In The Bubble with Andy Slavitt: From CMS to Accidental Podcast Hero
Out of Patients with Matthew Zachary
06/20/23 • 37 min
[FANBOY ALERT] For most healthcare geeks, Andy Slavitt may be best known as the Former Acting Administrator for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). For millions more, he is the podcast hero we didn't know we needed and the one we so clearly deserved as the host of Lemonada Media's award-winning podcast, "In The Bubble with Andy Slavitt."
Launched just before the world went to shit in early 2020, In The Bubble became a literal voice of reason while we were sanitizing our Amazon boxes and fighting for toilet paper at Costco as if they were Cabbage Patch Kids in the 1980s. A weekly vocal elixir of sorts, Andy and his storied dry wit blended healthcare policy, layman's breakdowns, and human vulnerability with a healthy splash of entertainment thanks to such early guests as Tina Fey, Al Franken, and Matthew McConaughey. Each episode brought — and still brings —a little structure and sanity to an otherwise chaotic world. Today, Andy is currently USofCare Co-Founder and Board Chair Emeritus and still fighting the system for the benefit of all Americans to get less screwed by our broken healthcare system,.
In the Bubble has been on my Mount Rushmore of podcasts since day one. Subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts.

SportsCancer Recap: ABVCC 2022 Conference
Out of Patients with Matthew Zachary
11/15/22 • 17 min
In today's bonus episode of Out of Patients, I welcome back to the studio returning champion Gail Zahtz. We recently attended a super wonky, jargon-filled trade show, and we're here to break it all down for you—the listener— in ordinary human lay speak. The Association for Value-Based Cancer Care (AVBCC) is a behind-the-scenes organization deep in the subbasement of healthcare. Their purpose is to ensure that the "right patients" get prescribed the "right medicine" at the "right time," hopefully with minimal drama, while avoiding anyone going bankrupt. That's the gist. So strap in as we attempt to de-wonkify a bunch of acronyms in corporate bingo land, and maybe—we hope— you learn something along the way that can make your healthcare experiences suck a little less. Enjoy the show.

Cancer Mavericks Goes To Hollywood
Out of Patients with Matthew Zachary
11/16/21 • 39 min
For decades, the portrayal of cancer in movies and television was grim. If a character was diagnosed with cancer, it was a near certainty they'd be dead by the credits. But, like cancer treatment itself, Hollywood evolved, and many storylines about cancer became stories of survival. In this episode, we ask the question, "Who influences us and why?" From musicians to television stars, film producers to televised cancer screenings, when celebrities lend their voices to raising awareness and fundraising, that kind of star power can move mountains. Join us as we hear from voices such as actor Patrick Dempsey, StandUp2Cancer Co-Founders Katie Couric, Pam Williams, the late Laura Ziskin. Also appearing in this episode: Steven Hoffman (Professor of Global Health Law and Political Science at York University in Toronto, Canada,) Dr. Larissa Nekhlyudov (Director of Internal Medicine for Cancer Survivors at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute,) Kami Kosenko (Professor of Communication at North Carolina State University,) and Milton Kent (Former reporter and sports columnist for The Baltimore Sun). [BONUS] The GenX/GenZ Ultimate Therapy Throwdown
Out of Patients with Matthew Zachary
12/31/24 • 43 min
What happens when two fresh-faced Gen Zers—Matthew Zachary Worldwide Chief of Staff Jenisa Ramprasad and Marketing Intern Lauren Woodring—sit down with a cranky, nostalgia-fueled Gen Xer (ahem, Matthew Zachary)? Chaos, hilarity, and surprisingly deep insights.
This is not your typical Out of Patients episode.
What started as a casual, unscripted chat turned into a generational therapy session touching on everything from floppy disks, cassette tapes, and AOL chat rooms to TikTok-induced existential crises and frenetic media consumption with no "ohio baby gronk rizz" or "skibidi toilets". (Whatever that means)
Why are Gen Zs so quick to cut off friends? Can you really form deep bonds with someone you've never met in person?
And what was the deal with Blu-rays anyway? (Thank you, Producer Kyle Moore, for your added insights) We tackled all the questions, shared plenty of laughs (awkward and intentional), and even found common ground in our shared love for real, human connection.
If you've ever felt caught between the "back in my day" crowd and the "why does everything move so slow?" generation, this episode is for you.
Prepare to channel your inner dope/phat/fresh inner teenager while cringing to pop culture mansplaining, and maybe even feel inspired to unplug for a minute (but only after you finish listening, of course).

The Lost Pilot of The Cancer Mavericks with MZ's Mom!
Out of Patients with Matthew Zachary
12/26/23 • 50 min
Knownst to me, but unknownst to others, long before the Award-Winning documentary "The Cancer Mavericks: A History of Survivorship" hit podcast feeds, a pilot episode was storyboarded and produced to test the waters with our newly minted production team, helmed by acclaimed executive producer, Steve Lickteig. If all went to plan, we would proceed with the heavy lifting needed to bring this 320-hour, 8-episode history series to life. Suffice it to say, it indeed went to plan.
For this pilot episode, the chosen topic would center around a history of cancer throughout the last century's zeitgeist of mainstream film and television. The storyboarding around this pilot would ultimately lay the groundwork for what would become Episode 6 of the final series, titled "Caner Mavericks Goes To Hollywood."
So, who better to join host and narrator Matthew Zachary for this exploit of pop culture-meets-healthcare narrative than his mother, Roz Greenweig? A 30-year veteran educator within the NYC public school system (Kindergarten and First Grade,) Roz is also an ardent, veteran, encyclopedic cinephile who holds a Master's Degree in Film History and Film Studies with a concentration in Film Noir.
Together, Mother and Son wax poetic on the taboos, the trends, and the trajectory that the cancer narrative took over the past 100 years across scores of films and television series.
Thanks to this pilot episode, the project was greenlit to bring to life the groundbreaking, award-winning, and "appointment-listening" documentary The Cancer Mavericks: A History of Survivorship.

Introducing: The Cancer Mavericks
Out of Patients with Matthew Zachary
06/01/21 • 4 min
Most people don’t know that you’re considered a cancer survivor at the moment of diagnosis. It wasn’t always this way. Sixty years ago, a cancer diagnosis was a death sentence. And if you did survive, you were left to figure out the rest of your life on your own. But some survivors demanded something different, something better. From OffScrip Media, this is Cancer Mavericks, a deep-dive narrative into the people who fought for better treatment, forced doctors to listen, and pushed America to see the human side of the disease.
