2. How to Can Jam Without Using Tons of Sugar
Old Fashioned On Purpose
08/12/19 • 21 min
It’s summertime, and beyond the beautiful weather, it means that all of the amazing fruits are in season. What does in-season fruit mean? Jam of course! While I love to make jam, I’ve always found that most jam and jelly recipes are loaded with added sugar. If you’re anything like me, you want to use as little added sugar as you can. Today I’m going to teach you how to easily create incredible tasting jams with having to overload them with white sugar.
Some key highlights from today's episode:
• Ways to make jam without overloading them with sugar
• The incredible science of pectin
• Why I like to use honey as a sweetener
• Click here for my favorite pectin! https://pomonapectin.com/
Click here to get access to my series of FREE videos demonstrating the process that I detailed in today’s podcast. https://www.theprairiehomestead.com/jam

S11 E16: The Rise of The Farmfluencer
Old Fashioned On Purpose
03/13/23 • 36 min
I've been sharing homesteading online since 2010, but lately, the online homestead world has started to feel different....
If you spend much time surfing Instagram, you might think you need a historic white farmhouse, period-appropriate clothing, and a magazine-worthy kitchen to live this old-fashioned life. But is the rise of "farmfluencing" actually hurting the movement?
How can we celebrate the beautiful while also embracing the ugly? We're diving into this sticky topic on today's episode!

139. Starting a Homestead From-Scratch: Unexpected Side Effects of Buying Your First Property
Old Fashioned On Purpose
07/02/20 • 44 min
Starting a homestead can be a daunting task. It can be even more overwhelming when you compare yourself to a seasoned homesteader such as myself. While "how do I start a homestead?" is one of the most common questions I receive, after living the homestead life for almost 12 years I'm a little disconnected from the startup portion of the journey. Today I'm happy to announce that my sister Jenna has come to save the day. Recent life changes have driven her and her husband to buy a 10 acre property and begin their own homesteading journey. Join us as we chronicle the building of Jenna's homestead from the ground up. Today's focus is on the feeling of becoming a first time homesteader. Jenna realling the moment she realized the whole thing is real was a magical experience. If you've wanted to start a homestead but had no idea where to start, start here!

S3 E9: But Wait! There's More (Planning a Fall Garden)
Old Fashioned On Purpose
02/22/21 • 33 min
Summertime is a garden season, right? I don't know about you, but that's how I operated for the longest time. To be honest, I couldn't even conceive of being able to do anything in the garden after the August harvest. While you might not be able to plant a full garden in the fall, there are some amazing benefits to growing vegetables from September on into the early winter months. In today's episode, I cover the vegetables that thrive in the fall, when you need to plant your fall garden (hint: it's not in the fall), and cover crops that'll help your garden thrive in the future. If you've ever wondered how you could extend your gardening into colder months, this is the episode for you.
Concerned about preserving your garden bounty with the on-going canning lid shortage this year? I found the perfect solution!
Harvest Guard canning lids are not only 100% reusable, they are a fraction of the price regular lids are selling for online at the moment. They are BPA-free, earth-friendly (since you don’t have to toss them in the trash after one use), and work GREAT!
Check out their selection of regular and wide mouth lids at http://theprairiehomestead.com/canninglids and use code HOMESTEAD for 10% off your entire order— and shipping is always free.
