Ongoing Mastery: Presenting & Speaking

Ongoing Mastery: Presenting & Speaking

Kirsten Rourke

Presenting and Speaking is an art and a science. Confident public speaking and presenting are crucial for entrepreneurs, thought leaders, and C-suite executives. So how does someone with great ideas transform into a skilled public speaker? Public speaking can be difficult for many, MANY people. Introverts would rather crawl into a blanket fort and hide than be in the spotlight. Experienced public speakers need a place to deepen and extend their presenting skills. Each episode of the Ongoing Mastery: Presenting and Speaking podcast features conversations and interviews on performance, presenting tools, and public speaking. Kirsten draws on her 20+ years as a speaker and trainer to share her insights and talk with industry leaders. Irreverent, nerdy, and unafraid to call it as she sees it, Kirsten will be your snarky friend who tells it to you straight while making you laugh. New episodes drop every Tuesday morning. Join the Ongoing Mastery community and thrive as a presenter and public speaker. https://www.rourketraining.com/

02/07/23 • 19 min

In this week's episode of Ongoing Mastery: Presenting & Speaking, Kirsten talks with her long-time friend Laura Packer, who’s an award-winning storyteller. Laura says that getting started in storytelling is a lot like learning to ride a bike – you won’t fall often and you won’t hurt yourself too much, but you have to get out there and do it.

Key take-aways:

  • Neurology studies have shown that listening to told stories has a measurable effect on the brain that shows up on an fMRI scan
  • Storytelling engages the parts of the brain associated with senses and with action
  • Bringing stories into presenting and speaking and allowing yourself to be a little bit vulnerable is the way to connect with audiences
