2020 Angouleme Grand Prix Nominees
Pipeline Comics
01/21/20 • 11 min
Angouleme is right around the corner, and we now know the three names who are the finalists for this year's Grand Prix award. In this week's podcast, I'll be discussing them.
Lambiek biographies of the nominees:
Since recording this episode a few days ago, I've learned more about the two French nominees, and now I'm definitely rooting for Catherine Meurisse. The Comics Journal write-up on her is amazing, and I want to read a couple of her books right away now.
What I forgot about is that Guibert and Ware were the two runners-up last year. There's every possible chance they may repeat that this year. Ouch.

Google on Reviews
Pipeline Comics
05/27/21 • 17 min
I've written a lot of reviews in my time. For PipelineComics.com, alone, that number is up over 350.
So when Google recently outlined their opinions of what makes a good product review, I listened.
These are mostly meant for affiliate marketers who are just plain awful reviewers. Yet, it's fun to see how that applies to reviews of creative works such as comic. So here I am.
You can check out Google's guidelines here:

Raoul Cauvin and Jordi Lafebre
Pipeline Comics
05/12/21 • 12 min
Raoul Cauvin:
Over the weekend, Raoul Cauvin, veteran Belgian comics writer, announced that his cancer is bad enough that the doctor says he doesn't have much longer to live.
I said in the podcast that Cinebook only translated a couple of his "Cedric" books. I looked it up afterwards and realized that they do have seven books in their catalog from that series:
https://www.cinebook.co.uk/cedric-c-142_148_233.html
I've reviewed two of his Bluecoats books:
"The David":

"The Blues in Black and White:

Jordi Lafebre:
In happier news, EuropeComics announced on Monday morning that Jordi Lafebre's recent album is in the works and "Coming Soon." This is super exciting news.
Here is the announcement:
https://twitter.com/EuropeComics/status/1391712729434558466
I mention in the podcast that Jordi Lafebre is Spanish and then immediately refer to him as a French artist in the next breath. I should have phrased that as "French-published artist," which would make slightly more sense.
Follow him on Instagram at Jordi_Lafebre:

Also, I refer to "Glorious Summers" in this podcast more than once as "Beautiful Summers." My mistake. I'm rusty at this podcasting thing again, aren't I?

Top Ten Albums of 2019
Pipeline Comics
01/07/20 • 18 min
I reviewed more than 50 albums this year, but read many more. And now it's time to boil that down to the list of the 10 albums I liked the most. It's an insane list
I'll throw in the 11th that just missed, too, because it's the one book I had to talk myself out of putting in to make a Top 11 list. Decisions must be made, after all.
Oh, and #12 gets thrown in Just Because.

Retailers Are Brainstorming
Pipeline Comics
04/14/20 • 39 min
Before you listen to this podcast, read Brian Hibbs' article on Comics Beat: https://www.comicsbeat.com/how-comics-retailing-moves-forward/
The retailers document that I'm quoting so liberally from now requires permission to read. I don't know how freely they're granting that, to be honest. This podcast's dramatic reading of the article may be as close you get to it.

2020 "Resolutions"
Pipeline Comics
12/31/19 • 11 min
Coming at you from the Pipeline World HQ Basement once again (thus, the sound quality), it's the Pipeline Comics podcast!
I'm not a resolutions guy. I believe if you want to do something, you should do it. It doesn't matter what day of the year it is. And the plan can be longer or shorter than a year. Resolutions are too easy to ignore and not do when they're this arbitrary, for most people.
But I love listening to the year end podcasts where people review their resolutions and predictions from the beginning of the year to see how much has come true. I am a study in contrasts, so I'm resolving to do some stuff for Pipeline Comics this year. And I'm creating this podcast to keep me accountable at the end of the year.
I also reserve the right to throw all these resolutions out if I have a better idea at any time. So there!

Comics at Disney
Pipeline Comics
12/24/19 • 12 min
This is a story about a recent vacation in Orlando and where I found comic books. Disney keeps them out of the theme parks and in the Disney Springs' shopping venue.

Direct Market Doom and Gloom
Pipeline Comics
04/09/20 • 20 min
What if it all goes wrong? What if not enough stores survive? And Diamond fails? And publishers fold? This is the doom and gloom scenario thought exercise.
With a bonus tangent: What is government's role in the arts? Trust me, it's not as political as that sounds, but I'm thinking about this in a different way than I think most people do. It's worth bringing up, especially in light of a scenario which sees the comics market implode.
Except for Kickstarters, really, for as long as there are fans willing to back those....
Be my friend on DuoLingo in the French track. I'm AugieDB there.
