Lesson Summary:

Alma and Amulek refuse to give up on the people of Ammonihah. This week, Alma will teach us about Melchizedek and his ability to use the power of the Priesthood to change a sin-sick city. Alma’s message resonates with some, but others turn violently against the truth. They’ll execute women and children in front of Alma and Amulek, almost daring them to intervene. Later, they’ll strip these mighty men of God of everything possible but Alma and Amulek stand strong. After a harrowing time in prison, they plead for help from the Lord and receive deliverance. Amazingly, they’ll use that freedom to lift the pains of Zeezrom and help restore the Nephites to peace and truth. It’s a beautiful week of study.

Questions to Consider:

Alma 14:8 | Why is the war tactic of targeting women so effective at long-term destruction? Is the opposite true? If we care for mothers, can we change the world? Could that be what motivates our Relief Society leaders today?

Alma 15:18 | What does “strengthening him in the Lord” mean? Are there important parallels between this story and the parable of the Good Samaritan or any of the miracles of Jesus from the New Testament?

Alma 16:4-8 | When have you seen other stories like this in scripture? Does this still happen today? How do leaders turn to the prophet today for economic, military, or political guidance?
