What does it mean to break down information in order to build up social competencies? And how does that relate to people with compelling social anxiety? In this discussion with the founder of Social Thinking, Michelle Garcia Winner, we explore the relationship between "being social" and social cognition (ie. social thinking). We touch on four areas of executive function that can foster our ability to learn how to take action on social dynamics that we want to do and are important to us. Get a better understanding of social dynamics and how to help your kids navigate them.

Michelle Garcia Winner, MA, CCC-SLP, is the founder and CEO of Think Social Publishing, Inc, (a.k.a. Social Thinking). Phil Anderton, a visionary in the field of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), has revolutionized the way we perceive and address this condition. Through his leadership at ADHD 360, the largest and most successful ADHD medical clinic in Europe, Phil and his team have consistently pushed boundaries and paved the way for new possibilities.

Listen to this Parenting With Impact episode with Phil Anderton about ADHD diagnosis and treatment.

Recommended Treatment for Children and Teens with ADHD Tip-Sheet

So -- your child has ADHD. Want to get past the confusion and the stigma really fast? This FREE Guide explains, in the simplest terms possible:

  • What is recommended treatment for children and teens
  • Ten things to consider when trying to make a decision about medication
  • Exactly what to look for in a behavior therapy training program. Short, sweet, and to the point -- don’t spend hours on the internet scouring.
  • ImpactParents gives you exactly what you need to know without wasting any time or effort.

Here is what to expect on this week’s show:

Phil discusses the systematic approach to diagnosing and treating ADHD in patients of all ages. His focus on providing comprehensive care through assessments, treatment, and support services reflects a shift towards acknowledging and accepting ADHD as a neurodiverse condition that requires attention and understanding.

Phil emphasizes the importance of addressing skepticism towards ADHD diagnosis and the benefits of medication and accommodations for individuals with ADHD. He advocates for improved outcomes and quality of life, using examples like comparing ADHD medication side effects to common pain relievers and discussing the necessity of accommodations, such as extended time in exams, to support individuals with ADHD in achieving success.

Phil emphasizes the importance of evidence-based practices in advocating for ADHD acceptance and treatment. By using medical evidence and a data-driven approach, Phil aims to address funding battles and challenge misconceptions about ADHD in the National Health Service and educational institutions, with the goal of making positive impacts on individuals' lives through evidence-backed interventions and treatment options.

Phil explains digitized clinic processes streamline patient journeys and enhance assessments through video conferences. By offering assessments in patients' homes, the clinic reduces anxiety associated with in-person visits, leading to more accurate results and improved patient outcomes.

Phil and Diane explain the ADHD diagnosis process can be simplified by blending qualitative and quantitative data. By using screening tools, DSM criteria, and semi-structured interviews, clinicians can streamline the diagnostic process to a few hours of focused assessment.

Have you ever thought about that word: Parenting?

Parenting is actually about us, not about our kids.

Sure, part of the job of parenting is 'child-rearing,' or 'raising kids,' or whatever you want to call it. With one of my kids, I used to say that it is "my privilege to supervise her while she raises herself."

But really -- parenting is not about them. It's about WHO we're BEING while we are doing the work of loving them and guiding them.

Our journey is to be with them on their journey -- and that can get complicated sometimes. Messy. Confusing!

If you are a parent who knows that this journey of parenting is definitely calling on you to learn some stuff -- if you know that your spiritual or emotional journey in life is being challenged -- then tune in to some highlights from this year's podcasts about the Inside Adventure of Parenting

And remember -- however or wherever you are on this fascinating journey of yours -- we're glad that you're on it with us!

One of the trickiest aspects of parenting with ADHD is that, very often, the best parenting strategies -- the ones that help our kids the most -- require calm, well-regulated parents. And that’s not always easy to accomplish when parents have their own big emotions. In this conversation, we’ll identify at least 2 of the 10 main differences in an ADHD brain that create more intense negative emotions (in kids and adults), and get guidance on 2 essential components to manage those challenges. We’ll talk about why ADHD brains feel their feelings so intensely, and how we can manage our own emotions even when our kids are pushing every last button.

Marcy Caldwell, Psy.D. is a clinical psychologist, writer, and proud mom of 2 in a family full of ADHD who has been helping adults with ADHD thrive for over twenty years. She is a passionate advocate for adults with neurodiverse brains and is dedicated to helping them create environments that unlock their unique genius. Marcy is the founder of ADDept.org, a blog and digital resource for adults with ADHD, the owner and director of The Center for ADHD, and the creator of Meltdown to Mastery, an innovative digital program that helps adults with ADHD learn to better regulate their emotions.

Listen to this Parenting With Impact episode with Marcy Caldwell, Psy.D. about navigating emotions.

Here is what to expect on this week’s show:

Marcy highlights that individuals with ADHD tend to amplify negative stimuli while minimizing positive ones, leading to a cycle of negative emotional feedback and self-perception.

Marcy emphasizes the importance of allowing oneself to experience a range of emotions, including big joy, anger, and sadness.

Marcy shares the concept of decreased early sensory encoding in ADHD brains; this phenomenon causes individuals to process negative information more intensely than positive information, leading to heightened negative emotions.
