Episode quotes:
“Then by the end of high school, I really wanted to come to uni in the UK and I started drawing continuously which was a big mistake. It overloaded my wrist a lot and I remember one of the mornings when I just woke up I couldn't move it. It was such a pain, like if I had needles in my wrist and hand.”
“As a production assistant, I really like that I'm very close to the artists and enjoy talking to them. When I was a PA in the department, I would sometimes just call them and talk for 20 minutes. I think working from home, it becomes depressive on both sides because you're very much alone. So I just enjoyed talking to them and seeing how everyone is doing.”
“It was just remembering that I came to the UK thinking, okay, big job, a lot of depth. I needed to know it was worth it. And just thinking that I really put a lot of effort into getting all the skills, the amount of work and so many sleepless nights to learn the skills I'm doing now. So I had to continue. It just felt like there is no way I'm going to just stop here.”

Insight #25 - Jad Deeb: Introduction to Virtual Production by Experienced Technical Artist
Produced By with Tommen
10/06/23 • 7 min
Jad Deeb is a real-time technical artist and programmer with a strong knowledge of Unreal Engine and Houdini, currently working as a senior technical artist at London based game studio Omeda Studios. Born in Lebanon, Jad moved to the UK a few years ago looking for a better life and opportunities after his native country began experiencing a crisis. It allowed him to pursue his passion for gaming and he enrolled in a foundation course in graphic design followed by a bachelor's in 3D games and animation. Jad took an active role in honing his artistic skills outside of the classroom and started working as a freelancer, which enabled him to establish a strong body of work and open doors to the industry before graduating. Starting in virtual production, Jad begins by introducing us to this industry, sharing specifics on what it's like to work there and discussing some of the projects he worked on. He later relocated to the gaming industry, where he is currently employed, developing games and supporting other artists. Predecessor:
Episode quotes:
“It taught me a lot of things personally and professionally to take care of in the real world aside from my technical skills on the computer. And that was definitely very eye-opening and taught me a lot that I still carry over until today.“
“It’s important to be able to take a lot of random information. You don't specifically need to understand it 100% but you need to be able to get that idea in your mind straight ahead and apply it in one way or another.”
“It was mostly about me trying to sell myself as a very experienced person that can go on. And I think a very important mentality to have is that you're not asking for a recruiter to take you. But you're offering your services to someone and they want you.“
“Compare your work to the work of the professionals in the industry. That's what they are looking for. Unless they're specifically looking for interns if your work doesn't look on par with what the current talent is offering.”

Episode quotes:
“This is probably the hardest thing, which is easier saying it than doing it, is believing in yourself and listening to your own voice before others. A lot of the time we know the answers to our own questions. What do I need to do in my life? I feel stuck. Write these thoughts down.”
“The only person that knew that I was dropping out was my mom at the time. So none of my friends knew. So I didn't show up in September and I had a lot of messages and people were like where are you? Is everything okay? And I just said, I'm not joining you guys. Good luck.”
“You need to have this balance. Let's try our best to get this for the director. But you've also got to understand we're not saving lives. So I've had to understand this over the years. I've got to come to understand that actually we do make mistakes and it's okay.”

Quotes:
“Try to take it seriously, do a project that you are proud of and not just try to focus on grades.”
“You are honest with yourself, don't have anyone behind pushing you to finish work or anything, and then you're going to find out if you really like to do it or not.“
“I'm glad you asked me because sometimes it's hard to remember why you started doing this. You just go day by day and it's a very creative job but it's still a job so you kind of lose track of why you started doing this.”
“I think it's important to stay creative, especially if you have studied fine arts you're probably a creative person and you really like to do stuff.”
“Do something creative and even if you are working on something that doesn't have a lot of creativity, just try to find time to do creative stuff. At least for me, it's what really makes the difference and what I'm looking forward to because you have complete freedom of doing whatever you want and it feels great.”
