We OTs are navigating an ever-changing maze of legislation, reimbursement, and care-delivery models.
But, this week’s article calls us to focus on our profession’s most important relationship of all: our relationship with our clients.
Get ready to really ponder the nature of our partnerships with clients...and to consider these relationships in terms like trust and vulnerability.
The researchers held focus groups that examined how patient/provider relationships are changing due to both parties' reliance on the internet for answers. The results are fascinating.

Early Mobilization in the ICU
OT Potential Podcast | Occupational Therapy CEUs

This article subverted my expectations, to say the least. The researchers looked at the effects of early mobilization in the ICU, and their findings might surprise you, too.
At the same time, reading this article left me feeling more confident than ever about occupational therapy's unique role in helping ICU patients regain function. (Not to mention, our overall focus on function in all settings!)

Conventional OT versus high tech approaches

An ongoing topic we've seen in research is whether high-tech interventions outperforms conventional OT care. And, this latest episode certainly contributes to this conversation, as we talk about virtual reality in acute stroke.
While we absolutely need to keep technology developments on our radar, I hope you find renewed confidence that your clinical reasoning may be what our patients need most.

#7: POTS & COVID-19 Long Haulers with Emily Rich (CE Course)
OT Potential Podcast | Occupational Therapy CEUs
01/31/21 • 62 min
The struggles of COVID-19 long haulers have caught the attention of the medical community. In many cases, symptoms seem to correlate with a little-known condition called postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS). But, even before the pandemic called attention to POTS, research and advancements in treatment were taking place in the background. Unfortunately, while the research is out there, POTS is not always understood by health providers, and proper diagnosis can take years.
Occupational therapy has a potentially significant role to play in the lives of both POTS patients and COVID-19 long haulers.
In this month’s hour-long podcast episode, we are luckily enough to talk to POTS researcher and practicing clinician, Emily Rich. We discuss what we do and don’t know about POTS, as well as the strategies you can use to help these patients get the most out of life.

12/10/21 • 59 min
If you haven’t been following the exciting research behind the CO-OP ApproachTM, this episode is for you.
CO-OP stands for Cognitive Orientation to (Daily) Occupational Performance. This is a trademarked approach with a formal certification program, so we won’t be teaching the actual method. However, we’ll be discussing the research behind the CO-OP ApproachTM, as well as some ways it can impact your practice.
We’ll explore the primary research article, where the CO-OP ApproachTM is performed by OTs in a group setting. You’ll see its impact on “body function, activity, AND participation,” and you’ll be pleased to learn that the researchers determined the approach works 🙂
After spending time in the article, we will be joined by Tee Stock, OTR/L, OTD, MS, MBA. Tee owns her own practice providing pediatric therapy in the home, and she is also certified in the CO-OP ApproachTM. She and I will discuss the research and practical implications for OTs, so you can gain useful takeaways for your own practice.

#30: OT for Spinal Cord Injury with Simon Carson
OT Potential Podcast | Occupational Therapy CEUs
04/18/22 • 59 min
Our spinal cord injury clients stay in our hearts and minds. After all, we help them and their families navigate tremendous life changes.
This week’s article gives us a solid big-picture review of what we know (and don’t know) about spinal cord injury rehab. You’ll learn about commonly used assessments, as well as which treatments are gaining traction (and which ones aren’t.)
And, most importantly, this article serves as a good reminder that there are simply no magical, straightforward answers in this area of rehab. Instead, these patients benefit most from your occupational therapy lens and your commitment to staying on top of evidence-based care.
To help guide us through this article, and pull out actionable takeaways for your practice, we are excited to welcome Simon Carson, OT/L, MBA. Simon serves as the chief of occupational therapy at the University of Rochester Medical Center.

#82: OT and Leadership with Victoria Garcia Wilburn
OT Potential Podcast | Occupational Therapy CEUs
06/06/24 • 56 min
The world desperately needs OT leaders.
It needs leaders that can think holistically. It needs leaders that understand both individual level change and systems level change. It needs storytellers, collaborators, and compassionate thinkers.
And, these are the qualities of an occupational therapy professional.
Today, we’ll explore a paper on best practices in OT leadership curriculum development. This will help us understand the practical steps involved in leadership development. Both as an individual, and for preparing our profession to be one of leaders.
After we review the article, we are thrilled to welcome to the podcast, Dr. Victoria Wilburn, State Representative for Indiana House District 32. Her and I will discuss the hard-won lessons she has learned about leadership. And, the advice she has for OTs to step into leadership, in whatever role they occupy.

#84: Swim Safety in Autistic Children with Erika Kemp
OT Potential Podcast | Occupational Therapy CEUs
07/11/24 • 57 min
If you have not been paying attention to recent statistics on drowning, you need to be.
After decades of decline, deaths by drowning are on the rise.
Groups already at higher risk have seen the greatest increases in drowning deaths. This includes adults ages 65 years and older of all races and ethnicities, as well as Black people of all ages.
But today, we’ll focus on an especially high-risk group: children (and particularly, children with autism). Drowning is the leading cause of death for children ages 1 to 4, and children with autism spectrum disorder are 160 times more likely to experience nonfatal and fatal drowning than their typically developing peers.
Whatever setting you work in, I hope these sobering numbers convince you to pay close attention to water safety. Here, we’ll look at an aquatic OT swim safety program that you could consider implementing in your community.
Next week on the OT Potential Podcast, we will welcome the article’s lead author, Erika Kemp, for a discussion on the logistics of launching a swim safety program. We’ll also tackle big picture questions—like how to go about mobilizing the entire OT community to prevent drownings in our communities.
