In today's episode of Psych Talk, I speak with Julia Cowley, retired FBI agent, profiler in the Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU), and former forensic scientist and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation. Julia shares her journey to becoming an FBI agent and ultimately ending up in the Behavioral Analysis Unit as a profiler and what the training was like to get there. She describes what the BAU does and how it differs from what is shown on television. Julia talks about the psychology of criminals, namely common characteristics she has observed in her many years of experience. We then go into discuss the Joe D'Angelo (The Golden State Killer) case, which Julia was one of the lead profilers on. She gives a brief overview of the case for listeners, discusses some of the patterns of behavior she observed, and what she learned from that case.
The Joe D'Angelo case includes information about rape, murder, and ransacking. Listener discretion is advised.

Episode 17 | Enhancing Your Self-Esteem
Psych Talk
08/10/20 • 29 min
Self-esteem is confidence in one's own worth or abilities; however, many of us struggle with low self-esteem or feeling that we are not worthy enough. In today's episode of Psych Talk, I discuss low self-esteem, where it comes from, and how it manifests. Low self-esteem can come from a multitude of places, starting in early childhood, and even being able to identify where one's low self-esteem may derive from is a step in the process of overcoming low self-esteem. I also provide information on how to overcome low self-esteem and enhance self-confidence through applicable steps to take in your everyday life.

Episode 178 | Therapy is Political
Psych Talk
03/11/24 • 36 min
In today's episode of Psych Talk I discussed the concept of "Therapy is political". Many people have the belief that therapists and psychologists should not be political and, rather, be neutral on issues of injustice. I discuss how therapy is innately political and highlight various ethical codes that highlight therapists' ethical duties of justice, service, and advocacy. I discuss what the term "therapy is political" does not mean, as well as what it does mean. Further, I discuss client's rights when it comes to finding a therapist that aligns with them politically. Ultimately, the takeaway of this episode is that therapist is innately political and therapists remaining neutral on issues directly impacting their clients does harm, creates an unsafe space of clients who are directly negatively impacted by sociopolitical systems, and goes against what ethics require.

If you are listening to this episode in real time, you are likely aware of everything currently occurring between Israel and Palestine. I do not have ties to Israel or Palestine, nor do I feel I am the right person to be at the forefront of this conversation - we need to be listening to and learning from those who are directly impacted. However, regardless if if you are Jewish, Muslim, have ties to Palestine or Israel, or do not, seeing the news and media coverage is likely negatively impacting your mental health. Thus, in today's episode of Psych Talk, I discuss ways we can protect our mental health [as much as possible] when consuming upsetting media. I talk about how there is no right or wrong way to cope with what is currently going on and how we each have to do what feels best for us. Further, I provide a number of tips on ways we can protect our mental health while still being informed about what is occurring. Further, I discuss how to speak with children about what is currently happening (and has been happening) between Palestine and Israel. Although this episode was inspired by current events, the tips I share can be generalized to any news or social media coverage of horrific and upsetting information.

Episode 86 | Religious Trauma
Psych Talk
03/21/22 • 41 min
In today's episode of Psych Talk, I discuss the topic of religious trauma. Religious trauma can be defined as "pervasive psychological damage resulting from religious messages, beliefs, and experiences." Although religion and spirituality can have beneficial effects on individuals' mental health, for many religion is not a positive experience and can be extremely harmful. In this episode, I discuss what religious trauma is and describe various areas in which individuals have experienced religious trauma including sexism, purity culture, mental health, and messages about the LGBTQ+ community. I discuss the impact and outcomes of religious trauma, as well as ways individuals can start healing from their trauma.
This episode touches on many things that may be difficult for individuals to hear, whether it is due to their personal experiences or challenging beliefs that they previously held. I also acknowledge that much of the information shared in this episode may appear one sided, only focusing on the negative aspects of religion. This is intentional, as the focus of this episode is on aspects of religion that many may find traumatic, or at minimum, harmful.

In today's episode of Psych Talk, I discuss South Carolina House Bill 4624, entitled "Gender Reassignment Procedures". If you are not in South Carolina, I hope you listen to this episode and are able to take something away from it, as 321 anti-transgender bills have already been proposed across the United States in 2024. I give a brief overview of the bill, the problems with the bill, and how it will affect trans individuals, medical professionals, and mental health professions. I provide some research on outcomes of gender affirming care and how implementing this bill, and others like it, will likely cause more harm than good. Further, I give listeners action steps to oppose this, and other, bills, as well as some reflection questions for individuals to critically think on if they are in support of this or other anti-trans bills.

In today's episode of Psych Talk I chat with Pam Covarrubias, a podcaster, speaker, and coach, about Calladita Culture. Pam discusses what Calladita Culture is - part of the system that has kept women small, quiet, and unaccomplished - and describes how root of Calladita Culture is Machismo and Marianismo as taught in Latin America. We discuss how these messages are passed down to women and girls of various cultures, the impact of these messages on mental health, and how these messages are damaging for women and femmes. Pam discusses her own healing from Calladita Culture and how she helps other women and femmes heal too through inner child work and EFT, also known as "tapping". Additionally, Pam ends the episode with an invitation for women who have been subject to Calladita Culture, or cultures similar, to take the first step in their healing journey.

Welcome to Season 4 of Psych Talk! To kick off Season 4 I talk all about "high functioning" mental health disorders. "High functioning" is not a clinical diagnosis or term, but generally refers to individuals who struggle with a mental health disorder but from the outside, others are unable to tell. These are the individuals that are able to continue to function in their work/school and personal life; however, when alone and on the inside they are fighting an internal battle. Although any mental health condition can be considered high functioning, in this episode I specifically highlight depression, anxiety, autism, and OCD. I also talk about steps to take if you feel that you have a high functioning mental health condition.
Additionally, I provide some updates as to what I have been up to the past couple of months.

In today's episode of Psych Talk I chat with Kristine Santiago, a wellness coach, personal trainer, and clinical mental health graduate student. We discuss the very important topic of domestic violence. Kristine starts the episode by discussing why she is so passionate about domestic violence and her personal experience of losing her friend to domestic violence. Kristine defines what domestic violence is and what is may look like in various situations. We discussed various ways domestic violence may impact or traumatize the victim, as well as the many reasons individuals may not leave a domestic violence situation. Given her lived experience, Kristine discusses how people can support a loved one who is in a domestic violence situation and offers words of encouragement and advice to both individuals who are the victims of domestic violence and their loved ones trying to help them.
