The Pigeon Champion of Pinxton - Part One
06/25/23 • 43 min
The Pigeon Champion of Pinxton
In late April 2023, the remains of a man were discovered buried on farmland near Sutton-in-Ashfield in Nottinghamshire. After weeks of painstaking work at the site, and with the help of the public, the remains were identified as that of 52 year old Alfred Swinscoe, a Derbyshire miner who had been missing for over half a century.
In this first of what will be an occasional series, we look into what’s known about Alfred, his life and the challenges an investigation like this represents to detectives.
Although they haven’t contributed directly to this episode, I would like to thank Alfred’s family for taking the time to listen to the episode in advance of publication and corroborating the biographical information I’ve been able to unearth.
If you are able to help Nottinghamshire Police in any way to find the answers the family are so desperately looking for, please call the enquiry team on 0800 096 0095.

Rachael Slack warned the authorities about her son's father, Andrew Cairns. He had threatened to kill her and they knew that. Like Tania Moore five years previously, Derbyshire Police failed to act on these warnings. As a result, an entirely avoidable tragedy occurred.
