The Positively Joy podcast is taking a powerful new direction and diving into a subject that touches so many hearts: relationships. I’m Yvette Walker, creator and host. God has placed it on my heart to share my own journey through a difficult divorce and my path back to joy—a path where God became my everything. I remember the overwhelming hurt and confusion, but I also remember the freedom that came through Jesus. In this new season, we’re going to get real. We’ll talk about the deep pain, the loss, but also the healing and liberation found in Christ. After 13 years of marriage to a man with bipolar depression, I was left broken, questioning my worth. But Psalm 91 became my anchor. “He will cover you with His feathers, and under His wings, you will find refuge.” It was through faith, self-discovery, and God’s protection that I learned joy isn’t tied to life’s circumstances—it’s a choice. By leaning into His promises, I found love for myself, peace in His presence, and joy in the everyday moments I once overlooked. I invite you to join us on this journey. Share it with those who need these conversations. Positively Joy is evolving, and we’re stepping into something even greater.

Jerry Dugan of the Beyond the Rut podcast and ministry visits the show today. A military veteran, Jerry has a great message about listening to God, being obedient and loving his family. It's about time we had him on the show, and his message of finding faith certainly is relevant following the Memorial Day weekend.

Licensed Professional Counselor and Therapist Healey Ikerd says it's a natural, and that when picking a counselor who is Christian you should ask them to integrate their faith into the counseling.

This week Positively Joy is doing a Mic Swap, where I turn over the microphone to Jenna Erlandson of the Bridge of the Faithful podcast. Jenna has a great show and I wanted to share it with you. She discussed "Facing the Red Sea," and I know you'll get a lot out of it. Take it away, Jenna!

Broadcast news anchor Storme Jones saw a vehicle zooming towards him, and before he knew it his truck was rolling. But what Storme later recalled was that he was in praise and worship moments in the car before the accident. He was listening to Christian music on the radio. And he believes that made all the difference.

Dallas Jenkins has created a different kind of series about Jesus. And, Jenkins said, he’s “obsessed” with making the experience authentic and intimate for viewers. I spoke to Dallas at the National Religious Broadcasters convention in Texas. We had a great conversation but the audio was noisy, being on the conference floor. Still, his message is important and worth listening.

And, when he talked about JOY he was really speaking my language!

Key takeaways:

  • Dallas made "The Chosen" after coming off a failed movie project
  • He openly talks about sin
  • He intentionally made the series cast diverse, especially in the portrayal of women.
  • He said there is a difference between joy and happiness. "Joy is eternal."
  • He tries to keep the show Biblically accurate while creating an interesting story.

“I don’t want people to glorify the show to the point where they think this is a replacement for the Bible,” Jenkins said. “I’m saying from the beginning, that the show is not God’s word. Jonathan (Roumie), who plays Jesus is not Jesus. I’m not the creator of the universe. I’m a broken, flawed man ... who’s trying to do my best to capture the character and intentions of Jesus in the Gospels."

This is one of my favorite episodes of 2020. It didn't make the top 20 in downloads and I'd say it's underrated. I hope you enjoy listening to my conversation with Methodist Elder and historian Wendy Meyer unpacking Lin-Manuel Miranda's musical "Hamilton" and looking at the many references to God and the Bible. We look at four songs in particular: "Wait For It," "Say No to This," "One Last Time" and "Hurricane."

Podcast Q&A

Why did you start this show?

You crave real JOY, right? What are you waiting for? Do you want to embody joy? To radiate joy? It can happen! People tell me they see the joy in me every day. But I’d been walking around for years believing yet not thriving. I believed in God, but I felt numb in my faith! Is that you? I’d been walking around for years believing in God, but with a dead, dusty heart. In 2020 I started this podcast after hearing from the Lord. I've never looked back!

What do you hope listeners gain from listening to your show?

Positively Joy is a multicultural, multiethnic podcast for Christian women that takes a look at the search for joy and light in all seasons of life. Join us and become chain breakers in grief and the inability to find joy in your life. Positively Joy also comes to you via social media with the word of the day, inspirational posts and episode updates on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, LinkedIn and Pinterest. Join our Positively Joy Facebook Community for more inspiration and laughter!

Which episode should someone start with?

Try episode one of Season Four. It was a great conversation with singer songwriter Brooke Robertson who talked about her child abuse and using creativity to deal with that and walk in her joy. It's a good example of what we try to do.

Which have been your favourite episodes so far?

I loved the Clubhouse episode when Dallas Jenkins of "The Chosen" popped in unexpectedly! I also loved a few of my topical episodes on pop culture and movies.

Which episode are you most proud of?

I'm proud of them all, but I won the Spark Media Best Interview Award for episodes in Season 2.

What is your vision for your show?

My vision is to continue spreading the gospel and entertaining my listeners with compelling and encouraging stories.

What is your favourite other podcast that isn't yours?

There are so many other wonder faith-based podcasts. I love Revitalizing Kindness, which I co-host with the awesome David Weaver. In the secular world, I like Snap Judgment, the Ted Radio Hour and This American Life. I also like RadioLab.

How did you come up with the name for your podcast?

God gave it to me. No joke! I originally named the show Finding Joy -- not very original. I knew I needed to rename it and God said Positively Joy. As a journalist, I knew that wasn't grammatically correct. But being obedient, I said, Yes, Lord!

Tell us a bit about yourself

I’m an Enneagram 3w2, which means I’m extraverted, sociable, and compassionate, and I like to be appreciated (listen here for more on the Enneagram). I love writing, blogging, and writing Christian songs. My venture into podcasting came through a yearning to share God with others through the creative gifts He gave me. In search of deeper expression, I went to Christian music artist Rita Springer’s DIVE camp, and through that creative process, much was born.
