Rhiannon Gilvarry: Navigating the J-1 Graduate Visa
Navigating New York
10/07/24 • 57 min
Delighted to welcome Rhiannon Gilvarry, a recent MSc Digital Marketing Graduate UCD as my guest for Episode 7! Originally from Dublin, Rhiannon is currently in New York on her J-1 Graduate Visa, and it’s been a pleasure to watch her journey unfold since she arrived in the city.
I’ve had the opportunity to meet many of our recent graduates through Navigating New York's partnership with the Graduate Gateway program. The Graduate Gateway is a fantastic resource for J-1 graduates looking to connect, find employment, and build their professional networks in NYC. They host events and promote J-1 graduates to potential employers on LinkedIn. You can learn more about this incredible program here: Graduate Gateway, and check out their LinkedIn page here: Graduate Gateway LinkedIn.
I had the pleasure of meeting Rhiannon shortly after she arrived in NYC, and her drive and determination have been inspiring to witness. She’s worked tirelessly to find the right job for her visa, all while saying “yes” to extra opportunities and building valuable skills along the way. In just one year, she’s built a professional network and made the most of her time in New York—truly embodying the hustle mentality.
In this episode, Rhiannon shares invaluable tips on finding a place to live, applying for jobs, navigating interviews, adjusting to American work culture, and building your professional profile during your J-1 year in NYC. Whether you're a J-1 graduate yourself or just curious about what it’s like to navigate this journey, Rhiannon’s advice is sure to inspire and guide you.
I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did!

Navigating New York with Big Shane
Navigating New York
06/16/21 • 71 min
On this week’s Episode I chat to the Legend Shane Kenny, aka Big Shane.
Shane is is originally from County Meath and moved to the US in 2016 where he started off on a Graduate Visa after College teaching rugby to kids in L.A. After that he made the move to New York City and immediately felt like he had found a home away from home.
Shane started out bartending in Queens and Manhattan on arrival in 2017. A big man at 6’7, Shane is known around New York as Big Shane, because of his gentle giant nature and larger than life personality.
In 2020 Shane and his partner and professionally trained pastry chef Sarah Pleitez made what was originally a bit of a running joke between them in to a Business, and created and launched Big Shane’s Icecream - Icecream inspirited by Irish tastebuds.
For as long as Shane can remember he has loved ice cream. Growing up, he spent many an Irish summer day in Ballivor with a 99 Cone in hand (also known as a soft serve in America).
Fast forward one year and Big Shane’s Icecream is taking off in a big way. It can be bought by the pint or single serve in various locations around Manhattan and Queens check out all the locations on bigshanesicecream.com
In August 2020 Shane got a big blow when he was diagnosed with Stage 3 Testicular Cancer. Shane underwent surgery and chemo all during Covid and at the young age of 27, being far away from home and without health insurance – it was a horrendous time for him. However, a testament to how well-loved he is, in less than 24 hours his friends and the Irish American Community in Sunnyside Queens raised over $30,000 for him through Go Fund Me.
Shane is now in remission and his ice-cream business is getting bigger by the day, they have now outgrown their own space and have moved production to a manufacturer on a farm Upstate. Soon you will be able to get Big Shane’s Icecream Nationwide! You can also book Big Shane’s icecream for events and pop ups.
This man is destined for great things, and I hope you get as much from our chat as I did!

Fáilte ar ais go Navigating New York! On this episode I chat to TikTok sensation @Vivienne_in_nyc
Vivienne is a new arrival to the Big Apple and her energy and enthusiasm is infectious! It is truly mind blowing to see what Vivienne has achieved in less than a year here - Vivienne is a brilliant example of what you can achieve with a little bit of self belief and, as she puts it, some "chancing of the arm"!
Even as someone almost a decade older, I draw so much inspiration from Vivienne - she is unapolegitcally authentic, and that authenticity has amassed her over 150,000 followers on TikTok!
Through social media, Vivienne is promoting the Irish Language and making Irish culture more accessible to an Irish American audience.

Navigating New York with Mickey Coleman
Navigating New York
09/09/21 • 58 min
On this week’s Episode I chat to Mickey Coleman, a well-known &respected Tyrone man living in New York for 10 years. Mickey has two All Ireland Football Medals with Tyrone from 2003 and 2005, and is still very involved in the GAA here in New York with his club. Rockland.
When he moved to New York Mickey met his now wife Erin, and the pair have two gorgeous young sons. Mickey and Erin are both musicians and Erin runs her own School of Irish Music & Arts. On top of all of that, Mickey owns his own construction company Shoreline Builders and has navigated his journey in New York very impressively.
However, just 5 months ago everything changed for Mickey when he suffered what’s known as a widow maker heart attack, a form of heart attack with only a 6% survival rate .At just 41 years of age and a very fit and healthy father of 2, the heart attack completely changed Mickey's approach to life.
We chat about what Mickey calls a spiritual awakening, and a new approach to life that encompasses 3 main areas of wellness, physical, mental and spiritual. Mickey’s recovery and heart functionality has stumped his doctors and he tells me why he thinks a plant based diet is medicine for the body.
Mickey and Erin have set up an Instagram page called @heartyplantbasedfood which is an account full of food recipes they believe will change your Health & Wellbeing.
We chat about all of this but not before I get Mickey’s predictions on the All-Ireland Final this Saturday between Tyrone and Mayo!
I hope you enjoy!

Navigating New York with Maurice Barron
Navigating New York
02/02/21 • 49 min
On Episode 2 of the Podcast I chat with my friend Maurice Barron. I met Maurice through our GAA Club here in New York, 'Manhattan Gaels' where he was a Founding Member and Chairperson. He moved to New York 16 years ago from County Waterford in Ireland and is a true example of what working hard and taking chances can do for your career. I have always looked up to Maurice as a great mentor and friend and am delighted to share our conversation with you.
Maurice is currently Vice President of Data & Platform Solutions at Zenith, and if like me you aren't sure what "Data & Platform Solutions" actually means, Maurice explains it for us!
He wouldn't say it himself but he is hugely successful in his industry and is flown around the World to do his job.
2020 was an extremely challenging year for Maurice and his wife Kandice as their baby girl Ava was diagnosed with Kidney Cancer. We talk about her battle during the height of Covid and how being in New York to get treatment possibly saved Ava's life. I hope you find Maurice's outlook on life as inspiring as I do.
