Off Screen Death

Michael Denniston and David Giannini

Star filled black icon

(1)

A podcast about all the things we must do before the inevitable. Mostly watching movies. However one host intends to use that time wisely by looking at respected lists of curation from the likes of Sight And Sound or the AFI's Top 100. Meanwhile the other watches a lot of STARZ. Really. An unreasonable amount of STARZ. And yet he heroically finds the time to podcast. Before he dies. This is OFF SCREEN DEATH. Hosted by Michael Denniston and David Giannini. Artwork by Nathan Thomas Milliner. Music by Joplin Rice.

Off Screen Death - Last Night in Soho/Repulsion (1001 Movies #462)
play

11/01/21 • 30 min

"Were we supposed to have found it entertaining? There's more horror latent in this notion of the movie audience than in the film itself."

And if Pauline Kael's unkind words about Roman Polanski's REPULSION don't do it for you... how about Father Time Rex Reed for LAST NIGHT IN SOHO?

“Depraved, delirious, and downright stupid, Last Night in Soho is two hours of amateurish drivel by B-movie director Edgar Wright that pretends to be half-retro Swingin’ Sixties comedy and half-horror thriller. It is neither, but for a two hour assault on the I.Q., it’s in a class by itself”

We also have some words, but you get to listen. No reading necessary at Off Screen Death (except here.)

Mike and Dave discuss the need (or lack thereof) for plot, the trials and tribulations of the beautiful, and a recommendation for heavy drinking for one of these films. As is our want, we focus more on REPULSION, which is probably for the best.

Join as we determine if we should root for movies with no plot, or those with so much plot that we struggle to track and pay attention. One thing we know for sure is, anything is better than another long Marvel nonsense movie, no matter who the director might be.

Off Screen Death - Marie Antoinette (Sofia Coppola #3)

To create... one must syndicate.

At our advanced age (when we are not falling asleep or contemplating our own mortality) we can look back with reverence (bitterness) at our misspent youth. What that means for you, dear listener, is a plan of action that requires a couple of months of inaction.

Episodes looking back at the films of Sofia Coppola... which also is a look back at our previous podcast A PODCAST DIRECTED BY. However... not only will we revisit those episodes but also the work that this director has since completed with ON THE ROCKS and the new release PRISCILLA. This will give us time to start recording our lists for 2024 which involve the years 1939, 1974, 1994 and 1999. It's going to be good. Maybe. Enjoy and have a happy Thanksgiving!

Off Screen Death - The Verdict (AFI #75 100 Years... 100 Cheers)
play

David Mamet sure knows how to write an ending...

... even if they don't really use it. But, BUT... there is one of the greatest final speeches in the history of film and that is why one host picked this as his first selection in the Sight & Sound Was Wrong draft.

Even though he didn't know it yet.

For he hadn't seen the movie.

And his co-host had.

But he didn't trust him,

Naturally.

Put your trust in Paul Newman's greatest performance as he boozes, has one-sided fisticuffs with Charlotte Rampling and impresses a young Bruce Willis in THE VERDICT!

Off Screen Death - On the Rocks and Priscilla (Sofia Coppola #7 and #8)
play

02/21/24 • 43 min

A Podcast Directed By... The Reunion.

Getting the band back together... or at least the old band name (The One-ders?) as we present a NEW Sofia Coppola episode as thankfully she kept making movies after getting the career push she needed on our old podcast A PODCAST DIRECTED BY. We talk mainly ON THE ROCKS and a little bit about the icky-ness of PRISCILLA before one host attacks Martin Scorsese and defends women while the other sits on his hands. Enjoy!

A Trailer for Death Off Screen

As if 2020 wasn't bad enough here's a podcast from Michael Denniston and David Giannini contemplating how they are spending their time on earth and here's the worst part:

It's recording yet another film podcast.

But along the way they watch a bunch of movies although their starting points may be different. One man is a snob that nobody loves as he punishes himself for not having all of the Criterion Collection and hopes to one day see all of the 1001 movies that need to be seen before... well, you know.

Your other host is named Mike and everyone loves him because he has a subscription to STARZ. Welcome to OFF SCREEN DEATH.

Off Screen Death - Grumpier Old Men (RT 17%)
play

10/19/22 • 37 min

"This is, of course, a big-screen sitcom, and in fact I would love to see this material transplanted to the TV screen, where it belongs."

We use the words of the great Roger Ebert against him as a discussion on GRUMPIER OLD MEN leads into the effect of seeing something like DUNE on one's television at home. This has nothing to do with the fact that this episode is a year late NOR that perhaps technical difficulties delayed our recording of ANOTHER GREAT SEX COMEDY... 2014's SEX TAPE.

And yes, we here at OFF SCREEN DEATH consider the maligned sequel to GRUMPY OLD MEN a sex comedy. Because Sophia Loren. Enjoy!

Off Screen Death - Sophie's Choice (Sophie's 1 of 2)
play

05/25/22 • 36 min

"SOPHIE'S CHOICE is a rare film, literate, deeply moving, and gifted with an absolutely awe-inspire it performance by Meryl Streep."

Bob Thomas of the Associated Press really comes out swinging and he should probably calm down. We all agree that Meryl is great, but the rest of the movie... not so much.

"The way Streep inhabits Sophie, and brings her history to life whether she's explicitly talking about the past or carrying herself across the room with wounded grace, can't help but make parts of the rest of the film seem smaller by comparison."

There it is, Keith Phipps of The Dissolve. We have decided Streep is good, that it just might make the movie worse. Stingo, Stinko, whatever your name is, you have no business talking to this woman at all.

Mike and Dave talk accents, manslaughter charges, and if this movie would even get made in the days of Film Twitter (the answer, as always, is no.) Oh, also we talk about Debra Winger A LOT.
