EP 195 Part 4/6: 60 Ways to Respond to Your Kids without Losing Your Cool
No-Problem Parenting
11/09/23 • 24 min
Welcome back to the No Problem Parenting podcast, where we turn behavior problems into no problems! I'm your host, Jaci Finneman. Today, we're delving into responses #31-40 of the 60 ways to respond to your kids without losing your cool.
Parenting is no cakewalk, and we all face challenging moments. The key is maintaining a positive relationship while addressing these situations. Remember, you're not alone in this journey. It's natural to feel upset at times, but how you respond makes all the difference.
Dealing with Unwanted Behaviors: Kids can be defiant, meltdown, yell, or cry for various reasons. But what if we approached these situations with preparation rather than dread? Our responses can either escalate or de-escalate the situation, influencing the frequency of repeated behaviors.
No-Problem ParentsTM Approach: No-Problem ParentsTM give behavior problems only as much attention as they deserve. It's about responding as a leader who understands the child's emotions without getting entangled in the battle. The goal is to be empathetic, firm, and confident without letting every behavior affect the parent-child relationship.
Empathy and Understanding: These 60 responses are designed to be shared in a matter-of-fact, empathetic way. The aim is to respond as a parent who understands the child's struggles, venting, or sadness. There's no need for sarcasm, criticism, or convincing tones.
Handling Your Own Emotions: Parenting can be emotionally challenging, and it's okay to feel upset sometimes. The key is modeling appropriate behavior even when upset. The responses provide tools for expressing your emotions without hurting others or losing control.
In today's episode, we're covering responses #31-40. To access the full list of 60 responses, visit noproblemparents.com, enter your name and email, and we'll send the PDF to your inbox.
This episode is brought to you by Dr. J.J. Kelly and The Get Real Program your guide to navigating the challenges of parenting teens and young adults.
Parenting is a journey with its ups and downs. These responses are your tools to handle challenging moments while maintaining a positive relationship with your child. Remember, you've got this!

Part 3/6 - Today Jaci shares #21-30 of the 60 Ways to Respond to your kids without losing your cool.
Dealing with children's unwanted behavior can be challenging, and it's important to maintain a calm and empathetic approach. These responses can be used for children of all ages, even infants. We'll explore how to respond when your infant or toddler is upset, refusing diaper changes, or resisting being buckled into the car seat to Kids and teens who are talking back or disrespecting you.
When kids are defiant, melting down, yelling at you, or crying because they are upset, want to do something they cannot do, or aren’t doing something you’ve asked them to do, it can be inconvenient, embarrassing, and exhausting.
Does it really have to be? What if instead of dreading the defiance we are prepared to respond to it? Just because our kids get upset or reactive doesn’t mean we need to join them. We can observe the behavior as simply that! A behavior. And behaviors pass unless we feed them by giving them too much attention which often causes the child to repeat the behavior.
How we respond to our child’s behaviors can make or break our relationship with them and determine how often the child will repeat the same unwanted behavior.
No-Problem ParentsTM give behavior problems only as much attention as they deserve and then life goes on. There is no need to take every behavior personally and in fact, when parents do take every behavior personally, we are unintentionally teaching kids that their behavior controls the health of our relationship with them. In other words, if they are behaving well, we feel better about ourselves, and our worth as a parent feels good. When our children are not behaving well, we feel responsible and often embarrassed which can cause anger and resentment or feelings of hopelessness and defeat.
These 60 responses are intended to be shared in a matter-of-fact yet empathetic way without sarcasm, criticism, anger, or convincing tones.
Let's learn how to be empathetic leaders in our children's lives without losing control.

Navigating High-Conflict Co-Parenting: Ensuring Stability for Children with Diane Dierks and Rick Voyles EP 269
No-Problem Parenting
03/14/24 • 36 min
Welcome Back No-Problem Parents!
Today's guests, Diane Dierks and Rick Voyles, co-hosts of the Co-Parent Dilemmas podcast, are experts in navigating the complexities of co-parenting, especially in high-conflict situations.
In each episode, they address pressing questions such as:
What do you do when the other parent won't be flexible with the parenting schedule?
How do you respond to a co-parent who is constantly blowing up your phone with texts?
Is it really important to talk to your children when they are at the other parent's house?
And what about the parent who won't share important information with you about the children?
Do you give in to the other parent's antics or should you hold your ground?
There are at least two sides to every conflict, and when it's between divorced or separated parents, sparks can fly. Diane and Rick offer valuable insights into the benefits and risks of Letting Go vs. Holding On to the conflict in a variety of complex topics facing co-parents today.
DIANE DIERKS is a licensed marriage and family therapist, as well as the executive director of the Center for Navigating Family Change (www.CNFC.org), a non-profit that provides court-ordered parenting education and co-parenting services to the state of Georgia. She has been a parenting coordinator and reunification therapist for many years and provides consultation and expert witness services in high-conflict custody matters.
RICK VOYLES is CEO of the Center for Dispute Solutions, as well as a certified business coach, an anger management specialist, and a professional mediator. Rick travels internationally, training and developing federal mediators in their agency ADR programs. He is a published author, business coach, and entrepreneur. He has developed an online Mediation Training including over 17 video presentations. He has also produced a TV program, “Conflict, Mediation and You” where he discusses topics in conflict management, as well as mediation techniques. Rick is a subject matter expert in the areas of Divorce, Co-parenting, Negotiation, Cross-cultural Communication, and Conflict Resolution. He frequently teaches court-ordered co-parenting seminars and is a trained parenting coordinator.

Podcast Q&A
Why did you start this show?
Supporting and advocating for parents in the real-life challenges of raising kids is my jam. When we support parents, we support kids and I believe confident parents raise confident, capable kids. The show shares products, services and resources that help parents become the confident leader our kids crave us to be. We can turn any 'problem' into a No-Problem with the right support.
What do you hope listeners gain from listening to your show?
Confidence in their parenting. We don't know what we don't know until we know! Is your child sick often? Do they melt down frequently? Lie a lot? Are they isolating and not talking to you or anyone for that matter? Is your child rejecting your love and direction? Are they struggling in school or with friendships? You know something is not right with your child or relationship and you think you have tried everything? My goal is that listeners will find answers to these questions and more.
Which episode should someone start with?
If you are interested in why I left a 20 year career in Mental Health to start my company and how my 8 yr old son made it captain obvious that I was being called to support parents, then listen to EP 32 If you are interested in why I am so driven to support parents, then listen to EP 4
Which have been your favourite episodes so far?
Oh my! WIth almost 300 episodes that is hard to choose! Most recent I would say my 3 Part series with Jim Poole of NuCalm, 3 part series with Melissa Deally of Your Guided Health Journey and Dr JJ Kellys 3 part series on emotional intelligence. I also love my 60 ways to respond to your kids without losing your cool. Six episodes where I share 10 responses in each episode.
Which episode are you most proud of?
My solo episodes. While the sound quality isn't great in the earlier episodes before I bought a good mic, the content is a game changer for many of my clients and listeners. You can find them on my website under the podcast tab. www.noproblemparents.com
What is your vision for your show?
I'm building a parenting resource hub akin to an 'Angie's List,' focused on supporting parents' mental health and wellness, along with resources for kids from infants to young adults. The aim is to develop a podcast website featuring categorized listings of resources, with direct links to both free and paid options.
What is your favourite other podcast that isn't yours?
I have a few podcasting favs like Grow the Show, Podcasting Made Simple, Stefanie Gass, Podcast Marketing Trends and Entrpreneurs on Fire. I also love Her Home & Heart, Coast to the Heart, The Language of Play, The Empowered Step Mom, and The Newsworthy. There are many many more!
How did you come up with the name for your podcast?
In 2018 I realized that most parents were giving too much attention to the 'problem'. In the definition of the word problem, it says; A matter or situation that is unwelcome or harmful and needing to be dealt with and overcome. Catch that? Dealt with and overcome! No Problem Parenting supports parents in dealing with and overcoming problems rather than feeding the problem or creating more problems. The No Problem Parenting Podcast deals with and overcomes problems one episode at a time.
Tell us a bit about yourself
My hubby Eric and I have been together 30+ years and live in Central MN. We are the grateful parents of a grown son, two Angel babies, and a loyal 9 year old doodle. I am also 1 of 100 first cousins and love dirt.
