One Bold Move A Day - 29. Returning to Work Amidst Coronavirus
play

06/22/20 • 5 min

As more states start to re-open, you may face a re-entry to work (and the commute that comes with it). If you work in an office, like I do, this can come with a lot of different feelings. This episode provides tips to help you and your team prepare for a potential transition or return to work in an office. Know that things will never be like what they were before. If you’re feeling uncomfortable, this is a sign that you are experiencing change—and with that comes growth. I’m spending time reflecting on what I am learning from all of this and what I want to keep—or get rid of—for the future. How will you take what you’ve learned and bring the best of that to yourself and your leadership in the “new normal”? Your One Bold Move: Help you and your team prepare for a potential transition or return to work in an office where you can feel as great as possible about next steps.

You’ve heard it all before, “It’s business, not personal” or “Don’t take that personally”. These statements have always ranked high in the business jargon pet peeve list for meIt’s basically the business version of “No offense.” When you invest in your work, and yourself, it’s personal. This episode shares why I take my work personally and here’s why you should consider doing the same thing, if you want to relate more to your team members, produce your best work, and create a more inclusive organization. Your One Bold Move: Consider how work is personal for you and how that makes you more deeply engaged with what you do. If you’re a manager, create an environment where your team feels connected to their work and each other. One Bold Move A Day - 211. What Got You Here Won't Get You There
play

05/13/21 • 4 min

Your strengths helped get you to where you are today. Doing more of the same thing or doing it better will not, however, lead to sustainable growth. What got you here won't get you where you're going next. (I should mention is a book by the same title and that’s not really what this is about. I had mixed feelings on the book, though it’s clearly celebrated by many.) This episode shares three things you need to do to level up. This will be important in transitioning to the next normal, going from peer to manager, taking on a promotion, leading as your team grows, etc. Your One Bold Move: Reaching the next level will require new learning and adaptability. Believe in yourself and what is possible for where you’re going next. For more from Shanna: Text SHANNA to 66866 to get my leadership and career tips directly to your inbox twice monthly. When you want to achieve something, you write it down. Whether it’s a SWOT analysis, a formal action plan, or even a memo (or email) outlining goals—you’ve seen the power of listing out your intentions. A research study done at Dominican University in California shows that writing down your goals makes you 42% more likely to achieve them. Why not apply this approach to your own career and personal development? Today marks halfway through 2020. I suspect this is not how you thought this year would turn out, but it doesn’t change how hard you worked to get here. Your One Bold Move: Write a letter to yourself. Use this to remind you of your strengths, your why, and who you want to become. If you post a screenshot of the podcast or this episode on social and tag me @ShannaAHocking and #oneboldmove, I’ll send you a free copy of a template you can use to draft your letter to yourself.
