Homesteading Hacks, Tips & Tricks
Our Kind of Homesteading

We've got lots of homestead tips from years of experience livin this homestead life!
- Keep your hay twine from your hay bales!
Hay twine comes in handy for so many things, once you start using it, you won't know how you lived without it before!
- Keep zip ties on hand plus wire cutters for those times when you need to mend fences quickly or other homestead issues.
- Start small....your homestead will evolve and grow with you as you gain more experience. Don't start too big to where you're overwhelmed with too many animals or too many obligations.
- Know your climate. It may seem obvious, but you have to know how to prepare your property and animals for your specific climate.
- Know you will make mistakes and things will go wrong AANNNDDDD.....that's ok! You gotta learn how to crawl before you can walk, right?
- If you have kids, give them age appropriate tasks to do while you are getting your farm chores done.
- Install lights where you know you sometimes on your homestead at night. Solar lights for pathways, battery operated motion lights for places electricity can't reach, and electrical lights for sides of houses, barns and other buildings.
- You need to have an evacuation plan in place for fire, and any other natural disaster. Have small crates cleaned, ready and accessible for small indoor animals. Have a trailer ready for larger farm animals and animals that NEED to be taken with you. (Animals that can run fast have a much better chance at getting away from a disaster vs an animal who can't run...like a tortoise or a pig. You can also write your phone number with a sharpie marker on hooves of cows and horses or write your phone on the fur with spray paint.
- Make sure your water pipes are secure. Unsecured water pipes sticking out of the ground can be easily broken

Our Kind of Homesteading
11/10/21 • 32 min
CHICKENS!!!!!!!!!!!......they’re not all made equal. ;)
You’re at the feed store, notice the adorable peeping chicks and think to yourself, “It’s a chicken, I’ll just grab a few....they’re all the same anyways, right??”
No, my friend, nooooo! Put the baby chick down!! First, listen to our podcast, and maybe inquire on good ole’ Google......and THEN decide which type of chicken breed is right for your homestead. ;)
Do you want chickens for eggs? For meat? For pets? (Yes, people have chickens as just pets) ;) Maybe you want egg layers but are interested in meat birds in the future?
Whatever your answer, there’s a bird for YOU!!
In this episode, we chat about all the different reasons for owning chickens and give you several breeds best suited for each category....
Meat Chickens
Egg Layers
Dual Purpose (egg layer AND a meat chicken in one)
Companions
Hint for this weeks Animal of The Week:

Helpful Predators, Their Skills and How They can Assist Your Homestead
Our Kind of Homesteading
09/15/21 • 36 min
Wait, what? Helpful predators....
Sounds like an oxymoron, right?!?!
Predators aren't always what they seem. ;) Don't judge a book by it's cover, right??
In this episode, we chat about the most common predators you may see and how they can help your homestead!
- Opossum
- Skunks....these little guys have an amazing talent that should appeal to everyone!
- Predatory Wasps...sounds creepy, right? Hint: these guys are GREAT for your garden!
- Hawks
- Snakes...may seem obvious, but often times these guys are judged too harshly and not given credit for the HUGE favor they do the entire world
- Raccoons
- Mountain Lions
- Wolves
- Coyotes....most think of these guys as a menace but they are excellent hunters and take care of a very specific little mammal that no one wants too many of, especially on their homestead.
- Fox
- Cats
Moral of our story?
Hint: Life is a balance. ;)

Homesteading in the Winter, How To Manage Your Time More Efficiently in Winter Hours!
Our Kind of Homesteading
10/27/21 • 32 min
Homesteading always seems to throw fast balls our way, but in the winter months, when we have less light hours and inclement weather, it can seem exceedingly challenging! ;)
Since winter is almost upon us (here in Northern Cali we've already had several rain storms!), we thought it was the perfect time to chat about how to best take advantage of these winter months.
Fist off, The Unusual Animal of the Week!!
- Here's your hint: These guys are NOT mammals and they can have a lifespan of up to 20 years!!
I know, I know!!.....What could that possibly be?!?! Listen to the episode to find out!! ;)
Our bullet points for this gab fest.....
- Set up your day to get things done outside while it's light.....this may seem obvious, but you'd be surprised at how much the day can get away from you during inclement weather. ;)
- Pre-plan for what you're gonna do INSIDE when it's dark. For example: the other day during our morning chores, we made sure to haul several buckets of beeswax to the back door during the daylight (and rain) so that we could start the long process of cleaning it all. ;) It's something that needed done and also something that could be done inside. :) It's a win win!!
- Get into the mindset of planning ahead and remembering that less light outside means less time for chores and other outside homestead stuff. :)
- Some other ideas for things that could be done when light gets scarce : ;)
*Baking (Obvi, right?)
*Knitting, Crocheting, Sewing.....if that's your jam, plan ahead to get all your handmade stuff made after the sun goes down. :)
*Planning/Researching your Spring Garden! Always a fun past time and the perfect activity to do on a rainy evening. Mmmmm.....with a cup of hot tea in front of the fire. :)
*Soap making....takes a bit of planning aheads to enusre you have everything you need. :) Fun and useful.
*Candle making....another super useful past time. Beeswax candles anyone?
*Building in an oudoor shop or barn
There's so much more, this was just a short list to inspire. :)
Let us know what you do during the winter months when you have less light. We'd LOVE to hear from you!! :)
