YHS on Monster Island - The Yong(ary) and the Worthless: A Look at South Korea Kaiju Films
On Monster Island - Godzilla, Kaiju, & Tokusatsu!
10/30/21 • 81 min
Long before the South Korean film industry was putting out groundbreaking and critically beloved flicks like The Host and Parasite, they bestowed upon the world such epic daikaiju dumpster fires as Yongary, Monster from the Deep (1967) and War of the God Monsters (1985). The question isn't if the "The Tattooed Titan of Tokusatsu" Jacob Walsh and "The Mayor of Toku Toy Town" Jay Key enjoyed these two movies - it's if they survived them. Though Yongary's historical significance on the Korean film world is legitimate and undeniable, it provides little shelter from itchy monster dances, rectal bleeding, poorly hidden flame throwers, and thinly veiled metaphors regarding South Korea's geo-political views following the Korean War. It helps redefine the word "boring". But less than twenty years later, the world was treated to what can only be described as the cinematic interpretation of insanity in its purest form. Stock footage Tsuburaya monsters described as "dinosaurs". Bones that may or may not cause children to get sick. Uncomfortable emotional and physical abuse. A sociopathic pre-teen. And that baby scene...oh, that baby scene. Maybe there was a reason this film was lost.
In addition to traversing the landscape of South Korean kaiju, Jake and Jay discuss some hot news items such as the approaching Godzilla Day and the two huge announcements - the official Toho short, Godzilla vs. Hedorah (in honor of Hedorah's 50th anniversary), and Super7's tease of their next reveal (the first wave of Ultimates, maybe?). The two hosts also compare pick-ups; Jake flexes his cute credentials with a "pumpkin" Negora and LitGodzi Space Godzilla cup...Jay battles back with a cool MaxToyCo Ultraman and a set of Eiji Tsuburaya 100th anniversary finger puppets from Yutaka.

YHS on Monster Island - What Kaiju Need a Reboot or Reimagining?

YHS on Monster Island - What Kaiju Need a Reboot or Reimagining?
Kaiju world rejoice! "The Tattooed Titan of Tokusatsu" Jacob Walsh and the "Mayor of Toku Toy Town" Jay Key have returned to record together - and what better way to get back on the horse (kaiju?) than discussing ways to give some love to undervalued and underappreciated monsters? It's a little bit fantasy filmmaking, a little bit intellectual kaiju commentary - but mostly it's just weird. After all, can Jay really sell us on the idea of a new Varan movie? Can a horror historian like Jake convince us that Godzilla could be creepy and scary for an entire film? Is there any point to saving Minya? And what about all of those alien races in the Toho universe? Your favorite hosts dive deep into these questions on this episode of YHS on Monster Island!
But that's not all! Jake and Jay discuss some recent film re-watches that range from the absurd (the alternate ending of Little Shop of Horrors) to the absurd-er (Gamera: Super Monster), kaiju collectible news (looking at you, Mezco!), and some personal collection-defining toy pick-ups including a Jacob Walsh "grail"! Also, did Jay just complete his Yamato Takeru mini-collection?

YHS on Monster Island - Orthogonally Diagonalizin' Godzilla: Singular Point
On Monster Island - Godzilla, Kaiju, & Tokusatsu!
07/22/21 • 69 min
Godzilla: Singular Point has taken the kaiju world by (a big red dust) storm! But does one need an advanced understanding of temporal physics to enjoy it...or can you just sit back and watch Jet Jaguar slice and dice his way through a swarm of Megalon-Kumonga-Hedorah-Kamacuras-Gigan hybrids and be satisfied? YHS on Monster Island's hosts, "The Tattooed Titan of Tokusatsu" Jacob Walsh and the "Mayor of Toku Toy Town" Jay Key, try and answer just that - plus, what monster designs delivered, how it improved on the last Godzilla anime, did it handle time travel better or worse than Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah, and what may be in store for season two. It's an episode jam-packed with a metric ton of technobabble (not really) befitting of a podcast that even Ashihara considered the undiscovered 14th stage of the red dust (not really), breaching time and space beyond what was ever thought possible by the Archetype (also, not really).
In addition to Godzilla: Singular Point, the hosts share their sofubi and LitGodzi hauls and Jay shares some quick thoughts on Birth of Japan/The Three Treasures and The Howl from Beyond the Fog.
Also, use promo code YHS10 at TokuToyTown.com for 10% any purchase! No minimums. No usage limit. No expiration. YHS10 gets YOU 10% off any kaiju collectible, tokusatsu toy, or rare sofubi at Toku Toy Town!

YHS on Monster Island - A Very Special Episode: King Kong Lives (Jake vs. Jay)
On Monster Island - Godzilla, Kaiju, & Tokusatsu!
09/09/21 • 79 min
In a YHS Universe first, the two hosts of YHS on Monster Island - "The Tattooed Titan of Tokusatsu" Jacob Walsh and "The Mayor of Toku Toy Town" Jay Key - go head-to-head (kinda) as they both review 1986's KING KONG LIVES in isolation from one another (probably in that damn bunker in Georgia with Lady Kong). They don't know what each other thinks of the film - so you, loyal and valued listener, get to see if they are truly in sync like they tend to be on the show...or if this will result in a schism that their personal and professional friendship cannot withstand. Tune in to find out that and, at the end of the day, it's a movie with alligator-eating apes, giant artificial hearts, drunk rednecks, Linda Hamilton, glorious '80's feathered hair, and a bold cinematic choice from Director John Guillermin that involves a frog. It's King Kong Lives!!!
