Performance Anxiety - Lyle Hysen (The Royal Arctic Institute, Das Damen)
play

02/23/22 • 82 min

Lyle Hysen’s career in music has been different from most. And as the drummer for the grammatically incorrect Das Damen, he schlepped his drums across the States and Europe. He toured with Screaming Trees and Nirvana before grunge took over the world. The band even toured as Arthur Lee’s backing band for a time. But Lyle’s career would take a left turn when he accidentally started a niche market licensing music for small, indie bands. That eventually led to the formation of Bank Robber music, where he’s helped so many bands stay in the business through the licensing and publishing side of music. But he wasn’t quite done making music. He’s a foundational member of The Royal Arctic Institute. Sounds fancy, I know. But they write some beautiful instrumentals. You have to check out their music, especially if you like cassettes, since that’s the only physical copy you’re going to get. Follow the band @theroyalai on IG, @royal_arctic on Twitter, The Royal Arctic Institute on FB. Pick up the album on Bandcamp or wherever you get music. We would love a review, a follow, stuff like that. We’re @PerformanceAnx on the socials. Get stuff at performanceanx.threadless.com. You can help support the show like our good friend Sandy Olivia at ko-fi.com/performanceanxiety. So do a few jaw exercises because I couldn’t stop laughing on this one. Performance Anxiety - Peat Rains (You Bred Raptors?)
play

01/27/22 • 64 min

If you’re looking for new music, this is the episode for you. Peat Rains of You Bred Raptors? (with the question mark) is the guest. He’s the kind of guy who started playing bass because everyone else was playing guitar. His introduction to music was a little different than most. His earliest influence was his deadhead pastor father. Immediately after high school, he was signed to a label in a Pennsylvania diner. It was one of those milkshake type of deals. He started playing 8 string bass because of a typo and a friend willing to front him $700. The band You Bred Raptors? has paid its dues by busking in New York City subways. But that’s also how they got the gig opening for Yoko Ono at MOMA, a TED Talk, and several birthday parties. Peat is very candid about being difficult to define, winning the all important wife demographic, and what Rick Springfield has or has not done for him. We also find out about the strangest tip the band has ever received. Follow the band @youbredraptors on social media. Buy music on Bandcamp or at their website youbredraptors.com (which is where you can also book them for YOUR next birthday party). Follow us @PerformanceAnx on social media. Support us at ko-fi.com/performanceanxiety or performanceanx,threadless.com. And without further delay, Peat Rains of You Bred Raptors? on Performance Anxiety on the Pantheon Podcast Network. Performance Anxiety - Kevin Whelan (Aeon Station, The Wrens)
play

02/03/22 • 55 min

Kevin Whelan is the guest on this episode of Performance Anxiety. You may remember him from a noisy band from New Jersey called The Wrens. He talks about forming the band with his brother, Greg. Up until his latest release, it was the only band he was ever in! Kevin reveals how The Wrens were once the house band on a ferry boat, and how his mom got them the gig. Once the band was signed, they forged their own path; so much so that the label wasn’t sure they could release their debut.  But the industry caught up to them and they were offered a huge contract after their second album…which they turned down. Kevin also sheds some light on the 5th Wren and the time they almost got killed at a party in New Mexico. Then reality hit and they had to get real jobs. But after a while, the music started coming again. Kevin’s new project is called Aeon Station and the album is coming out on Sub Pop, which is a dream for a 90’s indie guy! Give Aeon Station a follow on social media. Pick up the album through Sub Pop or wherever you get music these days. Follow us @PerformanceAnx on social media. Check out merch at performanceanx.threadless.com. You can help keep the show going with a coffee at ko-fi.com/performanceanxiety. So grab your own cup and relax with Kevin Whelan of Aeon Station on Performance Anxiety on the Pantheon Podcast Network. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Performance Anxiety - Bonham-Bullick

Bonham-Bullick

Performance Anxiety

play

05/12/22 • 99 min

My guests today are Deborah Bonham and Peter Bullick of Bonham Bullick. We talk about their musical histories, including the influence Deborah’s brother, the legendary John Bonham, had on her life. Deborah explains the 16 year gap between her first two albums, working with Paul Rodgers, and Robert Plant’s continual guidance. His ringtone on Deborah’s phone is Kashmir, by the way. They tell me how they started both their personal and professional relationships. They also tell me how they became Paul Rodgers’ band for his Free Spirit tour and how Peter found himself at Led Zeppelin’s secret reunion rehearsals. Their new album of interpretations spans seven decades of music. Pick it up now in all the usual places. Follow Peter, Deborah, & the band on all the social media platforms. Follow us @PerformanceAnx there, as well. Show us some support with a review or a cup of coffee on ko-fi.com/performanceanxiety. Merch is at performanceanx.threadless.com. Performance Anxiety - Grant Curry (Flood Twin, James Hall)
play

10/08/21 • 64 min

Flood Twin’s Grant Curry joins me on this episode. His road to music was neither direct nor easy. He was diagnosed with diabetes at age 8. By the age of 14 he was already in a drug treatment center. After going through rehab, he has stayed clean and even became a counselor. But music was always in the back of his mind, calling him. When the opportunity to take time off of work and play, he took it and never looked back. He met James Hall and created four incredible albums with James Hall & Pleasure Club. But after Hurricane Katrina uprooted his life in Louisiana, Grant relocated to Georgia and eventually formed his new band, Flood Twin. The band is releasing their debut album and it’s a beast! Not only is the music minimalist and powerful, but so is the artwork, which was also done by Grant. Follow the band @floodtwin. You can buy the album on Bandcamp or stream it everywhere. Follow us @PerformanceAnx on the socials. Feed us coffee at ko-fi.com/performanceanxiety. Buy things at performanceanx.threadless.com. Performance Anxiety - The Flat Five

The Flat Five

Performance Anxiety

play

11/05/20 • 64 min

Welcome Kelly Hogan, Nora O’Connor, & Casey McDonough of The Flat Five. The best way to describe this band’s music is familiar but surprising. They write nostalgic songs with lyrics about big bags of dope, kazoos, hot wheels, & peeing on the side of the road. Kelly, Nora, & Casey were a blast even though we had to fight through some connection problems. They love playing music with each other and just enjoying their connection, and it shows. And then we have a hat fight. Follow them on social media, but make sure it’s The Flat Five from Chicago.
