Hello again beautiful people! I hope everyone is doing well. Since I can’t ask how you’re doing, I’ll just skip straight to myself. I’m getting loaded with vitamin D daily and chowing down on Nose to Tail meat like it’s my job. It actually kind of is my job. My pool and gym are back open and things are looking good from where I’m standing. I hope people listening can say the same. Let’s try to keep that attitude positive!
I’m talking to my new pal Dr. Phil Maffetone today who’s a super interesting guy with a long career doing amazing things. He first tried running his body on fat back in the 70s and has been one of the leaders in the world getting athletes fat adapted to achieve peak performance.
During his two decades in private practice and beyond, Dr. Maffetone has been a respected pioneer in the field of complementary medicine, bringing the latest advances to health-care professionals around the world. He is an internationally recognized researcher, educator, clinician and author in the field of nutrition, exercise and sports medicine, and biofeedback.
He’s worked with athletes in almost every sport at the highest levels including professional and olympic athletes.

Hey there friends, hope everyone is well. I’m on a vitamin D roll over here with another great guest talking about how it is a central part of almost every system in our body, including (and maybe most importantly these days) our immune system. Again I want to stress that D is not a vitamin, but a pre-hormone. I know talking about vitamins can make many people’s eyes glaze over. I am kind of one of these people actually. I think we can get all the vitamins and minerals we need from the food we eat and if we’re eating an ancestral, nutrient dense diet then we don’t need to supplement or worry about this kind of thing.
But vitamin D is different. Just like our bodies expect ancestral foods, we also expect an ancestral environment. Humans lived outdoors for all of history. Is it surprising at all that when we live and work indoors for the vast majority of the day this might not be ideal?
This interview also covers the link between vitamin D and the coronavirus. This is very striking and we go into even more studies and correlations on this. Tying this all together, we get into the efficacy of the lockdown. Ivor has been tracking this data for the last couple months. Nobody is minimizing the tragic deaths or saying the lockdown didn’t help in many ways, but maybe there is a smarter way to do “smart distancing” instead of blanket mandates for everyone in the country.
Maybe forcing people to be locked in their homes might actually weaken their immune system. Maybe it would have been better for people to get sunlight and vitamin D this entire time considering we have good data showing the virus isn't really transmitted outdoors. Maybe there are many unintended deaths from these lockdown measures. Maybe there was a different way to go about things once we initially reacted. These are all interesting questions and it’s great to live in the United States where you are free to ask these questions.
Ivor Cummins BE(Chem) CEng MIEI PMP completed a Biochemical Engineering degree in 1990. He has since spent over 25 years in corporate technical leadership and management positions. His career specialty has been leading large worldwide teams in complex problem-solving activity.
Since 2012 Ivor has been intensively researching the root causes of modern chronic disease. A particular focus has been on cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity. He shares his research insights at public speaking engagements around the world, revealing the key nutritional and lifestyle interventions which will deliver excellent health and personal productivity. He has recently presented on heart disease primary root causes at the British Association of Cardiovascular Prevention and Rehabilitation (BACPR). He has also debated Irish Professors of Medicine on stage, at the annual conference of the Irish National Institute of Preventive Cardiology (NIPC).

Hey, hey! How’s everyone doing? We’re living in some strange times. I really hope we find a way to end racism in the US and the world and I hope justice is served for that horrible police officer. I’m here in LA and just tried to go to the post office and found that it was closed and storefronts in the Venice / Marina Del Rey area were being boarded up. We all got messages to our phones saying a curfew would be enforced at 5pm. My friend got beat up in Santa Monica for trying to stop looters. I don’t know why he was trying to do this, but it looked pretty scary. Violence is not the answer. I hope everyone stays safe and we make some changes in our society towards true equality.

Today I’m talking to Professor Stu Phillips who is one of the world’s leading authorities on protein and muscle science. He shares vital information in this interview on long term health, short term health such as fat loss and muscle gain, as well as combating the multitude of protein myths out there.
Professor Phillips is the director of the Physical Activity Centre of Excellence (PACE), director of the McMaster Centre for Nutrition, Exercise, and Health Research, and a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Skeletal Muscle Health in Aging. In addition to being a full Professor in Kinesiology, also Graduate Faculty in the School of Medicine at McMaster University. He is a fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences (FCAHS), American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and the American College of Nutrition (ACN). His research is focused on the impact of nutrition and exercise on the mechanisms of human skeletal muscle protein turnover. He is also keenly interested in diet- and exercise-induced changes in body composition particularly in older persons.

Hello everyone, welcome back. I’ve been getting a lot of questions on dairy, grains, food processing, and what humans evolved to eat. This is a very nuanced topic so I wanted to do a thorough podcast with probably the best person in the world to speak on this, Dr. Bill Schindler. We frame this whole conversation around a recent New York Times opinion piece called “The end of meat is here” https://www.nytimes.com/2020/05/21/opinion/coronavirus-meat-vegetarianism.html
This is an absurd article that uses the coronavirus era we’re in as a way to propose that the human race should not eat meat anymore. It’s a strange notion that we’d stop eating the most important food in human history, a super food that literally made us human. I usually wouldn’t pay much attention to such a thing, but it was a good way to frame our discussion and expose all the errors the author made. It’s always fun to debunk these type of things but there's not always time for each and every one that keeps popping up. This episode should also go a long way to clear up many aspects of meat-eating and a proper human (or should I say Sapien) diet.
Dr. Bill Schindler is the director of the Eastern Shore Food Lab at Washington College where he is also an associate professor of archaeology and anthropology. Two years ago he co-hosted the National Geographic show The Great Human Race. He spent a year abroad recently continuing his hands-on research and professional development by immersing himself and his family with indigenous and traditional groups around the world to learn about their food and diets. As an experimental archaeologist and primitive technologist his specialties are in recreating technologies of the past to better interpret our ancestral diets. His current focus is learning how to translate the outcomes of that research into something meaningful for modern day diet and health and is working to fuse lessons from our ancestral dietary past with modern culinary arts to create a food system that is relevant, accessible and meaningful to modern Western life.

Hello, hello! What a beautiful day it is to be alive and well. I hope everyone is getting outside and getting some sun each day if they live someplace where that is possible. If not, at least getting outdoors and getting some exercise will have a ton of other benefits.
Today’s podcast is all about vitamin D and how it relates to human health and the immune system. Living a healthy lifestyle, avoiding metabolic disease, eating nutrient dense animal foods, and getting responsible sunlight all play into your vitamin D status. Even some supplementation can be sometimes very necessary and beneficial. I posted another great study out of Indonesia on the correlations between vitamin D status and deaths from COVID-19. I’ve been talking to Joel about this vitamin D stuff for about a year now and have been tracking it over the past 6 weeks during the Coronavirus pandemic. We’ve been trading information and it was good to see that some good data has finally been coming out. I kept mentioning getting outside and getting sun exposure but didn’t want to post anything definitive until the science was clear. I think we’re getting to that point now with multiple studies from multiple countries. Even Dr. Gary has been reporting extremely low levels in all his patients who are having bad cases of COVID.
