We also hear about her incredible work with Daughters of the Deep - an organisation giving young women with a passion for the ocean to help connect, protect and have a career with our oceans. Local action on plastic pollution with Dr Kathy Willis

Dr Kathy Willis is a Fulbright Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Washington and CSIRO Scientific Researcher on a mission to combat plastic pollution and reframe plastic as a valuable commodity rather than a throwaway item. In Kathy's second appearance on the pod, we discuss the recent good news about plastic pollution on Australian beaches, spatial and temporal trends in plastic washing up on beaches along the US Pacific Northwest, citizen science, 'biofoul' on marine debris, and community-led informal waste management programs.

This episode is the second of a four-part series of recorded audio from the Ocean Plastic Action Forum at Bondi Beach – held on 15th March 2023, as part of the Volvo Ocean Lovers Festival. Snakes as a bioindicator of wetland pollution with Damian Lettoof (Part 1 of 2)

We kick off season 3 of the Ocean Protect Podcast with Damian Lettoof - a PhD Candidate at Curtin University in Perth, Western Australia. Damien has been catching and analysing wild wetland tiger snakes around Perth as part of his PhD research. His analysis shows metal contamination in these snakes is chronic, and highest in human-disturbed wetlands, suggesting all other plants and animals in these wetlands are likely contaminated as well. We talk about the research, along with a few tips on how best to leave the snake encounters to Damian.
