"To create equality regardless of sexuality, gender or race while focusing on the language we use and how we can shift it to become more inclusive. To educate people on inclusivity, mental health, self empowerment and non conformity. As well as empowering LGBTQ+ people to love themselves and developing strategies on how they can best accept themselves."
- Brock McGillis
We go on and off the ice with the first men's professional hockey players to publicly come out as gay, Brock McGillis! Brock is a role model and trailblazer for advocating for LGBTQ+ awareness and equality in professional mens hockey, and mainly male dominated major league sports in general. He takes the us through a slap shot of his story and growing up in Sudbury, ON, and how his influences from his father and beyond brought him to the ice, spending his days at the local ice rink. He eventually established his craft and this brought him into a stable career as a pro hockey player.
Now, as a retired player, Brock has is continuing to grow his network and initiatives through being part of his acclaimed show (This is Shit) produced by WOW+ with co-host, RuPaul's Drag Race S7 Alum, Ms. Kasha Davis. They share their life stories and triumphs to present day. After 30 years of hiding Brock's true identity, he is able to be hisSELF.
Brock opens up about coaching kids and teens hockey currently and how he hid his sexuality from his community, yet found out everyone knew of it and held no judgment. Listen for a profound story of how his kids stood by him and continue to through making change for future generations and equality for anyone LGBTQ+ in specifically mens sports.
Brock is also in the process of co-founding a non-profit, which is going to provide programs and resources for fellow LGBTQ+ youth, globally, to safely pursue and play sports inclusively.
Brock has many talents and skills that he shared about as well and perhaps he may just return in the future to expand on these elements of his life as well.
