Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace
Parkway Theater Podcast
04/30/21 • 66 min
In honor of the Star Wars holiday, the Parkway Theater podcast team reviews ‘Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace’ (1999). Technically the first film in the Star Wars timeline, two Jedis escape a hostile blockade in search of allies and come across a young boy who may bring balance to the Force, but the long-dormant Sith resurfaces to claim their original glory. Does the filming technology of the 1990s give it an unbelievable CGI effect that impacts the overall enjoyment of the film or are you able to appreciate it purely for the nostalgia?
Tune in as the team discusses the epic action scenes, lightsabers, the all-star cast, and decides if this is actually a movie for children. And stay tuned for the post-podcast discussion of burnt beard smell and Jedi funeral etiquette. May the fourth be with you!

The Life of Brian (1979)
Parkway Theater Podcast
04/02/21 • 50 min
The Parkway Podcast team jumps into the spring season with the religious parody ‘Monty Python’s The Life of Brian’ (1979).
A different perspective on an age-old tale, the movie follows Brian of Nazareth as he is born in the stable next door to Jesus Christ and spends his life being mistaken for a messiah. Does the film’s irreverent style of humor hold up? Banned in certain countries, is it still as controversial when viewed with a modern lens? Could this movie even be made today? The team answers these questions and more in this episode as they look to the bright side of life.

Episode 22 - Titanic (1997)
Parkway Theater Podcast
02/18/21 • 53 min
Tune into this special Valentine’s Day episode of The Parkway Podcast as the team discusses the iconic romantic historical fiction film ‘Titanic’ (1997) directed by James Cameron. This monster of a movie (in more ways than one) tells you the tale of a seventeen-year-old aristocrat (played by 21-year-old Kate Winslet) as she falls in love with a kind but poor artist (Leonardo DiCaprio) aboard the luxurious, ill-fated R.M.S. Titanic (RIP). At the time, it was one of the most expensive films ever made and won many awards equivalent of that value. Would things have ended differently if Rose had stayed in her lifeboat? Would they have lived their lives together if Jack would have lived? Is the modern-day context with treasure hunting Bill Paxton really necessary? Can more than one person float on a large, ornate wooden door? These questions and more will be answered by the Parkway Podcast team.

Tune in as the team raves over the pre-CGI practical effects and theorizes on which characters are actually ’the thing’ — and whether a mustache-less Wilford Brimley is technically still Wilford Brimley.

Once he's reminded of the impact his own existence has made on the lives of those around him, he is then, in turn, saved by the town! Has this number one inspirational film aged well over time? Tune in to this seasonal film discussion and hear why our team also needs to have an angel come visit us this holiday!

The Karate Kid (1984)
Parkway Theater Podcast
12/10/20 • 53 min
This week The Parkway Podcast recaps the iconic '80s film, ‘The Karate’ Kid' (1984). Join in as they discuss the first of the many films/shows that comprise the Karate Kid extended universe. After arriving from a National Lampoon-esq journey from Southern California, Danny Larusso (Ralph Macchio) finds himself the target of a group of bullies who study karate at the Cobra Kai dojo. Fortunately, he befriends martial arts master Mr. Miyagi (Noriyuki "Pat" Morita), who takes Daniel under his wing, training him in a more compassionate form of karate. The Parkway guys find that the film is less about karate than it is an '80s teenage romance, with sporadic bouts of martial arts disguised as manual labor.
