Thank you and enjoy the show!! *** Little known secret: the original concept for this podcast was inspired by our reaction to an episode of Bill Simmons' podcast, The Rewatchables, and his recent episode on Boomerang had us running to cover this classic film from the point of view of the women. (01:43) *** Complicated Woman Rating - Jacqueline. The complicated woman meter hit the top for Jacqueline! From the moment she comes on screen her impact is felt — we love her attitude, confidence, sexual agency, ambition and charm. (05:00) *** Complicated Woman Rating - Angela. In a breakout role for Halle Berry, Angela is also smart, funny, assertive, successful, and well-rounded. We see different sides to Angela, but Carinn and Kate don’t always agree on which way that cuts. (10:47) *** Who do we relate to more - Jacqueline or Angela? Kate is all NOT Angela, but is she Team Jacqueline? Carinn sure is, declaring she has never wanted to emulate everything about a character more than Jacqueline! (18:02) *** Scenes -- Carinn points out clever way the movies starts, a true set up and redirection that she compares to 500 Days of Summer (21:51); we discuss what we call the “the eyelash scene” and decide we should use the word “seduce” more and somehow Carinn makes a comparison to Marianne in Normal People (25:05); Carinn loves the way Jacqueline ribs Marcus after they first have sex and the whiplash of role reversals is amazingly fresh (28:37); for Angela, we chat about the “blue people” scene where we first see what an asshole Marcus can be (33:51); the “love should have brought your ass home” scene is a well-deserved classic (35:04); Kate and Carinn get heated over Marcus’ big speech to Angela - Kate calls it an epic fail and Carinn declares it her absolute favorite rom-com speech ever (40:15); Carinn makes one final comparison, bringing us back to Cruel Intentions. (56:45) *** What’s your damage, Heather? Since this is Marcus’ story, Carinn & Kate agree that there is not a whole lot of damage to discuss for Jacqueline or Angela, but we’re ok with taking a break from the couch. (59:20) *** Supporting Characters - Strange and Lady Eloise. We’re bringing back the supporting characters segment because these two characters give us the most complicated females in a supporting role AND provide a unique opportunity to discuss sex in the workplace and gender reversals. Is Lady Eloise a version of Harvey Weinstein? (61:00); Strange is so bold and over the top— rubbing her underwear in people’s face and screaming the word for kitty cat all over a restaurant— she’s out of control and it’s amazing to watch! (71:50) *** Who Won The Movie? A new segment, inspired by The Rewatchables. (77:42) *** Crystal Ball. While the recent BET reboot of Boomerang takes place 25 years later and centers on Marcus and Angela's daughter, Simone, and Bryson (son of Jacqueline), that doesn’t stop us from sharing our own visions and they are all about Jacqueline! (88:05) *** Takeaways. Kate brings it back to The Rewatchables and how they noted that this movie reflected how something so good can come from Black writers writing about their own experiences, which is the same point we frequently make about the need for female creators. Carinn’s takeaway celebrates the point of view of this podcast and the simple and subversive act of taking women seriously. (98:33).
