Plants Grow Here - Horticulture, Landscape Gardening & Ecology

Dr John Martin manages the Hollows As Homes project with the Royal Botanic Gardens in Sydney, which is transitioning to the Wildlife Assist project in partnership with a range of organisations around Australia including Taronga Conservation Society. In this episode, we speak about the importance of tree hollows, why native miner birds are more ecologically destructive than introduced miner birds, and his best tips for building habitat in your backyard (which surprisingly don't necessarily include habitat boxes or bee hotels).

Ep.26 Yurbay: First Nations plant wisdom - Adam Shipp

Adam Shipp is the creator of Yurbay, an organisation in Canberra which introduces people of all walks of life to traditional Aboriginal wisdom and helps them reconnect to the beautiful nature of his area. He speaks about his roots as a proud Aboriginal man, some of the uses of native plants, and explains how the dreamtime isn't something that happened a long time ago: it's something that goes on forever and every animal and plant goes through cycles to experience their own dreaming.

Ep.28 Wildlife Assist - Dr John Martin (Hollows As Homes, RBGS / Wildlife Assist)

In our second episode with Dr John Martin of the Hollows As Homes project with the Royal Botanic Gardens in Sydney ( transitioning to the Wildlife Assist project in partnership with a range of organisations around Australia including Taronga Conservation Society), we're releasing a chat John and I had before our Trees As Habitat interview actually began. He's speaking about his work as an ecologist, including how flying foxes might adapt to heat pressure and how water sprayers may or may not be helpful, what a "bioregion" is, as well as some of his thoughts on what we need to be keeping in mind moving forward in Aussie ecology.
