Practical Bizz Podcast - Business Resource: Unlocking the Potential of Black Business
play

04/17/23 • 23 min

According to the 2022 Census Bureau, there are currently 140,918 black or African-American-owned businesses, with 141. Billion annual receipts and 1.3 million employees with 42.2 billion dollars in payroll each year. We agree that these stats are impressive and continue to grow each year. However, you will find as you dig deeper into black business communities, they are still faced with many challenges. In an interesting article published in Forbes magazine this past February, they share some of the most frequent challenges black business owners face throughout the country. These challenges include facing systemic racism, issues locating and securing funding, and lack of support resources within their communities.
Even while faced with challenges, a great deal of hope and support is available. Black Business owners are very passionate business professionals who give back to their communities and seek to work alongside the side business owners and professionals who understand their unique strengths and challenges when starting and growing a business. In this week's episode of Practical Bizz, we are on location at the Providence, Rhode Island offices of the Rhode Island Black Business Association. We speak with Founder and President, Lisa Ranglin about how her association helps build black business through business development, workforce development, and advocacy to make better futures for black communities.

Spring has arrived here in Rhode Island, meaning more time outside for you and your family, and let's not forget our beloved family pets. We love the nice weather, but unfortunately, so do many critters and creepy crawlers, such as spiders, mosquitoes, fleas, and ticks. These can be minor nuisances but can later result in serious illnesses such as West Nile virus, meningitis, Lyme disease, to name a few.

It doesn't stop there! The Household Hero does more than insect protection. Gus is also a general contractor who can help with many services around your home. These services include but are not limited to moving storage boxes, soft washing the exterior of your home, conducting minor construction projects, and plumbing repairs.
Gus will be easy to spot. He arrives on location in a decked-out truck with his branded logo. His uniform is a replica of Crocodile Dundee. Gus' outgoing and unique personality made him an excellent guest to record for our show. For more information about Gus, visit his site at The Household Hero LLC (thehouseholdhero999.com)

In this conversation, Erica Saccoccio, Child Care Directors Chair Creator, Practical Bizz Podcast host, multi-location childcare owner, and current board member of riaeyc (the Rhode Island Association for the Education of Young Children), is joined by fierce children's education advocate, Coordinator of Program Quality for Bright Stars, and Adjunct Professor at the University of Rhode Island Alyson Panzarella to discuss the benefits of being an active member of riaeyc.

The candid conversation goes beyond a list of benefits, as the two share how being an active member of riaeyc has helped them grow as professionals. Beyond her duties at riaeyc, Alyson has focused her studies on advocacy law and has begun teaching at the University of Rhode Island in the past year. Erica shares how riaeyc helped play a role in moving her program up the QRS ladder as programs were among the first group of centers to become part of Bright Stars in RI.

Nothing is off the table; we discuss the importance of early childhood education, including children ages 5-12 years old. Being involved with riaeyc makes business sense from a childcare owner's perspective. The recent additions of childcare retention bonuses, free professional development opportunities, and scholarships to complete formal education programs at the college level thanks to the work done at the state level by riaeyc to help lift teachers and centers in RI to higher levels of quality. We learn about how to use feedback from teachers and other directors to build better work cultures and attract and retain top talent at a time when staffing shortages have hit our nation.

And, of course, we share membership perks such as discounts and reward programs afforded to activate paying members of riaeyc, upcoming initiatives, events, advocacy movements, and public policy. Lastly, we leave the audience information on how to get involved by enrolling or renewing a membership, business opportunities to become a sponsor, or apply to be a board member during the next election season.
