This is precisely why what we call mixed signal modules have been developed – they combine analog and digital functions on a single chip. It might have been complete science fiction back in the 1980s, but it now seems to be slowly becoming reality. As part of the Paris Climate Agreement, Europe has committed to limiting global warming to 1.5°C, if possible. To achieve this goal, industry must also make a substantial contribution to reducing emissions. In recent years, the focus has been on improving energy efficiency: according to Eurostat, industry was able to reduce energy consumption by 12.4% between 2007 and 2021. In the meantime, however, such a high level has been reached that in many areas a further increase in energy efficiency is only possible at disproportionately high costs. Moreover, the development is also reaching physical limits. In addition, there is currently the question of the secure availability of energy.
