Getting Blog Readers to Subscribe, Follow and Connect

Welcome to episode 115. Today we are continuing our series on warming up your readers.

This series began in episode 112 where I presented 4 stages of warming your readers up. Taking them from being completely unaware of you and your blog to taking them to becoming highly engaged readers.

In episode 113, I talk about getting the first eyeball on your blog. Getting the visitor to your blog for the first time, and I talk about some practical techniques to do that.

In episode 114, I talk about how to get people to take a second look and become interested in your blog. I gave some techniques for getting readers to pause and take that second look.

Today I am talking about building a connection with your readers. Even when you get that first eyeball or a second look, chances are, they will leave your site and never return. Today I am giving some practical tips on how to get them to subscribe or give you permission to connect with them again.

In Today’s Episode: How to Get More Subscribers, Follows and Connections From Your Blog Readers

  • Think carefully about where you want them to connect with you
  • For me, the best place to connect with blog readers is email
  • Social media is important too, but it is secondary and there is more risk
  • Have prominent calls to action on your blog to get the reader’s email
  • Have at least a subscribe form in the sidebar or in the navigation somewhere
  • Find other ways to get the reader’s email (some of these may be controversial)
  • Use popups or welcome mats
  • Lead Magnets, content upgrades, or op-tins
  • Cutting edge bloggers are moving away from having one lead magnet or op-tin and are creating multiple op-tins depending on the content the reader is browsing
  • Get an ongoing opt-in like our 6 months of blog post ideas
  • Create inspirational posts, like image posts – these seem to get more subscribers – add stronger calls to action if they are getting higher subscriber numbers
  • Create a series like this we are doing now – daily, weekly, even yearly to keep readers wanting to subscribe for the future content series
  • Promote your secondary connection points – Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc. Where ever you and your readers are most active.
  • Secondary connection points can be promoted in your emails, put links in welcome email
  • Promote secondary points in blog navigation, sidebar or blog posts
  • Promote from other social networks, use a tool like SumoMe or Hellobar, cross promote
  • Opportunity to get the connection even when someone has left your blog – retargeting – Facebook Advertising using a facebook pixel on your blog which enables you to retarget with an ad that goes back to your blog

My name is Darren Rowse and today, I want to continue our question and answer on the topic of content creation that I started a couple of episodes ago in episode 41. I got so many questions on the creation of content, I couldn’t possibly fit them into a single episode. If you want to go back and listen to that when I do tackle about seven different questions there. Today, I’ve got another five for you that all center around content creation.

You can find today’s show notes at problogger.com/podcast/43 where I’ll include some further reading and you can also let us know what you think about today’s episode. I’d also love to get your feedback on the podcast in general with a review on iTunes, Stitcher, or whatever other medium that you are listening to this on. Those reviews certainly help us to shape this show but also help us to find new listeners which I do appreciate. Let’s get into today’s questions.

The first question I want to tackle today is a fun one, it’s from Samantha who asks, “Tell us about three of your best posts ever and why they worked.” This is actually something I’ve done before on ProBlogger and I’ll give you a link in the show notes to a post I wrote almost on the identical topic.

In it, I actually talked about five different posts that I wrote in the first year of Digital Photography School, that led to a combination of over six million visitors to those five posts. I’m going to actually three different posts today because I don’t want to replicate that. You can go and check out that post. That does give a whole heap of information, but I want to just talk about three and these all do come from Digital Photography School which is my main blog.

The first one is probably a post that I almost didn’t publish at all. I thought it was too basic to really be published. It’s on the topic of How to Hold a Di...

Further Reading and Resources for Launching a New Product Successfully

Full Transcript Expand to view full transcript Compress to smaller transcript view Hi there and welcome to the ProBlogger Podcast episode 42. My name is Darren Rowse. Today, I want to talk to you about our latest product launch on Digital Photography School. It was a new product for us. I want to talk a little bit about how we came up with the idea, how we marketed it, how we developed the product, how we launched it, and also how it actually went. You can find today’s show notes where I will link to the product and give you some further reading at problogger.com/podcast/42.

Today, I want to talk about a product that we launched four weeks ago on Digital Photography School, which is my main blog. This particular product was a new one for us. It’s actually a Lightroom presets pack. For those of you who aren’t familiar with presets, Lightroom is a post-production tool for photographers to manipulate their images and to get their images looking great. They have the ability to use presets within that, which—the way I describe it to people—is like on Instagram where you manipulate a photo with a click. You just say, “Here’s a filter that I want to put onto this particular photo.”

In some ways, it’s similar. A preset enables you to say, “I want to treat this photo in this particular way.” It takes a whole process of manipulations to an image and puts them into a single click. You take the whole heap of things that have adjustments and then you can click a link or a button and it will change your photo. This is a tool that’s been built into Lightroom. You can actually develop your own presets, but you also can download other people’s and install them into Lightroom.

We developed this presets pack as 101 presets that enable you to change photos in 101 different ways. We developed them and bundled them together into different areas. There’s presets for landscape photos, there’s presets for portraits and different types of presets. The idea for this pack came really out of some affiliate promotions that we had previously done. This is actually something I would really encourage you to think about no matter what kind of product you are thinking about developing for your blog.

One of the best things that you can do before you develop a product is to test it by promoting someone else’s product. This might sound a little strange but you will learn so much by doing an affiliate promotion of someone else. This is something I’ve done time and time again. Before I developed my first ebook, I promoted someone else’s ebook. Before I developed my first course, I promoted someone else’s course.

There’s a number of things you’re going to learn by promoting someone else...

How the Story of the Cavanagh Brothers Can Help You Find Blogging Success

In today’s episode, I share the inspiring story of the Cavanagh Brothers. It’s a tale of finding success and glory through stamina and dedication over a long period of time, something that holds true for finding blogging success. It reveals the second most important thing you’ll ever do as an entrepreneur.

In This Episode

You can listen to today’s episode above or in iTunes or Stitcher (where we’d also LOVE to get your reviews on those platforms if you have a moment). In today’s episode:

  • The story of the Cavanagh Brothers
  • How the story can help you find blogging success
  • The second most important thing you’ll ever do as an entrepreneur

The Story of the Cavanagh Brothers

The year was 1851 and two brothers stood by a bend in a creek that had wishfully been named by gold prospectors ‘Golden Point’ in days gone by.

The two brothers’ surname was Cavanagh and they’d been digging, along with around 600 other miners, in their ‘claim’ at Golden Point for days.

Some gold had definitely been found on this particular bend in the creek. In fact numerous miners had made good, although not spectacular, money from their finds in previous weeks.

Most of the gold had been found in the sandy ground to a depth of around 1 meter (3.2 feet) but at that point everyone who dug hit a hard layer of clay and received no reward for their effort. Digging through the sandy ground wasn’t hard but as soon as they hit clay it became back breaking work.

The result was that the area was littered with abandoned claims. Holes in the ground were everywhere, all dug to a depth of around 1 meter.

Miners around the Cavanagh brothers that day were beginning to talk of rumors coming from further up creek of richer pickings and in the 24 hours that followed most of the men had moved on.

But the brothers Cavanagh had a hunch.

They wanted to see what would happen if they dug deeper and so began the arduous task of digging into the hard clay that everyone else had stopped digging into.

They chose an abandoned claim from another miner and began to dig.

The work was hard and unrewarding.

They dug and found nothing but more clay.

Inch by inch they chipped away at the clay only to find more clay.

All day they dug.

The second morning they continued to dig as the last miners around them abandoned their claims and moved on to chase their dreams up creek.

I can just imagine the other miners abandoning their claims shaking their heads as they looked at the Cavanagh brothers and laughing at their foolhardy efforts.

But the brothers had a belief and kept their focus.

As sunset approached on the 2nd day, and after hours of back breaking work the brothers finally broke through the last of the clay at around the depth of 2 meters.

Under the clay they found what centuries ago been the old bed of the creek and in it were pockets of gold which had been washed down the creek from the mountains over hundreds of years.

The brothers worked into the night feverishly until the light from their lamps gave up. Imagine how they must have felt as they attempted to sleep that night!

The next day they rose early and assessed their work. In the light of day the full reality of what they’d uncovered started to sink in. There was gold down below that clay, and lots of it!

In a single day alone the Cavanagh brothers found 27 kilograms (60 pounds) of gold.

That day’s takings alone earned the men over £3,500 which was more than enough to set the two brothers up for life.

Word quickly spread of the brothers’ success.

One month later, 10,000 miners worked in the area around Golden Point and the wider Ballarat area and it became known as the richest known gold field in the world for that time.

You can bet that those who followed the brothers dug deeper than they had previously!

Reflections on the Cavanagh Brothers Experience

I first came across the story of the Cavanagh brothers while researching a project I was doing in high school and have since found myself reflecting upon it many times.

I love the determination, the focus and the persistence of these two men.

I love how t...

How Blogging Led to a Million Dollar Business for Jeff Goins

Jeff Goins shares how his blogging business has evolved over the years. What he’s doing now is very different than when he started.

Blog 1: Jeff started blogging as an outlet to catalogue his journey across North America while on tour with a band.

“That was my first blog and my first experience with sharing my life and my ideas with the world. Just the thrill of pressing, Publish.”

Wake-up Call: While living the dream of playing music for thousands of screaming fans, Jeff’s favorite part was writing blog posts.

Blog 2: Jeff moved to Nashville and trained missionaries to blog for a nonprofit. Eventually, Jeff became the Marketing Director and learned about online marketing.

Wake-up Call: Jeff wanted to get back to his own blogging. “I had been helping other people share their stories. I had something to say and wanted to share it with the world.”

Blogs 3 to Present: Jeff wanted to make a living as a writer, but didn’t know how.

Wake-up Call: Jeff’s failed blogs had one thing in common: He quit them. Time to get serious and stick to it:

  • Write every day
  • Get more subscribers
  • Build email lists
  • Learn from other bloggers
  • Offer to write and accept guest posts

Now, Jeff is a full-time blogger, author, speaker, and online entrepreneur.

Darren: Hey there, friends. It’s Darren Rowse from ProBlogger. Welcome to Episode 278 of the ProBlogger Podcast. The podcast is designed to help you start a blog, to build that blog, and to monetize it.

Today, I’ve got a special treat for you. It is a keynote that I gave a couple of years ago at our ProBlogger event in Melbourne. It’s titled Evolve Don’t Revolve. It’s all about how as bloggers and online entrepreneurs, it’s really easy to revolve in our blogging, to just go around in circles. I don’t know if you can relate to that of feeling going around in circles. I certainly can. There’s been so many times over my 15 years of blogging where I’ve realized I’m just treading water, I stopped growing, I stopped evolving. The call of this keynote is to look at seven different areas where you can evolve your blog and online business.

Also, a taster of what we do at our Evolve event, at our ProBlogger event, which we’ve been running it for quite a few years. We’ve got our new event coming up in August of this year on the 10th and 11th of August, again, in Melbourne. I want to tell you a little bit about that event before we get into the keynote. There’s two options for those of you who want to come to our event in Melbourne. On the 10th of August, we’ve got a training day. This is a one day event for beginners, intermediate level bloggers. It’s also probably relevant for other content creators as well.

If you head to problogger.com/events you can actually see a rundown of what we’re doing at that particular event. Largely though, it’s me. You’ll get a full day of me teaching on the four key areas of building a successful blog. I’m going to talk for about an hour about content and crafting great content for your blog. I’ll talk about evolving your engagement with your readers, how to build community on your blog, ho...

How One Blogger is Making the Most from Networking and Interviewing

Our series of stories from new bloggers continues with Penny Wilson, who started Lingo Mama to blog about language learning and travel.

Penny’s reasons for starting a blog:

  • Return to her passion for language learning
  • Establish accountability and discipline with language learning
  • Share love for language learning with others
  • Inspire others to learn a second language

Starting a blog involved a huge learning curve for Penny, especially when it came to the technical aspects of managing it.

Fortunately, Penny hasn’t struggled for content ideas. The challenge is getting those ideas across in a way that’s interesting, entertaining and informative, and that adds value.

One of the highlights of blogging came when Penny connected with bloggers she respects in her niche. She also created an interview series that lets her connect with other language learners.

Making money from her blog has been slow, but Penny has been happy with affiliate ads she installed early on to generate traffic and referrals.

Penny’s Top Tips:

  • Don’t stress too much about being perfect
  • Promote content that’s most useful to readers
  • Listen to feedback from readers

Did Penny’s story inspire you to start a blog? Then, sign up for the free Start a Blog course as a way to celebrate our International Start a Blog Day on Feb. 7.

Now, today, we’re continuing our series on blogger breakthroughs, where we’ve got listeners of the podcast pitching their stories to us to share with you. We’ve chosen a few of them from many that were submitted in to share with you.

We tried to choose a variety of bloggers from different parts of the world with different accents, with different niches and different experiences of blogging. Today, we’ve got Mim Jenkinson who has a blog called Love from Mim at lovefrommim.com. Now, Mim started out blogging for one reason and ended up blogging for another. I’ll let her share that transition of her blog. She’s got a story that I’m sure many of you will relate to but also find quite inspiring as well. Creating great content, finding an audience, building engagement, monetizing your blog. This is ProBlogger.

Mim: I’m Mim Jenkinson and my blog is Love from Mim. You can find ir at lovefrommim.com. I started blogging in 2013 in June and my blog is about how I stay organized as a busy mom of two small kids and how I work from home. I’d like to share my tips on how I try to stay organized and how I juggle my family time, work time and time for myself as well. Before my breakthrough, my blog was just a hobby blog so I would share everything about my life as a mom, a little bit about the kids and the things that we use to love the products and services, the things we got up to, and I made a small income occasionally from selling a few sponsored posts, but very small.

In November 2015, I was actually diagnosed with breast cancer and I just started quite a well-paid job in consulting so I had to leave that because the particular chemo and radiation regime that I started was quite a tough one and there was just no possible way I could continue to work. What I did was use my blog as an outlet so I shared the journey of my breast cancer diagnosis from the day after I was diagnosed and then I started to treat it like t...

How One Blogger Created a Directory that Attracts Readers

We continue our Blogging Breakthroughs series with Carolyn Edlund, whose Artsy Shark blog focuses on the business of art.

Carolyn shares the story of how she created a directory to attract readers to her blog instead of having to chase after them. It revolutionized her blog, and helped her build a successful business around it.

Carolyn understands the importance of building strong business relationships and creating win-win situations through collaboration.

Her directory identifies places artists can sell their art online. It also provides solid business information and helps artists gain exposure.

To attract readers for your blog, ask yourself:

  • What do your readers want?
  • What problem can you solve for your readers?
  • What issue can you help your readers overcome?

Based on tips from Carolyn, what kind of magnet do you plan on creating to draw readers to your blog?

Her blog is about the business of art, and she’s going to tell us a story today that I think will be interesting to many of you. It’s a way of drawing readers into your blog that’s going to stop you from having to chase your readers, but hopefully attract them to your blog, and this has revolutionized her blog and has helped her to build a really successful business around the blog that she has.

You can find show notes today at problogger.com/podcast/262, where you’ll find links to Carolyn’s blog, and also the directory that she’s about to talk about as well, and a book that she mentions, too. At the end of her story, I’ll come back and pull out a few of the golden nuggets that I heard her share, okay? Now, over to Carolyn.

Carolyn: My name is Carolyn Edlund, and I’m the founder of Artsy Shark, which is the blog about the business of art. Before I ever became a blogger, I was a self-employed artist for more than twenty years, with a successful production studio, and subsequently, I was a sales representative for an art publishing company. I had a lot of experience marketing and selling art, and I also led a business networking group where I learned a lot about the importance of building strong business relationships and creating win-win situations where both parties can benefit by collaborating with each other.

I got into blogging sheerly by accident back in 2009, after I took a free course held at a local community college. At that time, I had no idea what I was doing, and I wasn’t quite sure what would happen. I got started by writing some business articles for my blog, based on my experience on marketing and selling. And then, I stumbled on a book called Inbound Marketing, that was written by HubSpot founders Brian Halligan and Dharmesh Shah. That book explained how online businesses could attract readers, and attract customers by offering really useful content that would act as a magnet for website traffic.

I also found ProBlogger at that time, where I could se...

How Starting a Blog Helped Transform the Life of a Blogger

Happy New Year!

This first episode of 2019 launches a series of stories from new bloggers who started their blogs after completing our free Start a Blog course.

The course features seven steps, which makes it a perfect way to celebrate International Start a Blog Day on February 7.

The first story comes from Denise Bumby, who took our course last year and launched her Does Size Matter? blog about six months ago.

Denise was searching for a way to cope with changes in her life. And she found her way through blogging, which brings her joy and hope.

She may not have many subscribers yet, but that number is growing daily. And so is Denise.

Denise’s tips on how to boost your blog:

  • Consistently produce content
  • Use social media
  • Post content in various formats (videos, etc.)
  • Get mentioned on other blogs
  • Learn and implement affiliate marketing and sponsorship
  • Keep working. Don’t give up or get discouraged

Despite what you may think, anyone can start a blog – young or old, tech savvy or not. Blogging is for everyone.

So, are you ready to start a blog?

Darren: Hey there and welcome to the first episode of the ProBlogger podcast for 2019. This is episode 270. You can find today’s show notes at problogger.com/podcast/270. ProBlogger is a site for bloggers and prebloggers, who today’s episode is particularly for. It’s all designed to help you to build and grow a blog that not only makes your reader’s life better in some way but also helps you to achieve your goals and bring you a little joy to your life as well. We’re going to hear a story today where that happens.

Today, we are launching another round of our bloggers’ stories. It’s a series that’s going to go for the next couple of weeks. They’re shorts stories from brand new bloggers. This series is all about starting a blog and hearing the stories of bloggers who started their blog over the last 12 months.

They all started their blogs as a result of doing our Start A Blog course, which we are currently really pushing hard because on the 7th of February, we’re running our International Start A Blog Day for the second year in a row. Last year, we ran International Start A Blog Day and hundreds of bloggers started a blog on that particular day.

As you’ll hear today, hundreds more started their blogs in the months afterwards. Some people needed a little bit more time. We want you to be a part of this year’s Start A Blog Day. Whether you are a blogger who’s about to start and you’ve been thinking about starting a blog or whether you know someone who should start a blog, we want you to encourage them to get involved. If you want to be a part of it or if you know someone who really does need to start a blog, our course is 100% free and it will help you to start that blog. You can find it at problogger.com/startablog.

Before I introduce you to today’s story, I want to pause for a moment and say Happy New Year. I know it’s three weeks into the new year and I should apologize for the delay in getting this episode out but I do want to start off by saying Happy New Year. The reason for the delay this year is that it’s been a bit of a tough year so far. In fact, last year was a little bit tough as well. Many of you I know have been following my Facebook profile and my personal profile where I shared recently a couple of posts about my own battles with depression over the last year and also the recent loss of a friend.

I wanted to mention those things here because I’m really aware that sometimes in the online space, we only talk about the good stuff, the highlights. I’m not sure how helpful that is for you as a listener to only hear the ups, the successes, the highlights, to see the good things that is going on. The reality is that sometimes life gets tough and there are good times to step back, to change things up, to take a break, to rest, and to heal.

That’s what...
