Bobby Kotick Set To Retire In 2023 From Activision Blizzard After Microsoft Buyout

Bobby Kotick will remain chief executive of Activision Blizzard while Microsoft closes its deal to acquire the embattled publisher of Call of Duty, World of Warcraft, and Overwatch. When the $68.7 billion deal is finalized in 2023, “the Activision Blizzard business” will report to Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer, Microsoft said.
But it remains unclear what Kotick’s position at Activision Blizzard, if he still has one, will be after the proposed buyout is completed. The companies say only that Kotick will remain CEO through Microsoft’s 2023 fiscal year, which ends June 30, 2023. Kotick told The New York Times that he “will be available as needed” after the closing.
A new Wall Street Journal report Tuesday, citing sources familiar with the deal, says that the companies have agreed that Kotick will leave “once the deal closes.” If he’s no longer with Activision afterward, his employment contract calls for him to receive a severance package worth nearly $293 million should he lose his job to a corporate takeover, according to financial documents. Reached for comment, a Microsoft representative told Polygon that, “given the extended close time,” the company has nothing more to add, instead pointing to Spencer’s initial statement announcing the deal.
What we know for sure is that for Kotick will remain Activision Blizzard’s CEO until the Microsoft deal is signed — something that could take more than a year to do. “This is going to get a lot of regulatory scrutiny,” LightShed Ventures analyst and partner Brandon Ross told Polygon. It will need to be evaluated in the United States, but also in Europe, Ross said, where merger and acquisition standards are high. For instance, U.K. regulators are trying to block the $400 million acquisition of GIF search engine Giphy by Meta (the company formerly named Facebook).

Halo Subreddit Will Carve You A New Poop Chute

Once again, the angry gamers are angry and yelling and being just the worst. This time it’s happening over on Reddit. Specifically, the main Halo subreddit, r/Halo, which has been locked until Monday due to how angry and toxic most of the posts and comments have been recently following Halo Infinite’s launch last month.
Halo Infinite’s multiplayer launched on November 15. It was a nice surprise and a lot of people jumped online and began playing and what they found was pretty good. However, if you hopped over to r/Halo over the last week or so it would seem like 343 had released the worst video game ever made that also gave you cancer if you touched it based on how some players were yelling 24/7 about it and every one of its big and small problems and shortcomings.
And as you might expect, with this being the internet, sides began to form, and people who enjoyed the game also began to attack and yell 24/7 in an effort to... well, there isn’t really a point to angry posts on Reddit, but many of the nearly one million Redditors who are part of r/Halo were locked in a worthless war of words, firing insults at each other and the devs behind Infinite. Folks began sending threats, namecalling and attempting to dox folks they disagreed with or disliked. It got so bad that last night, the mods of r/Halo made the decision to lock the entire subreddit down until Monday.
“On all sides this has absolutely gone on long enough and spiraled out of control,” posted r/Halo mod 343-Guilty-Spark last night.

Is Selling A PS5 Worth Getting Shot Over?

We’re a year after release and the PS5 is still hard to find, which means the consoles already out there are a hot commodity. Sadly, this has led to a heated resale culture around the machine, and even more sadly in this case, it has resulted in a 19 year-old being shot when trying to sell one.
As ABC13 reports, a young man from Harris County, Texas had listed his PlayStation 5 console for sale online over the weekend, where a supposedly interested buyer had seen the ad and made contact.

Would It Be Okay To Pay or Vote To Boot Players You Watch? Sony Has A Patent For Just That

Would It Be Okay To Pay or Vote To Boot Players You Watch? Sony Has A Patent For Just That
In 2020, Sony filed a patent for allowing livestream spectators and participants to remove players from a game. Yesterday, the United States Patent and Trademark Office approved the patent, which you can read in full here. Besides removing unskilled players, the system would allow spectators to pay for the privilege of removing players.
Twitch is the most popular streaming platform in the world, and competitive esports is immensely popular. Considering that Sony filed an online tournament patent this year and bought Evo, the world’s largest fighting game competition, it’s clear that the PlayStation-maker is taking competitive gaming more seriously than it did in the past. An approved patent doesn’t mean that Sony is necessarily developing a “benching” system right now. It just gives the company exclusivity if it ever decides to implement one in the future.
In the patent document, Sony outlined a system in which spectators to a livestream can vote to remove a player from an ongoing game. The player would have no veto power over this decision, and they may be reassigned to a different match. The system would display the skill level of the current players and their statistics for the game, such as time played, ratings, and achievements. All of this would take place through “the cloud gaming system,” whatever that means.
To avoid audience abuse of this system, a 60% voting threshold needs to be met in order to bench a player from a game. Spectators with a higher skill level will also have their votes counted more heavily in the election. Despite Sony claiming that this system would be beneficial for removing disrespectful “griefers” from matches, the patent also includes the ability for spectators to pay a fixed price or bid for the ability to remove players from a game. The text also mentions a system in which spectators can warn active players to improve their gameplay. Damn.

Console Wars Has Reached An All Time Low

Console Wars Has Reached An All Time Low
During a period of time when both the PS5 and Xbox Series X are selling extremely well and previewing extremely good looking games, dedicated console fanboys are still finding the need to poke holes in each other’s upcoming offerings. Yesterday offered a rare look at this eternal struggle with two manufactured “controversies” unfolding in the same day, two points of criticism aimed at Sony and Microsoft respectively which are frankly, some of the dumbest takes I’ve ever seen in years. And I’ve been watching fanboy flame wars for a long time.

GTA5 For PS5 Literally Is A Cash Grab

GTA5 For PS5 Literally Is A Cash Grab
Yesterday, during a big PlayStation Showcase event that featured a bunch of new games like God of War Ragnarok, we got a new trailer for the next-gen release of Grand Theft Auto V. It wasn’t very good, and the GTA community is letting everyone know about it. At one point on Thursday, GTA was trending on social media—but it was almost entirely complaints from aggravated fans. It seems Rockstar has finally broken the GTA fanbase’s faith and resolve.
Fast forward over a year later. After 14 months of nearly complete radio silence about GTA V E&E, Rockstar finally releases a new trailer that... doesn’t share any new details, doesn’t seem to show an enhanced version worth spending more money on at all, and, to add icing on the cake, there’s now also a delay for it. E&E was planned to come out in November 2021. Now it’s coming out in March 2022, nearly two years after it was first announced. This is roughly the same amount of time between Rockstar’s first GTA V teaser back in 2011 and its eventual (and first) release in 2013 on PS3 and Xbox 360. Even weirder, and frustrating to many fans as well, is how this new trailer still doesn’t show us much in the way of enhanced visuals or go into any detail about what Rockstar is improving.
The thing is, I’m not sure this trailer is the main reason fans and diehard GTA players have turned so uniformly and harshly on Rockstar. Instead, this situation is more like the straw that broke the camel’s back. Red Dead Online has historically either been neglected, or worse, is barely playable. And after years of waiting for news about GTA 6, getting the billionth re-release of GTA V, and the growing resentment towards GTA Online, it seems that the PlayStation event finally broke the fandom’s collective spirit. Couple this with the stark reality that Rockstar just doesn’t release new games very often anymore, and you’ve got a recipe for an unhappy community. This is a community desperate for crumbs and Rockstar can’t even be bothered to provide them with that.
