Episode 1: Life of a Silver Chief Nursing Officer
OhemaaTalks Podcast
05/13/20 • 89 min
Akwaaba to the first episode of OhemaaTalks. The episode was inspired by our Care Workers everywhere and NHS England. I would like to thank all our Carers and key workers for their amazing work.
I was joined by my friend and Senior Renal Nurse, Clayton Ellis. We discussed his journey into nursing and what inspired him to dedicate his life to the profession. Clayton has over 10 years’ experience and currently works at St George’s Hospital in the Renal Home Therapies Department. He studied at the University of the West Indies and then went on to work at the University Hospital of The West Indies for over 3 years before relocating to London in 2013.
During his time at St George’s Clayton was given the opportunity to develop and grow the Home Therapies Department which enables patients who choose to be dialysed at home to live a more independent lifestyle. Clayton was tasked with educating, supporting and training renal patients in the community whilst empowering them with the knowledge of how to sustain an independent lifestyle whilst on dialysis. He was recently awarded the Silver Chief Nursing Officer Award medal for his success in this role which has helped to reduce hospital stay for renal patients and has provided greater flexibility for training needs in Home Therapies. The Chief Nursing award is a national initiative designed to reward the significant and outstanding contribution made by Nurses in England. Clayton was praised in the award entry for 'delivering excellent innovative care' and for being the 'epitome of what a role model should be for patient centred care'.
Outside of work, Clayton is a keen photographer. You can enjoy some of his work on on Instagram: @allurepixels https://www.instagram.com/allurepixels/

Episode 8: The US electoral system
OhemaaTalks Podcast
09/02/20 • 57 min
At a young age Elaine immigrated from Ghana to the United States. She immediately fell in love with the country as she experienced the beautiful scenery, observed the diverse people, and admired the numerous opportunities. Her family had a great start to life in the U.S. when they were blessed with subsidized housing in what was considered a “good” school district.
After receiving a college degree in political science and economics, Elaine went on to marry her best friend, Keenan Nietmann. They started a family soon after and relocated from Maryland to Georgia in her last year of law school in 2011. Elaine settled in Georgia as a wife, mother, and lawyer, and when her second born son was diagnosed with autism, she witnessed firsthand the shortcomings of the healthcare system and special education federal programs in addressing his needs. To make matters worse, the private sector referrals were often expensive, contained long waiting lists, and had short day schedules that were not conducive to the schedules of most full or part-time working parents.
Elaine's experience with advocating for her son with special needs, while working as a public defender, guardian ad litem, and family law attorney in GA's Congressional District 4; motivated her to run for the U.S. Congress in Georgia’s 4th Congressional District in June, 2020.
Elaine credits her Christian faith to her ability to handle and successfully balance the duties of her law practice and family of six while still advocating for her son’s special needs. Living by the words of her parents, Elaine believes that the goal of hard work will never be lost when you give it everything you’ve got!
