not familiar with the group, you're missing out. They are one of the reasons Gunns & Drums is recording an album called "How America Saved Irish Music". They're a shining example.

Once again, the show is suffering from some technical difficulties. I hope you will bare with me as I work out all of the details to offer you an awesome live show. This audio recording is filled with clicks. The alternative is you can listen to the show on YouTube, however, the audio quality there is horrible too. So pick one and decide which is the lesser of two evils. Again, my apologies. I hoep you enjoy the show nonetheless.

I will be back next Tuesday morning for the next live show.

Oh! And if you have questions or comments, please post them in the shownotes, or on the YouTube channel. I want to hear your comments. You can also help me choose which song to play in the next show.

Happy St Patrick’s Day! I am Marc Gunn. I’m a rhythm and folk Celtic musician living in Atlanta, Georgia. This is the audio edition of my weekly newsletter.

I play traditional Irish and Scottish drinking songs. I also write songs inspired by pop culture, things like Lord of the Rings, Firefly, and Doctor Who. That’s why this is Sci Fi Pub Songs & Stories. But this week, I’m mostly focusing on St Patrick’s Day fun.

He responded: “FYI, we have these bags for fruits and veggies at the grocery store and they are awesome and you don't need to use the plastic bags OR have to put your stuff straight in the basket”

27:21 - STORY OF THE CAT CAME BACK... THE CAT’S PERSPECTIVE

I learned how to write a drinking song thanks to “The Cat Came Back... The Cat’s POV”.

First, let me point out, a drinking song isn’t about alcohol. It’s a song with a fun, easy-to-sing chorus. Sometimes it’s interactive.

“Wild Rover” has claps in the chorus. “Rattlin’ Bog” and “The Unicorn Song” have a whole bunch of motions that act out the lyrics. “Seven Drunken Nights” and “Big Strong Man” have phrases that the audience shouts back at the singer. These were the songs I was thinking of when I wrote the cat’s perspective of a famous folk song.

I never liked “The Cat Came Back.” It was cruel and I love cats. So I decided to rewrite the song using the melody of “The Moonshiner”. But I wanted to make it a call-and-response song. So I added “Ka-Boom”, “Gurgle” and more to the end of the verses. But when I finally decided to play it live, I had NO idea how to get the audience to interact with the song.

Eventually, I taught the audience the 5 different responses (five, really? What was I thinking?). I introduce each exclamation before the verse. But it’s still difficult to get them involved.

If you want to write a drinking song, keep it simple. One call and response throughout is best. Teach it at the beginning of the song. “Slainte Mhaith” is a great drinking song. It has an easy-to-sing chorus. But it also has a super easy call-and-response.

“When I sing slainte mhaith, you shout it back to me. Slainte mhaith! [Slainte mhaith]”.

Old Dun Cow Lyrics:words and music traditional

Some friends and I in a public houseWas playing a game of chance one nightWhen into the pub a fireman ranHis face all a chalky white."What's up", says Brown, "Have you seen a ghost,Or have you seen your Aunt Mariah?""Me Aunt Mariah be buggered!", says he,"The bleedin' pub's on fire!"

And there was Brown upside downLappin'' up the whiskey on the floor."Booze, booze!" The firemen criedAs they came knockin' on the door (clap clap)Oh don't let 'em in till it's all drunk upAnd somebody shouted MacIntyre! MACINTYRE!And we all got blue-blind paralytic drunkWhen the Old Dun Cow caught fire.

"Oh well," says Brown, "What a bit of luck.Everybody follow me.And it's down to the cellarIf the fire's not thereThen we'll have a grand old spree."So we went on down after good old BrownThe booze we could not missAnd we hadn't been there ten minutes or moreTill we were quite pissed.

Then, Smith walked over to the port wine tubAnd gave it just a few hard knocks (clap clap)Started takin' off his pantaloonsLikewise his shoes and socks."Hold on, " says Brown, "that ain't allowedYa cannot do that thing here.Don't go washin' trousers in the port wine tubWhen we got Guinness beer."

Then there came from the old back doorThe Vicar of the local church. And when he saw our drunken ways,He began to scream and curse."Ah, you drunken sods! You heathen clods! You've taken to a drunken spree! You drank up all the Benedictine wineAnd you didn't save a drop for me!"

And then there came a mighty crashHalf the bloody roof caved in.We were almost drowned in the firemen's hoseBut still we were gonna stay.So we got some tacks and some old wet sacksAnd we nailed ourselves insideAnd we sat drinking the finest RumTill we were bleary-eyed.

Later that night, when the fire was outWe came up from the cellar below. Our pub was burned. Our booze was drunk. Our heads was hanging low."Oh look", says Brown with a look quite queer.Seems something raised his ire."Now we gotta get down to Murphy's Pub,It closes on the hour!"

The Bridge Lyrics by Marc Gunn

Was it something I said that made you angry with me. Made you dig a deep river to keep you from me. Oh, the water is rushing, come to sweep me away 'Less I die of sorrow, I will cross it today.

I would build me a bridge a hundred meters long To see the other side of what I did wrong Well you say you don't hate me, but I guess that I'm scared That with a river between us, you'll no longer care.

I would build a boat, and paddle agaist all sorrow. And if I sail down the river, then I'll be back again tomorrow. I would face cold death, run and leap to your side. And if I fall in the river, I'll be warmed by your sight.

I would beg your forgiveness for the pain I've fed And I'd find the source of the river you've bled. Then I'd close the gates of the dam I built there. And never again will you have anything to fear.

Well I never knew that your tears ran so deep. But when I'ved dammed those tears, I will kiss your sweet cheek. I will hold you close 'till your tears finally cease. And I'll sing you a lullaby to bring you peace.

9:28 - THE STORY OF SPIDERWEBS

  • Inspired by the episode “Our Mrs Reynolds” from the TV show Firefly
  • Talked about it in episode #6 of In the Verse.
  • Mal: Now, think real hard. You've been birddoggin' this township a while now. They wouldn't mind a corpse of you. Now, you can luxuriate in a nice jail cell, but if your hand touches metal, I swear, by my pretty floral bonnet, I will end you.
Spiderwebs Lyrics

Bad men are bird dogging our town Dogging our town, Bird dogging our town Bad men are bird dogging our town We’ll lay a trap for them.

We’re gonna spin a spiderweb Spiderweb, Spiderweb We’re gonna spin a spiderweb That’s how we will catch them.

I’ll wear a soft cotton dress A soft cotton dress, soft cotton dress I’ll wear a soft cotton dress With a pretty floral bonnet on top

Will shoot them down in the spider web Spiderweb, spiderweb Will shoot them down in the spider web And celebrate our win

A pretty little girl has lured me in Lured me in, lured me in A pretty little girl has lured me in Declared her love for me

She caught my heart in a spiderweb Spiderweb , Spiderweb She caught my heart in a spiderweb Now how will this all end

She’s leading me to the end of the line End of the line, end of the line She’s leading me to the end of the line We'll put things right again

I’ll break free from her spiderweb Spiderweb, spiderweb I’ll break free from her spiderweb And never kiss a girl again

Come here little lady, May I meet you I meet you, I meet you Come here little lady may I meet you Guess it begins again

It’s all a game of spiderwebs Spiderwebs, spiderwebs It’s all a game of spiderwebs And everybody falls in

We got a wave from Johannes Rimmer: "A train is going from an Alliance supply depot to a small mining town at 200 kph carrying 25kg of medicine to treat "Bowden's Malady," leaving at 7:10PM. At some point outside of town, the train is robbed by Nishka's hired guns in a job that lasts from one commercial break to the next. How much distance away from the town did the Browncoats have to be in order to begin the operation in time? Alternatively, estimate the amount of force (in Newtons) Mal had to exert on Crow's chest to kick him into Serenity's intake."

32:57 "Blue Sun" by Kilted Kings from Name On My Soul

35:30 "Freedom Costs" by Bedlam Bards & Marc Gunn from Firefly Drinking Songs

The music business has changed. Streaming music is king. Musicians can no longer rely on CD sales to make a living. For that reason, I turned to Patreon to support my music.

Here's how it works. You pledge a buck a or more every month. And Your generosity allows me to keep creating. You get monthly music in this Geek Pub Songs Podcast, fun adventures in Celfather Music & Travel, Behinds the Scenes look at the life of a musician, and Stories from the Road. Plus, every month, I'll send you a free song, video, or concert recording.

This is one helluva deal for as little as a buck a month Please support what you love. Join the Gunn Runners Club today!
