83: How to Engage Students Online and How to Ensure Equal Access

Today I sit down with Brian from the dynamic duo Wise Guys. Brian and I talk about how to engage students while online with connections, games, fun technology, and more. We also have a great discussion about the importance of providing equal access to education for all students. I hope you will join us.

Key Moments in the Show:

Kids aren't a test score. Kids are not based on assessments. Kids are creative. Kids are unique, and they need time to be able to have that. If you start a school year by just going full core, It's going to be disastrous. From day one, you're going to lose kids right away and the kids that are doing okay are going to be stressed out from the workload. And I really worry for districts that just want to go back and throw everything at students right away. That's not what they need right now. If you look at childhood trauma that's going on right now it is really increased significantly. And we need to be there for the whole child. Yes, academics are important. I think we all want our students to succeed. But in order to get there, you have to have that commitment to community and that commitment to caring. If you don't have caring and community, you can't succeed. ~Brian Wiltgen

Today's show is uncomfortable. It is in the uncomfortable that we will disrupt white fragility and increase our capacity to sustain the discomfort of not knowing. I hope you will join me.

I know for me I want to do and be better in terms of being anti-racist. It isn’t enough to not be a racist. I need to be anti-racist. We don’t have to be a racist to benefit from the system of racism.

This is a hard conversation, but one that must occur to eliminate barriers for our students of color. I know I struggle to start this conversation, but it is one I hope will impact the necessary change we need in our educational systems and classrooms.

71: Distance Learning: What are the Trials and Treasures?

The best/worst thing all at once is it shows how American teachers and students can turn on a dime and revolutionize education delivery in A WEEK! Wow! We have adapted so quickly so that is the best! Teachers have come together and worked to make creative solutions! The hard part is we did it without budgets, training, or materials. This is a tremendous amount of stress on teachers and students

Classroom Set Up

Classroom set up requires a great deal of intentional thinking. Where is your furniture? Can you get around quickly? Do you offer an alternative seating option? Do you have a cool down spot? Remember that proximity is the key.

Start with how you plan to set up your classroom. You will want to keep two major issues in mind.

You will need to be able to see all students at all times. If you want nooks or private spots in your classroom, you will want to make sure you have a procedure in place for those areas and that you can get to them quickly. This takes a lot of practice and trust with your students. So if you feel leery of that, then open them up. Things can happen in a blink of an eye.

You want to be able to get anywhere in the room with lightning speed. So have open pathways to every area.

Today we talk about intentional classroom set up with areas that are non-negotiable and areas that would be nice to have. Thinking spaces through will help everything run smoother.

8 Mindful Tips for Teaching Children Gratitude

Gratitude is a practice. It results in positive thinking. In a difficult time and world, the one true factor that can make the most impact is exercising gratitude. It is complex, yet very simple. The cause of resentment and poor behavior is a direct result of feeling undervalued, not worthy, not heard, and not cared about. When we focus on the things in which we do value and are the most grateful for, we can change resentment into gratitude and love. Recognizing and expressing gratitude towards children can change everything. Expressing gratitude is a simple answer to a complex problem. We need to stop thinking about gratitude as emotion and begin to live it as an action. Living your life as an expression of gratitude is the greatest give you can give a child and yourself.
