Mark Davies: Drogheda Night-time Economy Adviser
Nighttime Economy
02/23/24 • 31 min
Something remarkable is underway in the Republic of Ireland. Its government has prioritized and elevated the value of that country’s nighttime economy in enviable ways.
Government leaders have determined that the country’s cities and towns, of all sizes, not to mention Irish culture itself, will benefit from hiring and placing nighttime economy advocates in many of Ireland’s communities.
Imagine your country’s national elected officials doing the same, not just for pandemic recovery, but to help make cities and towns safer, more inclusive, and more cultural and economically vibrant at night.
In this episode of Nighttime Economy, we speak with one of Ireland’s nighttime economy advocates, placed in Louth County, and the city of Drogheda. Meet Mark Davies.

Andjani Triloki: Amsterdam's Innovative Hosts Program
Nighttime Economy
09/10/22 • 22 min
Cities across the US are looking for solutions to help deter crime, reduce nuisance and create an atmosphere of hospitality in their nightlife districts.
Amsterdam's Hosts may be the ideal program to model.
Hosts welcome visitors, answer questions and address nuisance-causing visitors about their behavior. Their presence in two of Amsterdam's most active nightlife districts has resulted in 20% reduction in alcohol-related incidents and a 40% decrease in nuisance reports.
Plus, Hosts serve as the eyes and the ears of their employer, the City of Amsterdam. They reduce costs of police enforcement and do not create an atmosphere of intimidation.
In this episode of 24Minutes from 24HourNation, we talk with Andjani Triloki, Coordinator of the Hosts program for the City of Amsterdam’s Wallen and Rembrandtplein districts.
We break the Hosts program down in a way that could help you build a program up in your city.
Plus, Andjani reminds us of one big difference between The Netherlands and the USA that needs to be taken into consideration.

Lutz Leichsenring: Create a Manifesto for Nightlife
Nighttime Economy
09/29/22 • 23 min
Over the course of a year, VibeLab convened 120 visionaries in 55 cities and ten focus groups representing the global nighttime community.
Their goal was to create a document that can give nighttime advocates reasons why nightlife is important as we chart the future and navigate public health, political and environmental challenges.
The result is VibeLab's global nighttime manifesto. The document positions nightlife and our nighttime culture as essential, if undervalued.
"United by common values and visions, let us rise up together and foster a more meaningful reality and resilient future for nightlife around the world."
In this episode of 24 Minutes from 24HourNation, learn about the global nighttime manifesto as we talk with Lutz Leichsenring, co-founder and partner of VibeLab. Lutz is also spokesman and an executive board member for Berlin Clubcommission.
Download a PDF of the document here.

We have questions:
- What exactly is placemaking or creative placemaking?
- When it comes to art that is created for — and found in — public settings, what is the difference between graffiti, murals, and street art?
- How can public places and urban art be shaped in ways that are inclusive and respectful of those who will interact with them the most?
- And what does any of this have to do with our cities and neighborhoods at night?
We will find out the answers to these questions in this episode of 24 Minutes from 24HourNation. We talk with Kady Yellow, Senior Director of Creative Placemaking & Events for Downtown Vision, Inc. in Jacksonville, Florida.
Kady’s fascinating backstory offers great insight as to why she is such a valuable link between policymakers and those who are often left out of community decisions.
As a bonus, Kady also gives us an introductory class in outside-of-the-museum urban art. We get history and details about:
- Graffiti art
- Muralism
- Street Art
Moreover, we learn how murals can have both a positive and negative effect on neighborhoods and public spaces. That’s a nuance especially worth listening for by commercial developers and city leaders as we hear from Kady Yellow.

Tanith: Techno, DJs, Clubs … and Ageism
Nighttime Economy
03/13/24 • 26 min
This podcast episode is the result of a serendipitous encounter on social media.
I’ll explain once I get underway.
But what caught my attention is a surprising blip of discrimination that has begun to appear on the diverse and inclusive radar of nighttime and cultural economies.
Imagine being an artist and someone looking at you as if you’re too old to be an artist anymore.
In this episode of Nighttime Economy, we speak with high-profile Berlin DJ, Tanith. He will not only school me a bit on techno dance music [chuckle] he will also tell the tale of hearing someone tell him, "You’re the last of the old ones."
Our topic is ageism at night. More specifically, age discrimination in the world of techno music, DJs, and dance culture.

Randall White: Thank you ... and good night
Nighttime Economy
05/07/24 • 6 min
On May 31, 2024, I bring an end to 24HourNation and my advocacy work in the nighttime economy.
The 24HourNation website, social media, podcasts, webinar videos, and my participation in nighttime advocacy groups will all fade from view.
Before I peel off this path and disappear into the night, however, I thank all who have been a guest on one of sixty-five Nighttime Economy (née 24 Minutes) podcast episodes and/or a panelist on one of fourteen webinars. And I thank you for following along.
In this short and final Nighttime Economy podcast episode, I summarize the ground we have covered since 24HourNation launched two years ago. I also highlight four nighttime and cultural ecosystem challenges that, if addressed well, could strengthen cities of all sizes, around the world, and around the clock.
Even for this former practicing alcoholic and addict ‒ who has not been clubbing since they stopped playing Donna Summer's "Last Dance" ‒ there are few experiences as invigorating as heading out on foot into all the sights, sounds, and aromas of a city under a moonlit sky. If you come looking for me, that is where you will find me.
Thank you, again.
