13. Grief & a Moment that Changed Everything with Darlene Male

Ordinary People Extraordinary Things

Death & grief are not easy to talk about, but by not talking we may be missing an opportunity to show love to someone that desperately needs it in their time of loss.

Here’s a few questions we answer on this episode...

  1. Is it true that time heals all wounds?
  2. What did people say & do that were helpful and life-giving to you?
  3. Do you like it when people talk about Bret?

You’ll hear these quotes and so much more from Darlene

  • “Deep love comes with intense grief.”
  • “If you set grief aside and don’t allow yourself to grieve - it doesn’t go away. You do have to walk through it.”

** Darlene was also a part of Episode #10: How “Ordinary People Extraordinary Things” Began

12. God's Calling and Unmet Expectations with Amber Gandolph

If you’ve walked with God for any amount of time & heard God calling you - maybe it didn’t turn out how you thought, the expectation you had wasn’t met, or God said now turn this way.
+”There was a big gap between our expectations and reality.” ~Amber

Amber shares her family’s intimate adoption story of Laney joining their family and then becoming a part of another family.
+ ”There’s this expectation I had that God would show up in the way I wanted Him to, because I was doing what He asked us to do. Not to say God didn’t show up, but it wasn’t how I expected Him to show up.”

The reality of Laney being placed with a new family...
+ “It’s a form of grief...We question - why did it have to turn out this way.”

+ “Now I can also look back and think - I do not regret that we obeyed God in this difficult decision, even though it didn’t turn out the way we thought it should.”

+ ”There was a lot of shame involved, which is not from God, but it does make you question why things are the way they are.”

**My prayer through this podcast is that you will answer God’s call on your life and give Him your expectations.

14. Goodness & Forgiveness out of the Columbine High School Shooting with Dana Bollwerk

BONUS episode: We are days away from the 23rd Anniversary of the Columbine High School Shooting that shook our nation.

Today I get to talk to Dana Bollwerk, Rachel Scott’s sister, the first victim of the Columbine Massacre.

Dana comes on and answers some questions:

  • Can anything good happen from this?
    • “Only God could take something as horrible as Columbine & transform it & use it in such an amazing way.”
  • Are you ever mad at God?
    • “Let it out. Let Him know what you are really thinking & feeling & allow Him to speak to you in that area, because He can and He will.”
  • How do you go from mentally understanding you should forgive to putting that into practice?
    • “Even when it feels impossible to forgive - we can give that to Him as often as we need to.”

“It’s an honor to share Hope out of the Tragedy.” ~Dana

**This episode is a reminder that you never know what people are carrying or what is going on in their lives & to show kindness.
