Eve Muirhead is one of the world’s most successful curlers – most recently becoming Olympic Champion as skip for the British team in 2022 at the Beijing Winter Olympics in February 2022 and World Champion in the Mixed Doubles in May 2022.

She also carried the flag for her country at the 2022 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony.

Her achievements began at an early age when she won the World Junior Curling Championships, aged just 17. She went onto win that tournament four times in total.

In addition, she has performed to a consistently high standard in the World Championships – winning a silver medal in 2010, a gold in 2013 and a bronze in 2017, and in the European Championships, where she has won two bronze, four silver and three gold medals since 2010.

Eve, who was born into a farming family in Blair Atholl, has strong connections with the local area. She is a member of curling and golf clubs in Perthshire, and also regularly trains at the National Curling Academy in Stirling.

Outside of curling, Eve has piped at four World Championships, and plays off a very low handicap at golf, having turned down the opportunity to become a professional golfer in 2010.

She has also received the award of Doctor of the University from Stirling University and an OBE from the British Government in recognition of her outstanding contribution to British sport.

She has recently retired from curling professionally and is enjoying figuring out what she wants to do next!

Outside & Active - Harrison Ward - The Fell Foodie
play

09/13/22 • 59 min

This week on the Outside & Active Podcast Dom speaks to Harrison Ward, otherwise known as the Fell Foodie

Harrison Ward is a proud Cumbrian who has turned the mountainous landscape he calls home into his kitchen. After discovering a passion for hiking in 2016 following a drastic life change, it wasn’t long before a lifetime love of cooking was merged with this new vice. These days he can often be found creating delicious, restaurant style meals on minimal camping equipment up in the hills or voicing his struggles with mental health and alcoholism on various platforms and stages.

In this podcast episode, Harrison speaks extremely openly about his battles with mental health after turning to alcohol during his time at York University, as well as the domino effect which lead to the sudden breakdown of a relationship - ultimately proving as a turning point in his life. This cathartic turnaround began the journey he finds himself on today, where Harrison treasures each day and can often be found walking up and cooking on the Fells around the Lake District.

He uses his experiences to help others who may be going through difficult times, whilst cooking some seriously delicious food!

A warning that this podcast features the topic of suicide and suicidal thoughts.

Outside & Active - Brian Wood - The Ultimate Sacrifice
play

04/04/22 • 34 min

In this episode of the Outside & Podcast, we talk to a good friend of Outside & Active, Brian Wood.
Well known for the documentary (and book) of his story on the BBC titled Danny Boy, we documented Brian’s journey back in November as he ran 25 marathons in 25 days in memory of fallen comrades through the Iraq & Afghanistan conflicts with one mile dedicated to every 635 lives lost.

He describes himself as “not a runner” – we beg to differ. We talk to Brian about the battle of Danny Boy and then on to his running journey with the Ultimate Sacrifice and how it has helped his mental health and physical health and strength.

Brian raised £170,000 for charity Walking with Wounded. You can sponsor Brian here or if you want to follow Brian's Keep Attacking series of events or merchandise, please do check out his website here.
