Perinatal Physio, Kirsty Nel
Nurture Pod

Join myself and Kirsty as we discuss what to expect during pregnancy and postpartum physiotherapy. In this transformative life phase, it is not uncommon for new parents to feel mislead or poorly informed about their pelvic health concerns, not knowing if symptoms are ‘normal’ or where to turn... you may find yourself asking “why did no one tell me”. We discuss the transitional phase that we are all in today, as we move away from a period of shame and a lack of insight toward feeling empowered, informed and confident to advocate for ones needs.
“I am a physiotherapist and I qualified in 2006. In 2012 I completed my women's health special interest modules via the SAPS in Cape Town. I did both the written and piratical exam as well as the case study. In 2015 I went to London do complete my foundation courses in Western Medical Acupuncture. When I returned I worked for and was mentored by Phyllis Berger in pain management and infertility acupuncture.
In 2019 I opened my own practice and spread my wings into full on womens' health focused treatments. This coincided with me falling pregnant unexpectedly. My little one was born in January 2020 and shortly after that COVID hit us. I had to adapt how I could treat and consult with patients so I developed my instagram page and webinar series which has just gone from strength to strength.
My practice focuses on female pelvic floor pathology which include pregnancy and postpartum management as well as infertility and endometriosis treatments.
Seeing a gap in awareness and and info for moms and women in general I a launching an online platform called & Her Women’s Wellness. This site aims to be a space to empower and support women in various stages of life and health with information, products and material to help their specific needs.
The first product are almost ready to launch so we will hopefully be live by the end of the year.

Chemsex, Aoife Drury

Drug use is a difficult and controversial topic, increasingly so, when we consider it in the light of intimate engagements. Two taboos collide. You will notice my careful choice of words, hesitancy and curiosity in exploring this topic. Aoife enlightens us as she explains the details of “chemsex”, pleasure / pain balance, communication strategies,
Although controversial, we encourage open-mindedness and a willingness to learn as its through knowledge that we can best serve not only patients but ALL those around us.
Todays Guest:
Aoife qualified as a Psychiatric Nurse in Ireland before relocating to London to carry out an MSc. Aoife later commenced in Regents University studying Psychotherapy and then subsequently completed a diploma in Psychosexual and Relationship Therapy. Following a diploma in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Aoife began a Doctorate in Psychotherapy at Dublin City University. Now in her 2nd year, her research interests are firmly in the area of Chemsex with a particular focus on how clients with 'problematic' use can be better supported. Aoife is an accredited psychosexual and relationship therapist working in private practice in Dublin connecting with clients globally online.

Additional info re. PAP vs HPV screening.
”The new cervical screening test procedure is similar to a Pap smear test. For both tests a doctor or nurse takes a sample of cells from the cervix. However, the Pap smear test used to look for abnormal cells in the cervix, while the cervical screening test looks for HPV infection. The new test for HPV can identify women who could be at risk of cervical cancer earlier than the Pap test could.”

Low Libido, Candice Langford

“Low Libido”, Candice Langford
As a pelvic physio working with individuals with painful penetration, the topic of ‘low libido’ comes up a lot. So here are a few foundations that I have found to be helpful in exploring ‘what to do’ about ‘low libido’.
“Low libido” or as you will learn “FSIAD” is a common and juicy topic!
We cover a lot;
Human S. Response Cycles, Arousal NON-CONCORDANCE, DUEL CONTROL MODEL, Responsive Desire...
As well as TOOLS for you to explore!
But this is still just the tip of the iceberg, it’s an interconnected topic with many factors weighing into your experience of altered desire and arousal!
Note; research populations are changing to become more inclusive. If you hear me saying ‘female’ in relation to a study - it is relating to the parameters set in that study. We can assume that the individuals included, identified as ‘female’.
In addition to this, most research is based on heterosexual relationships. This too is changing to include different relationship structures & preferences.

Postpartum painful sex, Candice Langford
Nurture Pod

Postpartum Dyspareunia
With up to 40% of individuals experiencing dyspareunia at the 2 month mark, this is a conversation that we need to nurture, especially since symptoms can and should be treated. In this episode I speak about 3 common contributors to pain with penetration in the postpartum period, how they may present and potential treatment options. My hope is to reduce stigma and fear through information sharing and improve comfort and confidence when communicating about this topic, whether that’s with a partner, friend or health care provider.

Vaginismus Medical Management, Dr. Allyson Shrikhande
In todays episode, Dr. Allyson Shrikhande from @pelvicrehabilitation shares generously about a medical management approach to treating patients with GPPPD, namely vaginismus.
We highlight that vaginismus treatment is not one dimensional, and that patients typically engage with a multidisciplinary team (not limited to physiotherapy, psychology and medical doctors). Dr. Shrikhande details the medical facet of treatment utilised by the Pelvic Rehabilitation Medicine team.
Todays Guest:
Dr. Allyson Shrikhande, a board certified Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation specialist, is the Chief Medical Officer of Pelvic Rehabilitation Medicine.
She is also the Chair of the Medical Education Committee for the International Pelvic Pain Society. She works with other experts in the field of chronic pelvic pain to develop training modules for residents and physicians interested in learning about the diagnosis, treatment, and management of chronic pelvic pain.
Dr. Shrikhande is passionate about this cause and dedicated to helping men and women with pelvic pain who often suffer without anyone willing to listen, understand or find the cause of their pain.
With an extensive background in mainstream clinical medicine, she also makes use of many alternatives, holistic and homeopathic approaches. She has published peer-reviewed articles on the treatment of muscle pain in academic journals and works closely with renowned pelvic pain gynecologists and urologists.
Taking a team approach, she works with specialists in pelvic floor physical therapy, kinetics and movement, as well as acupuncturists, nutritionists, cognitive behavioral therapists and functional medicine physicians.
