Ohio Outdoors Podcast - Sportsmen's Empire

On this week’s episode, the guys sit down to talk with Greg Kazmierski of Whitetail Partners in Ohio. Greg brings his past years of deer hunting to Ohio to work with the Whitetail Partner consulting service. Greg’s passion for white tails is evident in his work with designing and helping land owners with their hunting properties. Greg is a Michigan native, who gives his insight on how to utilize different land features from swamps to ag fields, and everything in-between. Greg also has the ability to use drone technology for mapping properties and utilizing new technology to take your property to the next level.

Paul was privy to a trip out west in the past week, where he got to do some special workouts with our friend Brayden from GoWild as well as the crew from Mountain Tough. More info to come from Mountain Tough, but as we get closer to the New Year, now is a GREAT time to start thinking about healthy life style choices.

Andrew spent a lot of time the past week cleaning up his deer skull which is now hanging proudly in the living room. The guys are wrapping up the year and gearing up for the holidays. Deer numbers from the extended gun weekend are in, and King Coshocton continues to reign supreme. Not sure if there are really any deer left out there, but congrats to them for continuing to bring deer to the freezers. Some Walleye and Perch hatch numbers are in as well. Central basin yellow perch numbers are still down, but the Western Basin is well above average for Walleye and Perch.

This week is a special week to folks from Ohio and the state up North. Each year the football teams come together for an epic battle on the gridiron. We know this isn’t a football show, but when we have the opportunity to bring a couple Buckeye legends on the show to discuss outdoor activities, as well as a game between two undefeated giants, you just do it. This week on the show we talk with Anthony Schlegel and Jeff Heuerman (and Kyle Waters, friend of Jeff’s) to discuss hunting, fishing, and football.

For real information that will help you afield next week, we also have Andrew Buck Michael from WSYX in Columbus. Andrew is a long time Ohioian that spends a lot of time outside and knows the importance of an accurate forecast for those outdoor activities. He gives us a run down of what the gun season should like, as well as the rest of the year. He discusses thermals and a few other topics during the segment.

Paul and Andrew have returned from the first deer camp of the year. One doe in the freezer, and more to come on that trip. As Paul mentions, we made a new “friend”, Terrance, who may or may not be a 300 lb black bear, as well as many other great memories.

This week the guys got the chance to pick the mind of there great Derek Towles. Derek is a friend of the show, from down in Kentucky. Let’s put it this way, Derek is like a mix of Superman, Santa Clause, and Daniel Boone. He saves the day as a first responder as his career, ships packages from the GoWild warehouse for fun, and spends all the rest of his time in the woods. It’s kind of an awesome gig! Derek has had success in the woods of Colorado already this fall hunting black bears, and hunts a nice piece of private land in Kentucky. We cover different rut tactics, stand locations, and how to maneuver throughout the month of November.

Depending on how you look at it, Paul is either winning or losing in the game of archery. The deer he shot at won that battle, but Paul put a hurting on a tree in the process! He recaps his killdeer hunt and trick or treat. For Andrew the week was much slower in the woods with reduced amount of time spent outside. Work, Life and patience...

Our O2 hunt camp member of the week is Alex Herman. Alex grew up in Wisconsin but has migrated to the Buckeye State. He was skillful enough to take down his first buck with a compound bow earlier this season. Alex recaps the hunt and how it worked out!

For many of us, being a butcher is not our full time job. We might break down an animal 1,2,3 times during the year if we are lucky. Each year we find ourselves making the decision of taking the animal to a processor or doing it in the garage ourselves. This week the guys have the honor of talking with Nick Otto, the Huntavore, and discussing how to break down deer. Nick’s passion for all things cutting, cooking, and culinary shows in discussion of the topics. He goes through the basics of what you can do in the field to help set yourself up for success at the butcher. The guys also cover the basics of breaking down an animal, specifically a whitetail deer, and how to get the most of your meat.

Paul is recovering from sinus surgery, but doing well! Andrew’s quest to fill the freezer before the rut continues, and he’s on the board with number 2. Of course nothing happens as expected, so the story of the “missed” doe, and the follow up/week later doe comes to an end.

A lot of news around the great state of Ohio. Hocking Hills state lodge is open, state wide pheasant release is coming soon, new fishing regulations and more. The state wide deer harvest as of 10/13/22 is 13,009, with 4739 being antlered deer, 8270 being antlerless, and Coshocton county has regained its reign as the king county at 535 deer.

We would be remised if we didn’t discuss the moronic stories out of Ohio as well. We dive into the walleye tournament scandal, and the Ohio hunting lease scandal as well. We aren’t lawyers, just average spectators, but C’mon man!

This week the guys are back at it from the heart of central Ohio, feeling like we are all at the North Pole. Cooooooold. The year is plugging right along, as they sit down to talk with Zach Johns. Zach took down “double D” this fall, a double drop tined white tail buck that was a monster. Zach gives us the run down of his hunt and all that it took to bring down this brute.
