Preacher Boys Podcast - Tortured by the Christian School
play

01/06/20 • 87 min

Paul's journey with the IFB began at five years old. From that point until he broke away nearly twenty years later, he experienced torture – disguised as "discipline." From his early days within the Christian school, receiving daily swats with a large 2x4 to being sent to an even more abusive "boys home" because he snuck out to watch Ice Age as a teenager – this harrowing story depicts a sad reality of abuse within an environment that should be safe for any child. Please listen to this powerful testimony of deep struggle and his inspiring journey to overcome. Steven Thiel was recruited into an IFB youth group when he was almost 15, and was groomed to be a “preacher boy," preaching every chance he got in homeless shelters, detention centers and services. He surrendered to the “call” on his life and committed to full-time ministry. He attended West Coast Baptist College and then served 8.5 years in two different IFB churches. On this episode, Eric Skwarczynski sits down with Sarah Edmondson and Anthony "Nippy" Ames to talk about their time inside NXIVM.

Pick up a copy of Sarah's book here: https://amzn.to/3f9hF6w

_______________________________________________________

ABOUT SARAH:

Sarah Edmondson is a Canadian actress who has starred in the CBS series Salvation and more than twelve films for the Hallmark Channel and Lifetime. She is also a well-established voice-over artist for popular series such as Transformers: Cybertron and My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic. In 2005, when NXIVM, a personal and professional development company, promised to provide the tools and insight Sarah needed to reach her potential, she was intrigued. Over her twelve-year tenure, she went from student to coach and eventually operated her own NXIVM center in Vancouver. Questions kept coming up about the organization’s rules and practices, which came to a head in 2017 when she accepted an invitation from her best friend to join DOS, a “secret sisterhood” within NXIVM.

In 2019, Sarah published Scarred: The True Story of How I Escaped NXIVM, the Cult that Bound My Life, with Kristine Gasbarre. In this tell-all memoir, she shares her story from the moment she takes her first seminar to her harrowing fight to get out. Her full story as a whistleblower is featured in the CBC podcast Uncover: Escaping NXIVM (downloaded over 25 million times) and The Vow, the critically acclaimed HBO documentary series on NXIVM. Now with the launch of “A Little Bit Culty,” Sarah and her co-host/husband Anthony “Nippy” Ames are keeping the conversation going by discussing the healing process with the help of experts and fellow survivors.

ABOUT NIPPY:

As an aspiring actor and former college athlete, Anthony “Nippy” Ames was drawn to NXIVM’s goals program. In his 12 years with the organization, he rose steadily up the ranks as a teacher, built centers in New York and Vancouver, and even met his now-wife, “A Little Bit Culty” co-host, Sarah Edmondson, there. But when he learned that the company was, in fact, a dangerous cult, he wasted no time in doing exactly what needed to be done: helping burn its carefully constructed public image to the ground.

With NXIVM’s notorious founder now behind bars facing a brisk 120-year sentence, Nippy isn’t planning on going quiet anytime soon. As Executive Producer of the “A Little Bit Culty” podcast, Nippy has come full circle back to what he was born to do: performing, creating, and truth-telling. He’s proving to be an emerging voice in the conversation around what it means to be an upstanding man, husband, and father in 2021.

Preacher Boys Podcast - 246: Bob Jones University President Resigns
play

04/01/23 • 7 min

In this episode of the Preacher Boys Podcast, Eric Skwarczynski talks about the resignation of Dr. Steve Pettit, the president of Bob Jones University.

The resignation comes after Pettit wrote a five-page letter accusing Dr. John Lewis, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, of holding off-site secret meetings without informing key university leadership. Pettit also claims that Lewis has taken actions to obstruct and impede the university's Title XI investigation into a sexual harassment case.

Pettit's resignation is a shocking development, given the hope many placed in him to bring positive change to the institution after the GRACE report revealed the mishandling of abuse cases at the university in the early 2010s.

Eric reads much of Pettit's letter verbatim and discusses the implications of these allegations.

Purchase a copy of Jessica Willis Fisher's memoir here: https://amzn.to/3qVyhXU

Growing up the eldest daughter in a large, highly controlled, fundamentalist Christian household, Jessica Willis was groomed to perform and conform to her father's disturbing and chaotic teachings. Cut off from anything unapproved by her father, Jessica was persistently curious about the outside world, always wondering what was normal or potentially dangerous about her upbringing.

When the Willis family rocketed into fame after their appearances on multiple televised talent competitions in 2014, Jessica and her family landed their own reality TV show and toured across the globe, singing and dancing for millions. The world loved this beautiful family of kids; young and vivacious, the Willis's presented themselves to be extraordinary and happy. But the older and wiser Jessica got, the more she had to face that what was going on behind closed doors would forever be escalating.
