New Song Church Exists To Help People Know God. Many people today know about God, but they don’t know Him in the personal way He can and wants to be known. He feels distant and more like a historical figure than a close friend. New Song Church OKC - Stronger - Worship Must Be Stronger Than Idolatry
play

09/27/22 • 54 min

“Worship Must Be Stronger Than Idolatry”

Idolatry is the worship of idols?

Idolatry the worship of someone or something other than God as though it were God.

Worship - To kneel, to bow, to lay face down in reverence.

Worship Is Kingship Expressed

Romans 1:18-25 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. 19 For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. 20 For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. 21 For although they knew God, they did not worship him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Claiming to be wise, they became fools, 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things. 24 Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, 25 because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen.

Idolatry is a Disorder

Romans 1:21 For although they knew God, they did not worship him as God

Exodus 20:3 You shall have no other Gods before me.

Luke 10:27 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’

Matthew 6:33 Seek the Kingdom of God above all else

An Idol is anything we place above God in our life...

Tim Keller
And idol is anything more important to you than God, anything that absorbs your heart and imagination more than God, anything you seek to give you what only God can give. We think idols are bad things, but that's almost never the case. The greater, the good, the more likely we are to expect that it can satisfy our deepest needs and hopes. Anything can serve as a counterfeit God, especially the very best things in life.

David Foster Wallace
In the day-to day trenches of adult life, there is actually no such thing as atheism. There is no such thing as not worshipping. Everybody worships. The only choice we get is what to worship. And the compelling reason for maybe choosing some sort of god or spiritual-type thing to worship is that pretty much anything else you worship will eat you alive. If you worship money and things, if they are where you tap real meaning in life, then you will never have enough, never feel you have enough. Worship your own body and beauty and sexual allure and you will always feel ugly, and when time and age start showing, you will die a million deaths before they finally plant you. Worship power, you will end up feeling weak and afraid, and you will need ever more power over others to numb you to your own fear. Worship your intellect, being seen as smart, you will end up feeling stupid, a fraud, always on the verge of being found out. On one level, we all know this stuff already - The trick is keeping the truth up front in daily consciousness."

A disordered life leads to an “out of order” life.

John 15:5 apart from me you can do nothing

1. Idols Deceive

Romans 1:21-22 They became futile in their thinking, 22 Claiming to be wise, they became fools

Idols function as counterfeits

Jeremiah 29:13 “You will find me when you seek me with ALL your heart.”

You’re as close to God as you choose to be.

James 4:8 Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.

WHEN YOU KNOW THE REAL YOU CAN SPOT THE FAKE

2. Idols Disconnect

Romans 1:18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. 24 Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity

Active wrath of God

The passive wrath of God is God backing away to allow people to experience the results of their rebellion.

Romans 1:24 Therefore God gave them up

Proverbs 14:12 There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death.

1. 1. Repent

Acts 3:19 Repent, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord,

Metanoia
Meta = change | Noia = mind

To repent means, I change my mind.

Romans 12:2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind

1. 2. Take An Aggressive Stance Against Idols

Deuteronomy 12:3 Tear down their altars, smash their sacred pillars, burn up their Asherah poles, cut down the idols of their gods, and wipe out their names from every place.

Take An Aggressive Stance Against Idols

New Song Church OKC - Within - Praying With The Spirit
play

11/11/19 • 46 min

1 Corinthians 14:23 So if the whole church comes together and everyone speaks in tongues, and inquirers or unbelievers come in, will they not say that you are out of your mind?

1 Corinthians 14:2 For one who speaks in a tongue speaks not to men but to God; for no one understands him, but he utters mysteries in the Spirit.

1 Corinthians 14:14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful. 15 What is the conclusion then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will also pray with the understanding. I will sing with the spirit, and I will also sing with the understanding.

16 Otherwise, if you bless with the spirit, how will he who occupies the place of the uninformed say “Amen” at your giving of thanks, since he does not understand what you say? 17 For you indeed give thanks well, but the other is not edified.

#1 It Is Scriptural

1 Corinthians 14:2 For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God,

You Can Speak Fluently The First Day

You Can't Control It

praying in the spirit is a choice,

1 Corinthians 14:14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful.

1 Corinthians 14:15 What is the conclusion then? I will and I will also pray with the understanding.

I Could Get A Demon

Luke 11:11-13 If a son asks for bread from any father among you, will he give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent instead of a fish? 12 Or if he asks for an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? 13 If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!”

Luke 10:19 Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you.

Some People Have It, Some People Don’t

Romans 2:11 For there is no partiality with God.

Acts 10:34 God doesn't show favoritism

#2 It Is A Benefit

1. It Builds You Up

1 Corinthians 14:4 He who speaks in a tongue edifies (or builds up) himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church.

Jude 20 But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit,

Ephesians 6:13 Take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

14 Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; 16 above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. 17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; 18 praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit

2. It covers your ignorance

Matthew 6:8 For your Father knows the things you have need of before you ask Him. 9 In this manner, therefore, pray

Prayer is a legal

Romans 8:26 Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession f

You’ll notice the art for this series is an iceberg... and we used that because SLIDE ICEBERG 01 because when you see an iceberg only 10% of the iceberg is visible above the surface at any time... SLIDE ICEBERG 02 And that 10 really represents the external activity of your life it's the decisions, and the behaviors that everybody can see.

So on the surface... we look pretty good... But notice 90 percent of the iceberg is hidden under water SLIDE ICEBERG 03 and that represents what's really going on deep beneath the surface of our lives...

Hebrews 12:1 Let us run with endurance the race God has set before us.

1 Corinthians 9:24 Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize.

If the enemy cannot make you BAD, he’ll make you BUSY.” ― Corrie Ten Boom

Sin and busyness have the exact same effect

“Being busy is a condition of our outer world (having many things to do). Being hurried is a problem of the soul. It’s being so preoccupied with myself and what myself has to do that I am no longer able to be fully present with God with myself, and with other people. I am unable to occupy the present moment. Busyness migrates to hurry when we let it squeeze God out of our lives. . . I cannot live in the kingdom of God with a hurried soul. I cannot rest in God with a hurried soul.” ― John Ortberg

Hurry is hurting you and the people around you!

“Hurry is violence on the soul.” ― John Mark Comer

Proverbs 19:2 A person in a hurry makes mistakes.
Proverbs 21:5 Hurry and scurry puts you further behind.

Jeremiah 2:25 Slow down. Take a deep breath. What’s the hurry? Why wear yourself out? Just what are you after anyway?

Matthew 11:25-30 Are you tired? Are you worn out? Are you burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you'll recover your life. I'll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me. Watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won't lay anything heavy or ill fitting on you. 01. REST WAS MODELED IN HOW GOD DESIGNED

Genesis 2:1 Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array. 2 By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work.

02. REST WAS MODELED IN WHAT GOD DESIGNED

Genesis 1:3 Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. 4 And God saw the light, that it was good; and God divided the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light Day, and the darkness He called Night. So the evening and the morning were the first day.

Genesis 1:8 So the evening and the morning were the second day.
Genesis 1:13 So the evening and the morning were the third day.
Genesis 1:19 So the evening and the morning were the fourth day. Genesis 1:23 So the evening and the morning were the fifth day.
Genesis 1:31 So the evening and the morning were the sixth day.

03. REST WAS MODELED FOR WHO GOD DESIGNED

Exodus 20:8 “Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God.

04. REST WAS MODELED BY THE ONE WHO DESIGNED

Genesis 1:1 “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.”

John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.

John 1:14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

Research that attempts to quantify the relationship between hours worked and productivity found that employee output falls sharply after a 50-hour work-week, and falls off a cliff after 55 hours—so much so that someone who puts in 70 hours produces nothing more with those extra 15 hours.

New Song Church OKC - Battles - Week 07 - The Battle for Humility
play

07/22/18 • 40 min

1 Peter 5:5 Likewise, you younger people, submit yourselves to your elders. Yes, all of you be submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility

1.Pride is the calling card of the Devil

1 Chronicles 21:1-9 Now Satan stood up against Israel, and moved David to [a]number Israel. 2 So David said to Joab and to the leaders of the people, “Go, number Israel from Beersheba to Dan, and bring the number of them to me that I may know it.” 3 And Joab answered, “May the Lord make His people a hundred times more than they are. But, my lord the king, are they not all my lord’s servants? Why then does my lord require this thing? Why should he be a cause of guilt in Israel?” 4 Nevertheless the king’s word prevailed against Joab. Therefore Joab departed and went throughout all Israel and came to Jerusalem. 5 Then Joab gave the sum of the number of the people to David. All Israel had one million one hundred thousand men who drew the sword, and Judah had four hundred and seventy thousand men who drew the sword. 6 But he did not count Levi and Benjamin among them, for the king’s [b]word was abominable to Joab. 7 And [c]God was displeased with this thing; therefore He struck Israel. 8 So David said to God, “I have sinned greatly, because I have done this thing; but now, I pray, take away the iniquity of Your servant, for I have done very foolishly.”

We lose our intimacy with God when we walk in pride

2.God hates pride and actively resists it.

Proverbs 6:16-19 These six things the Lord hates, Yes, seven are an abomination to [h]Him: 17 A[i] proud look, A lying tongue, Hands that shed innocent blood, 18 A heart that devises wicked plans, Feet that are swift in running to evil, 19 A false witness who speaks lies, And one who sows discord among brethren

James 4:6-10 But He gives more grace. Therefore He says: “God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble.” 7 Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. 8 Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded. 9 Lament and mourn and weep! Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. 10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up.

1 Peter 5:5-8 Likewise, you younger people, submit yourselves to your elders. Yes, all of you be submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility, for “God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you. 8 Be [c]sober, be [d]vigilant; [e]because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.

Curse of Pride: God resists us, Satan attacks us, We have no spiritual authority.

How do we defeat Pride? We Worship.

Psalms 103:1-14 Bless the Lord, O my soul; And all that is within me, bless His holy name! 2 Bless the Lord, O my soul, And forget not all His benefits: 3 Who forgives all your iniquities, Who heals all your diseases, 4 Who redeems your life from destruction, Who crowns you with lovingkindness and tender mercies, 5 Who satisfies your mouth with good things, So that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s. 6 The Lord executes righteousness And justice for all who are oppressed. 7 He made known His ways to Moses, His acts to the children of Israel. 8 The Lord is merciful and gracious, Slow to anger, and abounding in mercy. 9 He will not always strive with us, Nor will He keep His anger forever. 10 He has not dealt with us according to our sins, Nor punished us according to our iniquities. 11 For as the heavens are high above the earth, So great is His mercy toward those who fear Him; 12 As far as the east is fro

New Song Church OKC - Declutter Your Life - The Closet
play

05/06/19 • 43 min

Our closets are places that we interact with on a daily basis.

Closets accumulate stuff.

All this stuff we accumulate in our closets... takes up space.

When I push my closet to it’s limits, it gets chaotic.

People today sleep two and a half fewer hours on average each night than they did 100 years ago.

The average work week in America is actually longer than it was in the 50 years ago.

The average office worker, has over 36 hours of work piled up on their desk and they spend about three hours a week just sorting through it to find different things.

44% of Americans feel more stressed than they did 5 years ago

1 in 5 Americans experience EXTREME stress (hands shaking, heart palpitations, depression)

60% of all disease and illness is caused by stress.

3 out of 4 doctors visits are for stress related ailments.

1 Corinthians 14:33 For God is not a God of confusion but of peace.
* confusion - disorder, chaos, clutter

1 Corinthians 14:40 But all things should be done decently and in order.

#1 MARGIN CREATES ORDER.

#2 MARGIN ALLOWS INTERACTION

01. You have limitations

Psalm 119:96 I have learned that everything has limits...

02. Throw/Put Things Away Regularly

Hebrews 12:1 let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.

The closet is seasonal.

Ecclesiastes 3:1 For everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under heaven...

Ecclesiastes 3:6 a time to keep, and a time to cast away

John 15 1 “I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. 2 Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit.

1 Cor. 6:12 Everything is permissible for me – but not everything is beneficial.

3. Give Jesus Closet Access

Philippians 4:6 Never worry about anything. Instead in every situation let God know what you need in your prayers and in your requests.

Prayer Lets God In

Revelations 3:20 Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me.

“A day without prayer is a boast against God.”

John 15:5 “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.

God is an invite only God,

Prayer = A conversation with God.

Matthew 11:28-30 “Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. New Song Church OKC - Dual Citizen - Flipping The Script
play

09/28/20 • 49 min

The will of God is the kingdom of Heaven in operation in our life and through our life in this world, today.

The Kingdom Of Heaven is anywhere that the rule of God is taking place.

The Kingdom of Heaven upsets the world in major ways, and effects the world in major ways.

If we’re going to walk in the fullness of our assignment in the kingdom of God, we cannot walk in step with the culture of this world.

Flipping The Script

Colossians 3:1 Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.

3 For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.

5 Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. 6 Because of these, the wrath of God is coming. 7 You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. 8 But now you must also rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. 9 Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices 10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator.

Life comes from above.

Genesis 1:7 God made this space to separate the waters of the earth from the waters of the heavens.

1. LIVE UP

4 When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.

Hebrews 10:14For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.

2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.

I spend my life on earth continually becoming who I already am in Heaven.

As a Christian I get to choose the Kingdom I live from.

Proverbs 23:7 For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he.

2. KILL OFF

Colossians 3:5 Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry.

Romans 8:13 For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.

live = means to enjoy real life, to have true life, endless life, in the kingdom of God.

3. PUT ON

Colossians 3:10 Put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator.

Romans12:1-2 So here’s what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life—your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life—and place it before God as an offering. Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for him. Don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You’ll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what he wants from you, and quickly respond to it. Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturity in you.”
