One Part Podcast's Should I Be...?

One Part Podcast's Should I Be...?

Jessica Murnane

Right now, a lot of us are asking some pretty deep questions about our careers and how we make our money. Is this the job I really want to be doing? Is there something more "me" out there? Should my job be changing the world? Or can I just get my check and go watch more TV. Host Jessica Murnane also has these questions. And in this new limited series, you'll get to the bottom of them together. She'll be asking all the questions to all the people whose jobs we think we want. So we can figure out if we want them, too.

One Part Podcast's Should I Be...? - Episode 39: Doing It Because You Love It With Erin Gleeson Of The Forest Feast
play

07/09/15 • 45 min

It’s the Season One finale of the One Part Podcast! One whole year has gone by since launching the first episode. It’s so crazy! There’s been lots of laughing, some tears, many an F-bomb, and tons of planty recipes.

I cannot thank you all enough for listening, sharing the episodes, tweeting up a storm, and just plain supporting the show. You’ve helped create a cool and thoughtful OPP community that we can all be part of, and I love you all so much for it.

For the finale, I wanted to go big! So I headed to Instagram to ask you who you wanted to hear. There were so many great suggestions (some I’ll for sure be using in Season Two) – but I could only choose one....

Today’s guest is Erin Gleeson from The Forest Feast! She’s cool, a super-talented photographer, a NYT Times best-selling author, and just a freaking nice person. And you know we’re all about nice people around here.

In this episode, Erin and I discuss leaving her career behind in NYC to move to a cabin in the woods, how that move influenced the career she has today, her inspiring approach to creating and maintaining her brand, and her advice on putting your work out there.

On this week’s episode, I talk to Melissa Baswell Williams – the designer and founder of the lifestyle website Bubby & Bean. I had never spoken to or met Melissa before this interview but have always had a lot of love for her. When my brand was just starting, she asked me to be on her site. I had a handful of Instagram followers, not a lot of readers, and was just figuring stuff out. But Melissa didn’t care and still wanted me anyway. She’s sweet like that.

In our talk, Melissa shares for the first time the very personal and intimate details behind the creation of her website, how it helped her cope with a traumatic event in her life, and why she decided to start taking her family’s online privacy seriously.

After ten minutes of meeting John Michael Schert, I asked him to be on the podcast. He didn’t even know I had a podcast, and I didn’t really know anything about him – I just knew that he was awesome.

In this episode, John Michael and I talk about how to get out of your own way, the impact of his mother coming out when he was a teenager, what he learned from being a dancer, and learning to give space to the unknown. Sound heavy? It sorta is. But it’s also one of my favorite episodes yet.

Bari and I talk about all the ins and outs of being a ceramicist. Including going to school vs. being self-trained, building your brand and attracting clients, pricing, trade shows, the difference between fine art, collectible design, and open edition works, knowing when/how to build your team, and how sometimes things are ruined by being monetized aka maybe it’s ok to keep your art as a hobby.

About Bari: Bari Ziperstein is the founder of BZIPPY, a brand known for its experimentation and innovation with ceramics. Their clients include some of the most prominent interior designers working today, and BZIPPY’s work can be found in private homes, public venues around the world, and the pages of magazines. Outside of BZIPPY, Bari’s unique designs, were seen most recently in a one-person exhibition at Charles Moffett Gallery in New York City Show Notes: BZIPPY WEBSITE + INSTAGRAM Bari’s WEBSITE + INSTAGRAM JULIA HAFT-CANDELL SEAN GERSTLEY LUAM MELAKE RUBY NERI My books: ONE PART PLANT COOKBOOK KNOW YOUR ENDO Our Sponsors:

This week’s guest is Hillary Sawchuk. She’s the creator of the popular interview series A Drink With and an all-around inspiring woman. Hilary has interviewed everyone from Common to Steve Forbes to Kurt Russell for her site. And looking at the super-polished, pulled-together brand she’s created, you’d think the she’d be kicking back and drinking champers with celebs. But Hillary explained in our conversation that things aren’t always as glamorous as they appear. And neither was the journey to get where she is today.

We discuss how she went from a utilities intern for The Pistons (where she was literally carrying a cord around behind a cameraman) to becoming on-air talent, the reason she started A Drink With, how she’s monetizing it today, and why she believes getting told “no” can still be a small victory for your brand.

Last week was a big week, the week I got my book deal. After months of back and forth, with contract negotiations I signed the contract. And then almost threw up opening my first advance check. And DID throw up after meeting with publishers in NY. If you’re starting here, I wouldn’t. Go back and start from the beginning.

When I left you at the end of the episode, I was about to move to Charleston after living in Chicago for nearly 16 years. Remember, I was going to start my book as soon we arrived and I could unpack my kitchen boxes. But it didn’t really go as I expected...

This week, Iâ€TMm talking to Hillary Peterson. Hillary Peterson is founder and CEO of True Botanicals (a non-toxic beauty brand). Prior to founding True Botanicals, Hillary was CEO of Marie Veronique Organics.

In this episode, Hillary and I discuss how her thyroid cancer diagnosis changed her career path, creating products that are 100% safe vs. 100% natural, her mission to change the skincare industry, playing big (including her decision to take an investment from Unilever), and why perfectionism is the booby prize in life.
