Growing up in an Entrepreneurial Family: Julie and her sisters tell their story
Today's show is an extra special edition of #PoisedforExit! I invited my sisters, Connie and Wendy to talk about being raised in an entrepreneurial home and how it impacted our lives as entrepreneurs.
The lessons shared were many, but one that stood out for all three of us was how self motivation and belief played essential roles in the success of the business each parent ran. Knowing you can do it and having the drive to make it happen are the bedrocks for any entrepreneurial success story. Another lesson learned was tenacity. Having a 'never give up' attitude, even when things get tough were instilled into each of us. How different things would have been for us as working adults, had our parents not ventured into the world of business ownership. Like their parents before them (on both sides) they knew they could do better and be happier working for themselves, and that proved to be very true.
I'm keeping the show notes short so you can take time to enjoy the episode.
If you are business owner and have children, our insights might provide some comfort and validation if you're trying to raise independent thinkers.

120 - Passing the Leadership Torch, but Still Driving the Vision
Passing the Leadership Torch, but Still Driving the Vision
Business owners don't always want to completely sunset their time in the business they grew from nothing. If that's you, then listen to this episode.
This week on #PoisedforExit Mary Nutting, CEO of CorTalent shared with us her strategy for developing leaders in her own company, as she reduces her time in the business day to day. Her goal is to spend the majority of her time focusing on big picture vision and growth strategy, and she's accomplishing that goal remarkably well. As she says "we have to put our money where our mouth is and do what we tell our clients to do". A motto she takes very seriously and so do her employees.
In their work as professional recruiters they've also realized that development of future leaders is essential in perpetuating a company's long range goals. Replacing people is expensive and disrupts the rhythm of the company's scalability, so as Mary says" let's groom them early and consistently". The advice she gives clients is the same advice she takes herself, making the work they do at CorTalent full of integrity and empathy for their clients.
So much more to take in from this interview: listen here now.

When is Enough Really Enough? 5 Strategies to Create a Transition Plan
Our guest today on #PoisedforExit featured Sharon Olson, Founder and President of Olson Wealth Group. Sharon got her start as an entrepreneur at the ripe old age of 9 years old, when she started a paper route. As a child on a farm in a small town, her opportunities growing up were few, so she ran her paper route all through college. As she says "I never wanted to be poor again, so I worked hard, saved money and dreamed big dreams". In college she heard about financial planning as a profession and it interested her so much that she moved herself into the profession.
Sharon's experience mirrors mine and many other advisers who are still finding that owner's lack of readiness and gaps in business value are still big obstacles to successful exits. The more time you allow yourself and the more you work on the business, the better your outcome.
Sharon shared some very interesting stories about a few of her clients and their family business transitions. She also discussed several ways to transition to the children that you will likely find intriguing and helpful. Listen to the episode and hear more of Sharon's advice and expertise
