When Meggie Palmer was working as a journalist several years ago, she found out that her male counterparts were making significantly more than she was, and approached HR to inquire about the difference. She was told she had two choices: quit her job if she was unhappy, or hire a lawyer. So she hired a lawyer. Though Meggie’s since pivoted from her career in journalism, she’s still passionate about leveling the playing field for women across industries, helping them push for equality.
In today’s episode, our Founder & CEO Dave Fano chats with Meggie—now the Founder & CEO of PepTalkHer—about how she found her calling in coaching women to be more confident in the workplace. Listen as they dive into:
- Meggie’s first job as a local news reporter near the Great Barrier Reef in Australia and how it set her up for a career in journalism.
- Seasons of your career, and how it can ebb and flow over time to align with your needs.
- How Meggie pivoted from being a successful journalist to creating PepTalkHer, a company that supports and empowers more than 60,000 women globally and helps them advocate for raises and promotions.

From schooling in Vermont to becoming a travel coordinator, to then working as a career services specialist, follow along as Jennifer recounts the fascinating story of her life up to the point where she is now: the Director of Career Innovation with Nexford University, as well as a consultant for the Future of Learning Fund in Africa.

In this episode of Career Paths with Teal, Dave Fano chats with Jason Shah, Product Lead at Airbnb. Jason began his career by launching his own company at just 15 years old, but has a surprising bit of advice for anyone with an entrepreneurial spirit: don't be afraid to work for someone else. Reflecting on his own career path, which includes years spent at companies like Microsoft and Amazon, he says it is important to treat a career like a road map, rather than a ladder you're looking to climb. Jason addresses corporate culture while stressing the importance of accountability and shared goals.

Amanda Natividad, now the VP of Marketing at SparkToro, has always been a content creator of some kind, whether that meant writing short stories in kindergarten or setting out to be a journalist. After graduating from UCLA, Amanda’s career took an unexpected pivot in her mid-20s: she chose to attend culinary school—which then led her to become a test-kitchen cook and, ultimately, a content marketer. In this episode, Amanda opens up about feeling like college wasn’t for her at first; the quarter-life crisis that so many people struggle with; how to find work that’s energizing; how she leveraged her transferable skills to job search through cold outreach to companies; and how rejection really can be redirection.

Paris native Rachel Gogel has a deep passion to use her voice to help create close-knit, inclusive communities, especially for women and the queer community. After her very first design class at the University of Pennsylvania, Rachel knew that she was where she needed to be and declared her major in design. Post-college, she took internships until she made her way into design work that kept her afloat and broadened her horizons. Not long after, she was given the opportunity to be the manager of the marketing art department of GQ at only 22 years old. Her next few years were a whirlwind, as she also worked with the New York Times and Facebook and transitioned from design to the tech world; she later started working as a design manager in a small design studio called Godfrey Dadich Partners. Presently, she is doing freelance work with clients, most notably American Express and Airbnb. Follow along with Rachel’s story from her small beginnings in design creating the yearbook in high school to one day helping build multidisciplinary teams at the New York Times, GQ Magazine, Facebook (now Meta), and more.

Dayle Zielentino, Managing Director at Penny Deer, grew up in Newcastle, UK, intending to be an architect, but after graduating at the tail end of a recession, doubled down on his technical skills to land a job and found himself moving away from the future he'd imagined. From a transformational move to London to a series of career pivots that led him to where he is now in real estate development, Dayle's tapped into the power of networking (both in-person and virtually through Twitter), the growth that happens when you aren't afraid to ask questions and admit what you don't know, and the knowledge that it's never too late to switch gears.

Jeff Rinehart, now a partner at venture capital impact firm City Light Capital, is a self-proclaimed linear thinker with a nonlinear career. From his 11-year tenure at Capital One, where he started as a statistician and ultimately oversaw the company's marketing strategy for the U.S. consumer credit card function. He then went on to join early-stage ed technology startup 2U as their chief marketing officer, and, two years after taking the company public, became a full-time professor at American University's business school. From there, he started advising companies and angel investing, which led him to City Light Capital—the lead investor on Teal's recent $6.3 million round of funding.
In this episode, Jeff touches on overcoming impostor syndrome, the power of lateral moves, how his background as a drummer led him to study economics, and why he's always been drawn to opportunities that challenge him and force him to grow.
