S3: E1 - The Vaccine and the Old Nerd
Old Nerd in the Gym Podcast
08/31/21 • 74 min
According to the most recent set of data released by the Kaiser Family Foundation (dated August 18, 2021), only 72% of adults in the United States have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccination. While this is an improvement over some earlier numbers, cases of covid are skyrocketing with nearly 3,100 new cases being reported daily in Ohio alone (ODH). Constant politicizing and the spread of misinformation on the issues of personal protective devices, such as masks, and the safety and effectiveness of the vaccines has led to an increase in the spread of this terrible disease.
A great number of medical experts feel the government tried to bring the country back to "normal" far too soon before the virus had been contained to a manageable level. Cries of personal liberty and economic subjugation forced politicians to bend and ease restrictions, discontinue mask mandates and social distancing requirements, and even urged some legislators to pass laws preventing schools and businesses from forcing the use of safety measures by students and patrons.
On our premiere episode for season 3 of Old Nerd in the Gym Fitness Podcast, your hosts Gery Deer and Julie Barth speak with Dr. Leann Poston, former pediatric physician and assistant dean of the Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine. Dr. Poston talks about the need for people to seek out factual medical information and avoid the politics of the COVID problem to help ensure the safety, not only of themselves and their family but others who may be more at risk.
In this no-nonsense discussion, Gery and Dr. Poston discuss how the vaccines work, dispel many of the myths surrounding their safety and effectiveness, and cover where to find the most accurate, non-political information.
About Our Guest
Leann Poston, MD, is a licensed physician in Ohio who holds an MBA and an M.Ed. She is a full-time medical communications writer and educator who researches and writes about medicine, education, and healthcare administration.
After practicing in a physician group practice for eleven years, Leann taught students at all academic levels, wrote curricula for both medical and business colleges, and served as an assistant dean at the Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine. Leann’s writing and teaching experiences have led to several awards in the education profession.
Our appreciation to Dr. Poston for assisting with the production of this episode.

S3:E3 Hospice and the Old Nerd
Old Nerd in the Gym Podcast
02/15/22 • 71 min
For those caregivers dealing with someone suffering from a debilitating or terminal illness, hospice care can be one of the most valuable services to both patient and family. Unfortunately, there is a great deal of misinformation regarding hospice so we decided to tackle this difficult subject in this episode of the Old Nerd in the Gym Fitness Podcast.
Hospice is much more than "end of life care" for terminal patients. Services range from palliative, in-home, and in-facility care, to grief counseling and family support. There are more than 5,000 hospice organizations in the United States, many of which are not-for-profit organizations.
Our guest for this episode of Old Nerd in the Gym Podcast is Kim Vesey, RN, CHPN, MS, general manager of Ohio's Hospice of Dayton, in Dayton, Ohio. Kim has been a hospice nurse for 37 years, starting into that area of practice only one year out of nursing school.
But Kim isn't just a healthcare professional working in the hospice industry. Unfortunately, she's also had personal experience, going through the loss of her husband and daughter. Her experiences personally and professionally have given her insight that helps families make informed choices while maintaining emotional strength and dignity.
Hospice care is not something arrived at lightly by patients or families. One of the most difficult aspects of caring for his parents was when Gery Deer's family had to make the difficult decision to involve hospice support. In the case of his mother, he had the support of his father, close cousin, and siblings, as well as adult nieces, to make those choices. But when it came time to care for his father, he made that decision alone - and without hesitation. The benefits of hospice care to ensuring the quality of life and palliative support were invaluable. After his father's death, hospice services included grief counseling, vital to dealing with caregiver survival issues like guilt, grief, and depression.
Experiencing loss is challenging for anyone, at any age, but can be especially difficult for young children. Sadness, fear, and loneliness can overwhelm a child who's lost someone close to them. To help grieving children, Kim has written a series of illustrated books, beginning with, "What Cloud Is My Mommy In." Beautifully illustrated by Amy Gantt, the "What Cloud" series deals with the loss of parents, grandparents, and siblings, through the eyes of a child. S2 : E13 The Physical Therapist and the Old Nerd
Old Nerd in the Gym Podcast
09/25/20 • 63 min
Old Nerd in the Gym Fitness Podcast Description - Season 2: Episode 13
The Physical Therapist and the Old Nerd
In our Season 2 Finale, Gery and Julie welcome Dr. Chelsea Walter, a physical therapist from the Lebanon, Ohio area who has started her own, in-home/in-gym practice. Chelsea talks PT and the various differences between therapies as well as helping you to understand how it’s much more than just something you do after an injury.
About Healthy Movement Physical Therapy and Wellness and Dr. Chelsea Walter
Healthy Movement Physical Therapy and Wellness, LLC is a mobile, concierge PT, and wellness practice founded by Dr. Chelsea Walter in 2020. This practice was born out of wanting to help people in a way that was lacking with traditional physical therapy. Chelsea spent five years working in an outpatient PT clinic for a local hospital network. During this time, she learned that the insurance-based model squeezed too many patients into one day and left the therapist minimal personal time with the client. The choice to go out-of-network was easy. Outside of the corporate model and without insurance dictating care, she is now able to give clients the attention they deserve and to treat them as more than just an injury or another insurance claim. (On Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/healthymovementPT) FAQs - https://www.healthymovementpt.com/faqs
Chelsea’s background is in physical therapy with an emphasis on the treatment of spinal conditions. She graduated from Saint Louis University in 2014 with her Doctorate of Physical Therapy and completed undergraduate work at the same institution. From 2018 to 2019, she was a post-graduate resident with the McKenzie Institute where she achieved certification in the McKenzie Method of Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy (MDT) and board certification in orthopedics (OCS). Chelsea enjoys working with clients who are active in the gym or with recreational sports. She has led an active lifestyle from early on in life and enjoys hiking, travel, and spending time with family.

OLD NERD IN THE GYM FITNESS PODCAST SPECIAL EDITION
BY GERY DEER
“THEN THE WHOS, YOUNG AND OLD, WOULD SIT DOWN TO A FEAST. AND THEY'D FEAST! AND THEY'D FEAST! AND THEY'D FEAST! FEAST! FEAST! FEAST! THEY WOULD FEAST ON WHO-PUDDING, AND RARE WHO-ROAST BEAST.” - DR. SEUSS’S “HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS”
BUT WHAT IF YOU’RE THE ONE WHO, FOR WHOM A FEAST COULD BE A CULINARY MINEFIELD? WHAT IF YOU’RE THE WHO WHO’S ALLERGIC TO THE WHO-PUDDING AND RARE WHO-ROAST BEAST?
IF YOU’RE LIKE ME AND THE OTHER 26 MILLION AMERICANS WHO SUFFER FROM FOOD ALLERGIES, HOLIDAY BUFFETS CAN BE A DANGEROUS FORAY INTO THE UNKNOWN. FOOD ALLERGIES MIGHT BE LAMPOONED ON YOUR FAVORITE SITCOM, BUT THERE’S NOTHING FUNNY ABOUT THEM. IT’S TRUE THAT MOST RESULT IN MILD SKIN IRRITATION OR DIGESTIVE DISCOMFORT, BUT MANY ARE LIFE-THREATENING.
WITHIN SECONDS, AN EXPOSED VICTIM CAN EXPERIENCE SEVERE SWELLING OF THE THROAT AND LARYNX, CONSTRICTING THEIR AIRWAY, AND EVEN SUFFER ANAPHYLACTIC SHOCK. IN THESE SITUATIONS, QUICK MEDICAL ATTENTION IS VITAL.
IT’S A GOOD IDEA TO LEARN ABOUT FOOD ALLERGY CAUSES, SYMPTOMS, AND FIRST AID. SOME OF THE MOST COMMON FOODS PEOPLE ARE ALLERGIC TO INCLUDE COW’S MILK, EGGS, FISH, SHELLFISH, TREE NUTS, PEANUTS, STRAWBERRIES, WHEAT, SOYBEANS, AND SESAME. THESE ARE CERTAINLY NOT THE ONLY ONES, AND YOU MIGHT NOT EVEN KNOW YOU’RE ALLERGIC TO ANYTHING UNTIL IT HITS YOU.
THE AFFLICTION DOESN'T DEVELOP UNTIL ADULTHOOD. I ONLY RECENTLY DISCOVERED MY OWN ALLERGY TO KIWI FRUIT AND CANTALOUPE.
PROCESSED FOOD CONTAINS A PLETHORA OF DANGEROUS INGREDIENTS AND MOST ALLERGENS ARE PRINTED ON PRE-PACKAGED FOOD LABELS. UNFORTUNATELY, DEPENDING ON THE AMOUNT, SOME INGREDIENTS MIGHT NOT BE LISTED. FOR EXAMPLE, IT’S STILL COMMON FOR SOME LABELS TO OMIT SESAME AMONG POTENTIAL ALLERGENS. A GOOGLE SEARCH MIGHT SHOW DETAILED INGREDIENT LISTS OR ALLERGY WARNINGS FOR SPECIFIC PRODUCTS. OTHERWISE, STEER CLEAR ALTOGETHER.
IF YOU OR SOMEONE IN YOUR FAMILY SUFFERS FROM FOOD ALLERGIES, I CAN OFFER A FEW TIPS TO HELP NAVIGATE THE HOLIDAYS, AND THE FIRST ONE IS A NO-BRAINER. SINCE MANY HOLIDAY GATHERINGS ARE POTLUCKS, YOU CAN BRING YOUR OWN SAFE FOOD AND AVOID EVERYTHING ELSE. OR YOU COULD HOST THE EVENT YOURSELF FOR PEACE OF MIND. IF YOU DO HOST, LABEL THE DISHES, AND MAYBE, IF YOU WANT TO BE AN ALLERGY-SAFE SUPERHERO, PROVIDE A FULL LIST OF INGREDIENTS.
FOR CHILDREN, CARRY SAFE FOOD, OR SEE TO THEIR PLATE FOR THEM. KIDS ALSO SEEM ESPECIALLY SENSITIVE TO NUTS, AND HOLIDAY GOODIES ARE FULL OF THEM, SO KEEP AN EYE OUT. TO AVOID CROSS-CONTAMINATION, USE DISPOSABLE UTENSILS TO SERVE YOURSELF OR CARRY YOUR OWN FLATWARE. TRUST ME, IT’S WORTH THE TROUBLE.
FOR THE FOOD-ALLERGIC OUT THERE OR THEIR CAREGIVERS, YOU MIGHT WANT TO ASK YOUR PRIMARY CARE PHYSICIAN IF YOU SHOULD CARRY A PRELOADED EPINEPHRINE INJECTOR (OTHERWISE KNOWN AS AN “EPIPEN”). IF YOUR ALLERGIC REACTION WERE TO CAUSE RESPIRATORY DISTRESS, IT MIGHT BE A GOOD IDEA TO BE PREPARED. A FOOD SENSITIVITY TEST MIGHT ALSO HELP.
FOOD ALLERGIES DON’T HAVE TO WRECK THE HALLS. ALL YOU NEED IS A LITTLE PREPLANNING, SO NO ONE TURNS AS GREEN AS THE GRINCH AFTER A HELPING OF YOUR FAMOUS WHO HASH.
