A Very Vintage Halloween: The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920), Häxan (1922), & The Curse of the Cat People (1944)
Not Your Final Girl
10/31/22 • 80 min
Happy Halloween, girls and ghouls and freaks! Candace and Ariel have been churning the midnight butter, as the saying goes, and working to bring you our third annual Vintage Halloween. This year we’re showing love to pre 1970’s horror with artist, musician, and sound wizard Pat Spurlock (aka Phantom Stranger, the Boogeyman, our technical and emotional support, etc) about German expressionist classic The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920), early documentary and horror Bible Häxan (1922), and lovably strange sequel to Cat People, The Curse of the Cat People (1944).
A fantastic triple feature (though we don’t recommend actually watching all these movies in a row, if only because of the eye strain), thoughtful, dreamlike or nightmarelike, depending on who you ask, visually striking in many varied ways, and deeply interested in the workings of the human mind. Plus there’s a freaky little devil guy who’s celebrating his 100 year anniversary of freaking people out. Do it for him!
Our guest, Pat Spurlock, is the pod’s number one supporter and friend, but he’s also got a ton of his own stuff going on. You can check out his record store here; his record label, Phantom Stranger Records, here, and here; and artwork here.

Down the Rabbit Hole: The Empty Man (2020) & Broadcast Signal Intrusion (2021) w/ Andrew Jara
Not Your Final Girl
05/30/23 • 79 min
This one goes all the way to the top... or does it? Candace and Ariel are joined by filmmaker and fellow podcaster Andrew Jara to talk about (suspiciously?) underwatched mind bending conspiracy moves – creepypasta/urban legend-inspired thriller The Empty Man (2020), and the atmospheric and noir-ish Broadcast Signal Intrusion (2021)
Our connection was a little spotty during this recording, so please forgive us if we accidentally a word or sentence here or there. Also, please be warned, we do address sexual assault and suicide in our discussion, though these topics aren’t directly portrayed in either film.
Check out our guest Andrew’s podcast, The Bomb Squad as well as his new film, The Empty Space, out May 30th.

Nasty Girls: Egomaniac (2016) & Censor (2021) w/ Alison Peirse
Not Your Final Girl
12/18/21 • 89 min
Welcome to our final episode of 2021! We’re leaving this year with a bang, ghouls. Candace and Ariel are joined by writer Alison Peirse for our most British double feature ever: Kate Shenton’s independent dark meta horror comedy about the nightmares of filmmaking, Egomaniac (2016), and Prano Bailey-Bond’s fever dream of art, unresolved trauma, and video nasties, Censor (2021).
This is one of those film pairings that seem to have nothing in common until you watch them together, otherwise known as our favorite kind. If you love to see a sympathetic (if not necessarily relatable) character struggle to force the world into the shape she wants it to be, the dark recesses of the inner mind explored, corpses arranged into little tableaus, and/or descents into madness, look no further. We also talk about Tim Curry playing a terrifying demon creature in Legend (1985), so if you don’t like any of the aforementioned things, at least stay for that.
Alison Peirse is a multi-award-winning horror writer and Associate Professor of Film. Her latest book is Women Make Horror: Filmmaking, Feminism, Genre. She also runs a horror film newsletter, The Losers' Club, which she thinks you might like.

Trust Exorcise: Let's Scare Jessica to Death (1971) & The Exorcist III (1990) w/ Jessica Scott
Not Your Final Girl
05/08/22 • 75 min
We’re back, and talking to film critic and cosplayer Jessica Scott, who brought us two underrated and under-discussed bangers: John Hancock’s ethereal and unsettling Let’s Scare Jessica To Death (1971), and William Peter Blatty’s chaotic long lost successor to The Exorcist, The Exorcist III (1990 - and yes, The Exorcist II exists, but for our purposes, no it doesn’t).
You might wonder what these movies have in common for a double feature, and we’re here to tell you: actually a lot! Both were developed to diverge heavily from their source material (we’re dying to read the original It Drinks Hippie Blood almost as bad as we are to see the director’s cut of The Exorcist III), both use naturalistic relationships to drive the horror, both feature fantastic voice work and dream/nightmare logic, both were ignored by Roger Ebert, and of course, Zohra Lampert - who if you’re not familiar with as a performer, you’re about to be.
What these don’t have in common, in no particular order: 70’s pesticide horror, Weird Little Guy Things, creepy car-handle holding, the Catholic Joker, fear of free love, “a lesbian flick,” and Fabio.
Jessica Scott is an entertainment critic and culture writer who focuses primarily on feminist issues, mental health representation, and queer issues in the horror genre. You can follow her on Twitter @wewhowalkhere.

Not Your Final Girl

It's time to join Candace and Ariel for another smoke break in the back room as we give our spoiler-free thoughts on Joe Hill's short story brought chillingly to life by Scott Derrickson: The Black Phone! We loved this fun summer blockbuster dark nostalgia romp and think you might too. Catch it in a theater near you!

Trio of Terror: A Rob Zombie Retrospective w/ Pat Spurlock
Not Your Final Girl
10/16/23 • 116 min
Content note: Multiple of our films today include sexual violence and this episode contains discussion of that.
We’re back! Just in time for The Season, Candace and Ariel are joined by regular guest, technical and emotional support, and Rob Zombie fanboy Pat Spurlock to talk about horror’s favorite wife guy — specifically House of 1000 Corpses (2003), The Devil’s Rejects (2005), and perhaps his most challenging, The Lords of Salem (2012).
Ghouls and Wikipedia summary readers, if you haven’t given Rob Zombie a proper chance, this is your sign! If this one doesn’t get you, we’ll be back with another Halloween episode soon, so stick around.

Birds from the Crypt w/ Carla Barrientos
Not Your Final Girl
03/29/21 • 94 min
It’s wall-to-wall Thrills, Chills, and Spills in this episode. And about a million crazy birds. Ariel and Candace are talking to Hello Bakersfield host Carla Barrientos about a couple of good ol spook shows: Hitchcock’s classic The Birds, and EC Comics adaptation (and forerunner to the TV show that scared the shit out of Candace as a kid) Tales From the Crypt.
Pull up a sarcophagus and turn on some ominous organ music, cause we’ve got prank addictions, hetero hijinks, literal poetic justice, a killer Santa (and no other mention of Christmas?), and a crypt keeper who isn’t gleeful about sentencing the damned to eternal torture. And if sometimes the characters behave as if they’ve never seen a horror movie? Give them a break, okay? It was a different time.
Carla Barrientos, a Bakersfield native, is a co-host on the Hello Bakersfield podcast, a podcast that explores the dynamic people, places and culture of Bakersfield, California. She also specializes in child behavior management and special needs. She enjoys watching horror films with her husband (after her 2 year old son has gone to bed, as she's planning on getting him in on the fun once he's a little older).
Movies Discussed: The Birds (1963), Tales From the Crypt (1972)

Terror Tables: The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974) & The Loved Ones (2009) w/ Gretchen Felker-Martin
Not Your Final Girl
04/11/22 • 98 min
Listeners, we call you all ghouls for a reason, and we’re putting it to the test (again) in this episode. Get ready to consider your cosmic insignificance, the razor-thin divide between humans and livestock, and the intimate cruelties of family because we’re talking to author and film critic Gretchen Felker-Martin about torture porn grandaddy The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974), and its unexpected but brilliantly rancid relative The Loved Ones (2009).
If it was not clear from the previous paragraph, this double feature is not for the faint of heart or weak of stomach! If that’s you, then you could always listen to us talk about it, and get an excellent book recommendation for your trouble, as well as musings on the worst possible party soundtrack, rare femcel representation, the nasty little details that make you squirm more than outright gore, and the mysteries of Roger Ebert’s mind. Did we mention the book rec? Check out Manhunt wherever you get your books and thank us later.
Gretchen Felker-Martin is a Massachusetts-based horror writer and film critic writing about the abject, the grotesque, and the sensual. You can follow her work on Twitter @scumbelievable and on Patreon under her own name.

Hey girls, did you know? That uhm... ghouls just wanna have fun. And okay, it’s not actually October yet, but Candace and Ariel are exploding from their graves early to come at you with a trick-or-treat core musical monster bash double feature: chaotic made-for-tv movie The Midnight Hour (1985) and iconic “longstanding social phenomenon” (thanks for this analysis, Ebert) The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975).
What’s the difference between a “two-hour made-for-TV movie... billed as a humorous horror romp” and “a campy monster bash in which revived corpses break into song and dance?” Is Sandy from Grease spending eternity in hell? Is stealing from a museum okay if the stuff technically belonged to your great grandparents? What is it about watching Rocky Horror at midnight that drove people to obsession, and united the east and west coasts? What entity possessed Tim Curry to give the performance of a generation? Come dive into the coffin full of popcorn that is this episode, and find out for yourself.
Most importantly, hit us up and tell us your fun, pre trick-or-treating vibes Halloween watches! And who are your horror blorbos, if you’re not too shy to reveal them.
