"Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity." - Hanlon's Razor

Tora! Tora! Tora! is a 1970 movie about the Japanese air raid on Pearl Harbor, and the series of American blunders that aggravated its effectiveness. Tora! Tora! Tora! has been possibly the most accurate portrayal of the attack at Pearl Harbor that our War on Film crew has viewed so far. By presenting both an American perspective and a Japanese one there is much to discuss. Join us for Not a Robot's War on Film!

Today we honor Navy Ensign Herbert C. Jones who was on board the US California during the Pearl Harbor attack. Herbert was helping load manual ammunition when an explosion severely injured him and trapped his fellow shipmates. Orders were then given to abandon ship. Unable to flee he demanded they leave him there while they saved themselves. In March 1942, Jones posthumously received the Medal of Honor for his bravery and sacrifice.

play

11/10/21 • 53 min

Set-bound in the trenches of WW1, The Trench was a 1999 movie starring Daniel Craig. This mediocre movie depicted a mediocre story about a group of soldiers and their last days before the battle of the Somme in 1916. Regardless of a few cinematic snafus the War on Film Podcast team truly enjoyed talking about this film and we know you will enjoy listening!

****

My Boy Jack

written in 1916

by Rudyard Kipling

"Have you news of my boy Jack?”

Not this tide.

"When d'you think that he'll come back?"

Not with this wind blowing, and this tide.

"Has any one else had word of him?"

Not this tide.

For what is sunk will hardly swim,

Not with this wind blowing, and this tide.

"Oh, dear, what comfort can I find?"

None this tide,

Nor any tide,

Except he did not shame his kind—

Not even with that wind blowing, and that tide.

Then hold your head up all the more,

This tide,

And every tide;

Because he was the son you bore,

And gave to that wind blowing and that tide!

Not A Robot's War on Film - Ep 32: Not A Robot's War on Film - Journey's End, 2017
play

11/18/21 • 79 min

Today we review the 2017 movie Journey's End, a movie that undeniably sparked emotion. Usually an optimistic bunch, soldiers often think that they will survive the wars in which they fight.

In this film, our main characters move closer to their demis with every tick of their pocket watch and they must decide how to spend their days. Some continue with their duties, as usual, others turn to drink, while others fill in the silence between shelling with all manners of coping. Does any of it even matter when the journey ends?

Today we honor four-star General Colin Luther Powell who was born on April 5th, 1937, and died October 18, 2021. Colin Powel was a veteran of the Vietnam war a statesman, a diplomat, and as 65th in line, he was the first black man to serve as the United States Secretary. He was a true patriot and a great example of selfless service.
