In this episode of NL Playoffs, hosts Aniketh and Gowtham are joined by Newslaundry’s Anand Vardhan to pay tribute to Shane Warne, the ‘king of spin’.

They talk about Warne’s debut, the ball of the century, his mentor Terry Jenner, his most memorable spells, 700th wicket, the controversies around him, and more. They also discuss the encounters between Tendulkar and Warne. Anand says Warne had already been neutralised by openers before facing Tendulkar. “He didn't carry his greatness too seriously and he wore it very lightly on his shoulders and that gave him a box-office element.”

As the conversation moves to Warne’s controversies, Aniketh says that “no one is black or white. Everyone here has aspects of life...and once you become a public figure, these things come out.” Aniketh mentions that he envied Adam Gilchrist’s position just because he had the best seat in the house to see Warne bowl. Gowtham adds that Warne never shirked or moved away from any challenge.

When they speak about the ball of the century and Mike Gatting’s dismissal, Anand says, “How good a ball looks ultimately depends on how badly it was played.”

The episode ends with their favourite king of spin moments, and Warne’s favourite Bruce Springsteen song Thunder Road.
