This week we talk with May Vutrapongvatana, Esq. (Twitter: @MayVutraETC, IG: @mayvutrapongvatana). May passed the bar exam and used to be a lawyer (hence the Esq.), but now she's an organizer for VOCAL NY (@VOCALNewYork)! VOCAL-NY is a statewide grassroots membership organization that builds power among low-income people directly impacted by HIV/AIDS, the drug war, mass incarceration, and homelessness. We start the episode off with our spicy new segment Hot Take Hot Pot, talk about reasons why Asian-led progressive movements might lose their edge over time, and what VOCAL NY does and how May got involved with them. If you're reading this, please check out @thaistogether, a group of Thai American artists recommended by May, AND give us our 25th review on Apple Podcasts!

The 2020 Census data is out, baby! This week we talked with Julie Kim (@julieaekim), who was the Queens Borough Lead for the NYC Census 2020 and is also the cofounder of the Asian American Feminist Collective (@aafcollective)! We break down how the Census is not just a fun tally of the US population, but a tool that determines how much money is allocated to different states. cities, and counties every decade. Fun (potentially depressing) fact: due to the pandemic, this was the first time the Census went digital. Julie also talks about how she got started with organizing and teaches us the term grass-top organizing! Tune in to hear how we’re going to celebrate white people no longer being the plurality in Queens!

This week we’re talking with Esther Tseng (@estarla, LA Times, Eater, Bon Appétit, Time Out) , a food journalist who writes about food and culture and food justice. We talk with Esther about food access and income inequality, outrage against white chefs inventing “superior” Asian food (e.g. Lucky Lee’s, Congee Karen), and how to move from outrage to action when seeing these pieces designed to make us mad. Give us a listen to hear what we think the next food to be Columbused is and leave a review!

Everyone’s eating out again in NYC, so we brought on our culinary friend and very first Asian guest, Sean Liu (@msg.kitchen) to talk about the restaurant industry! Having grown up in a kitchen, Sean talks about his culinary experience working in his parents' Chinese restaurant, the concept of “authentic” ethnic food, and trends in New American cuisine. Plus, he talks about what he’d do differently in his future restaurant to make sure his workers are paid fairly!

A new ride-sharing app just dropped and we are HYPE. Co-op Ride is an app made for drivers and owned by drivers. Many of New York City's taxi drivers are Asian immigrants, so of course we had to talk about this. In this episode, we talk about the history of NYC taxi drivers, how Uber and Lyft disrupted them, and how the Drivers Cooperative is here to disrupt Uber and Lyft. If you love the episode, please leave us and your local rideshare driver a 5-starred review.

In this episode, we break down the executive branch of municipal government before taking a deep dive into our (formerly?) first-pick candidate. Let us know who you’re planning on voting for and why!

This week in Asian American politics:

  • Biden announced he is running for re-election despite an NBCNews study that says 7 in 10 Americans don’t want him to do that. Biden cites the Big Bad Orange as good enough reason to run again as the oldest president America has ever had, begging the question, when will the evil be defeated?
  • We discuss an article from a conservative publication about Asian American landlords and how weirdly a bunch of people our age want to be landlords? The article cries rivers about who will stick up for the little guy small business landlords, as if we all don’t know that it’s giant corporation landlords that these regulations are about
  • Asia is hit with a “monster” heatwave—we’re talking about climate impacts across India, Pakistan, China, and the Philippines. While the US is running in circles about debating whether climate change is real, the climate catastrophe is already impacting parts of Asia that don’t have the infrastructure to protect the people.
    • And lastly, we cover a report that points out streaming has better AAPI representation than traditional broadcast cable television. Gerrie has to use their college degree for once and explain to Aaron what broadcast television is. Netflix pumps $2.5billion into South Korea content, and more.
