From her episode notes -

"This podcast isn’t about dating. Whenever I tell people I have a podcast for single women, they immediately think it’s about dating. I mean ... what else would single women have going on in their lives, according to others.

I wanted this podcast to be different. I set out to interview amazing women who are living their lives without waiting for a partner to complete them. We’ve heard from women who travel solo, start their own businesses, commit to their mind, body and spirit and share their passions with others.

We’ve also talked about challenges and issues we’ve faced, like dealing with emotions from past or current relationships and how we can balance the masculine and feminine sides or ourselves. And recently, I’ve expanded to add an Aunt-ecdotes series, where we talk about the joys of being an aunt and share ideas on how to become the favorite aunt.

The episode today is not about dating ... or is it?

This podcast episode really wasn’t about dating. It was about the human emotions we experience when we take risks and how we can share these emotions to seek the support we need – whether it is through our joy or pain."

Welcome to Health Hats, the Podcast, learning on the journey towards best health. We will learn what it takes to adjust to life's realities in the awesome circus of health care. Follow Health Hats, the Podcast on your favorite player. I am Danny van Leeuwen, a patient-caregiver activist, a patient with Multiple Sclerosis, care partner to my grandmother, mother, and son’s end-of-life journeys, a registered nurse, a person with health technology experience, and a leader in healthcare administration. I wear many hats. My guests and I muse about making health choices and decisions, communicating health information, sharing what works, and supporting each other. This brief PodBuffet episode offers two clips from Keith Scott entitled Peer Support: Patience and Kindness and one from Melissa Reynolds entitled Accessible Yoga: Honor Your Body

We don't give advice. We don't tell people that they should or need to do anything. We try to help the person understand that they possess this innate wisdom about themselves and what do they need to tap into that? “I don't know the answer to your question, but I believe that you know the answer to your question. I'm here to provide you with any information you need, support to access resources in the community.” or just to be patient and listen. And through that process, when the other person starts to understand that I'm not going to force them to do anything. I'm not going to coerce them to do anything. I'm not going to convince them that they need to do anything. The magic of peer support if you will, starts to happen. And what's key to this process is patience and kindness in all of the interactions. It really boils down to being patient, and to being kind.

It's always seemed clear to me that for the system to change in a direction that's going to be beneficial to the people that it serves, the folks that it serves have to be involved in the decision-making process. They must be involved in planning. They must be involved in every conversation about their treatment. If the fundamental idea is recovery as a personal responsibility, for anyone to hold someone accountable, you also must allow them all the liberties and privileges and rights of everybody else.

With chronic pain and fatigue, there's such a variation. Some people are always at high levels of pain. Some people vary. There are various stages within fibromyalgia and chronic pain and chronic fatigue. Plus, you have other things going on. Some people also have arthritis where their chronic pain comes from. Or there are other complexities. You can't say, “this is how you do yoga for chronic pain.” Key is letting people see that they have choices, so there's never a push. They don't need to be aiming for anything. They need to listen to their body and do what jells with their body. What feels nice? For too long, we've been told you have to push yourself. You've got to get to this point. This is your goal. I'm sick of external goals I want to work on my own goals.

I podcast to make a ruckus. Making a ruckus means sharing stories of learning on the journey towards best health. I'm trying to move the needle of health care a couple of degrees towards more self-confidence, more participation, more collaboration, more dignity and more inclusion. Wait a minute. I should tell you the truth. I'm a selfish person at heart. I'm a storytelling, patient/caregiver activist, living at peak capacity. I couldn't say that before my diagnosis. I podcast mostly for myself. My show notes are comprehensive with a full transcript and many resources. Find the recent podcasts here https://www.health-hats.com/pod.

A PODCAST EXPLORING WHY MAKING ART CAN BE MORE PRACTICAL THAN WE THINK

Creatives from all around the world share their artistic (and not only) journeys and explore the impact it has on their everyday lives.

---

Avo Kouyoumdjian is currently my piano professor at the MDW - University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna where I study Chamber music masters. Born in Beirut, Lebanon to a family of Armenian descent Avo began his studies when he was 12 years old at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna. Since then he founded International Joseph Haydn Chamber Music Competition and in 2002 he became the cofounder/ director of the Joseph Haydn Chamber Music Institute. If I know a musician/teacher whose eyes light up as he hears Beethoven, Ravel or any other composer - Avo is one of them. There is no way you can leave his teaching room without being inspired. Gladly, you can also hear this fire in his voice, almost like experiencing his piano lesson. So grab your headphones for this conversation and undiscovered music by A. Babadjanian performed by Avo and his friends.

Intro

Welcome to Health Hats, the Podcast. I am Danny van Leeuwen, a two-legged, cisgender, old, white man of privilege, who knows a little about a lot of healthcare and a lot about very little. We will listen and learn about what it takes to adjust to life's realities in the awesome circus of healthcare. Let's make some sense of all this.

Shiri ben Arzi: Fearless Medical Coach, Storyteller. Getting to Yes

So, for me, this is about leaving the world in a better place, when I'm gone, than when I came, so that's the goal I chose. Doing it mostly with medical coaching, but I also do that, personally. After that experience, I became, in a way, fearless. I'm not afraid of dying. I'm not afraid of pain. God knows I'm used to pain. I know how to deal with it. I hate it. If there's one thing that I am, one thing that might frighten me is living an unfulfilled life and something happening to my daughter. That scares me. Fear did come back after I became a mother, but the meaning is that I seek to promote goodness in everything that I do. And it was also learning to be good to myself. We talked about self-love. Be good to me and love myself and loving myself is not at others' expense because self-love is not selfishness.

When it comes to my health decisions, then I know that there are certain things I've learned how I like things done, and I permit myself to be the expert on my health. I'm not a doctor. This is why I have a fantastic doctor. I love him to bits. He's been such an amazing ally for me for over ten years. I have other people to assist me, but ultimately, I take full responsibility, yes, full ownership for the things that I know, for the things that I don't know, for asking for help. I know that taking care of myself is another way of being aligned with my goal to promote goodness to the world in a slightly better place. I need to take care of myself.

Danny Health Hats: Destination: Best Health. Life Goals. Symptom Goals

I have symptom goals as well. Symptoms like pain. As far as pain goes, I’d prefer to have no pain, but that isn’t realistic for me. I have a love hate relationship with opioids just like I have with steroids. They’re magic for a minute, and then absolutely awful. I get depressed, unpleasant to live with, and constipated. So, my goal is to prevent or reduce my pain to the point that the pain doesn’t consume me. Consume me, means that I can’t do anything. Mostly, I try to keep pain below a threshold where I can live life – activity, music, mood, not falling – my personal goals. Staying below that threshold means have regular habits that work for me – manage my weight, daily exercise routine, chiropractic, meaningful work, socialization (I’m an extrovert), liberal use of Tylenol and Ibuprofen, heat, cold, and vibration.
