Annie Dyer (aka Amelia Dyer) was considered a prolific baby murderer in her day. She had been subjected to time in a mental asylum and to some extent claimed that those expereinces had broken her.

The Story of: The Naval Surgeon Sentenced for Sodomy
Sodomy, and the persecution thereof, was a prevalent theme in the newspapers thorughout the 19th century. Stories related to the charge are everywhere.
This case in particular was noted in that the officer is shushed from mentioning high profile names of known personages engaging in sodomy (there was a club in London specifically for like-minded men to meet).

Stabbed in the Throat
In 1888, Whitechapel was renowned for the poverty and the violence - especially directed towards women.
This case, although unrelated to Jack the Ripper, is one of the many violent crimes in this general location at this time.
