Chilling Charles Boyle
News of the Times Episode 308 | 1924
A young girl, upon arriving back to the flat shared with her mother, finds herself unable to get in. Impatiently knocking on the door and receiving no response, she goes to a neighbour and borrows the ley.
Opening the door reveals a scene of horror with her mother, and two neighbour children, lying in pools of blood – their throats horrible slashed.
This shocking story at the time was used as an impetus to attempt to renew efforts of support to lower income families and give aid to those in the tenement areas of Glasgow. The story of alcoholism, deprivation, and mental illness was both disturbing and horrific.
We have kept the language of the day, some of which most certainly and quite rightly is inappropriate today. As always, we look to history as a barometer of how far, or not so far, we have come.

Forgotten Fridays 1879-1881
In todays episode of Forgotten Fridays we look at some of the stories hitting the headlines in 1879 to 1881. The execution of Charles Peace (the full story is currently in production) was splashed across all the papers everywhere. The world of females striving to get the vote and being classed under the label as “lunatics” for pursuing that wish, and suggested cooking lessons for the poor – specifically for women coming home after a 12 hours shift in the factories.

The Story of: The Naval Surgeon Sentenced for Sodomy
Sodomy, and the persecution thereof, was a prevalent theme in the newspapers thorughout the 19th century. Stories related to the charge are everywhere.
This case in particular was noted in that the officer is shushed from mentioning high profile names of known personages engaging in sodomy (there was a club in London specifically for like-minded men to meet).
