Rhiannon Gilvarry: Navigating the J-1 Graduate Visa
Navigating New York
10/07/24 • 57 min
Delighted to welcome Rhiannon Gilvarry, a recent MSc Digital Marketing Graduate UCD as my guest for Episode 7! Originally from Dublin, Rhiannon is currently in New York on her J-1 Graduate Visa, and it’s been a pleasure to watch her journey unfold since she arrived in the city.
I’ve had the opportunity to meet many of our recent graduates through Navigating New York's partnership with the Graduate Gateway program. The Graduate Gateway is a fantastic resource for J-1 graduates looking to connect, find employment, and build their professional networks in NYC. They host events and promote J-1 graduates to potential employers on LinkedIn. You can learn more about this incredible program here: Graduate Gateway, and check out their LinkedIn page here: Graduate Gateway LinkedIn.
I had the pleasure of meeting Rhiannon shortly after she arrived in NYC, and her drive and determination have been inspiring to witness. She’s worked tirelessly to find the right job for her visa, all while saying “yes” to extra opportunities and building valuable skills along the way. In just one year, she’s built a professional network and made the most of her time in New York—truly embodying the hustle mentality.
In this episode, Rhiannon shares invaluable tips on finding a place to live, applying for jobs, navigating interviews, adjusting to American work culture, and building your professional profile during your J-1 year in NYC. Whether you're a J-1 graduate yourself or just curious about what it’s like to navigate this journey, Rhiannon’s advice is sure to inspire and guide you.
I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did!

Vivienne Sayers O'Callaghan
Navigating New York
04/10/24 • 53 min
Fáilte ar ais go Navigating New York! On this episode I chat to TikTok sensation @Vivienne_in_nyc
Vivienne is a new arrival to the Big Apple and her energy and enthusiasm is infectious! It is truly mind blowing to see what Vivienne has achieved in less than a year here - Vivienne is a brilliant example of what you can achieve with a little bit of self belief and, as she puts it, some "chancing of the arm"!
Even as someone almost a decade older, I draw so much inspiration from Vivienne - she is unapolegitcally authentic, and that authenticity has amassed her over 150,000 followers on TikTok!
Through social media, Vivienne is promoting the Irish Language and making Irish culture more accessible to an Irish American audience.
If you are a newcomer to New York, or perhaps you are considering a new venture - you will get so much from this conversation!
Thank you so much for listening!

Navigating New York with Maurice Barron
Navigating New York
02/02/21 • 49 min
On Episode 2 of the Podcast I chat with my friend Maurice Barron. I met Maurice through our GAA Club here in New York, 'Manhattan Gaels' where he was a Founding Member and Chairperson. He moved to New York 16 years ago from County Waterford in Ireland and is a true example of what working hard and taking chances can do for your career. I have always looked up to Maurice as a great mentor and friend and am delighted to share our conversation with you.
Maurice is currently Vice President of Data & Platform Solutions at Zenith, and if like me you aren't sure what "Data & Platform Solutions" actually means, Maurice explains it for us!
He wouldn't say it himself but he is hugely successful in his industry and is flown around the World to do his job.
2020 was an extremely challenging year for Maurice and his wife Kandice as their baby girl Ava was diagnosed with Kidney Cancer. We talk about her battle during the height of Covid and how being in New York to get treatment possibly saved Ava's life. I hope you find Maurice's outlook on life as inspiring as I do.

Navigating New York with Sober St. Patrick's Day
Navigating New York
03/14/22 • 37 min
Happy St Patrick’s week! It is of course St Patrick’s day this Thursday and in honor of that this weeks episode is with two amazing women who are involved with a great organization in NY called Sober St. Patrick’s day. Today I chat to Executive Director of Sober St Patrick’s Day, Tami Ellen McLaughin and Board Member Elizabeth Stack. who is also the Executive Director of The Irish American Heritage Museum in Albany.
The ladies tell me what Sober St. Patrick's day is all about and everything going on with the group this Thursday in New York (and all year round!). We chat about the stereotype we as Irish people face globally and how although it is great to enjoy and celebrate St Patrick's Day – it is also important that we try not to feed in to the stereotype of being a Nation who’s culture revolves around alcohol. I really admire this group for creating a space to enjoy our Irish Culture and Heritage in a way that ensures St. Patrick’s Day is not seen as just an excuse for everyone to wear green and get drunk. What I particularly admire is that it's not a group that is anti-alcohol, but that it creates space to celebrate in an alternative way.
You can find out everything you need to know about Sober St Patrick's day by visiting their website www.soberstpatricksday.org or by following them on twitter @soberstpatsday and see how you can get involved with them to march in the parade, attend their post –parade party or join the celebrations virtually. I hope you enjoy!

Eamonn Coghlan Irish Olympian
Navigating New York
08/06/24 • 41 min
From Olympian to Humanitarian: Eamonn Coghlan's Journey is one to be inspired by! It was a pleasure to get to sit down with Eamonn, one of Ireland's all-time Great Athletes to discuss life as a kid in Ireland, his career defining move to America, and how Ireland perform in the 2024 Olympic games in Paris - almost 50 years on from Eamonn's first ever Olympic Games in 1976.
Eamonn is a long-time Ambassador and Patron for GOAL an Irish humanitarian agency founded by former Irish Press journalist, John O'Shea in 1977 when he saw the plight of street children in Kolkata (Calcutta) first-hand. Over the last 47 years GOAL has responded to many of the world's major humanitarian crises, working with vulnerable communities in more than 60 countries. I sat down with Eamonn in New York as GOAL launched their Great Ethiopia Run Challenge. The Great Ethiopia Run is a famous 10k run in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia at 9000ft altitude that takes place November 2024. Those taking on the challenge will complete the once in a lifetime run, as well as visit GOAL's humanitarian programs in Ethiopia to witness firsthand the impact of their support.
I really enjoyed chatting to Eamonn about his incredible impact on and off the track, including his contributions to the Irish-American community and many humanitarian and charitable Irish causes.

Navigating New York with Damien Dempsey
Navigating New York
12/03/22 • 41 min
I am really excited to introduce my guest for this episode, the one and only, Damien Dempsey. It was a dream come true to get to have this chat with Damien, described by many as the "Voice of a Generation."
If you’re a Damo fan, you’ll know that his song “Apple of My Eye” is all about his love for New York City - and in our conversation he tells me about how coming here as a young musician helped him to believe in himself and how he met some of his greatest friends and mentors here in the City.
As a young musician in Dublin, Damien felt that people looked down on him for writing songs about the social issues of modern-day Ireland, and for singing in his own accent. These are two important attributes that have come to define Damien as an Artist.
When he was in his twenties, Damien came to New York and played his songs in the famous Manhattan bar ‘Rocky Sullivan's’ – which attracted an eclectic group of artists, writers, NYPD officers, lawyers and politicians back in the day. Rocky’s was owned by a mutual friend of ours – retired NYPD Chief of Homicide and proud Irish American, Brian McCabe, who kindly made this episode possible.
When I started this podcast I had a list of ‘dream guests’ and Damien Dempsey was one of them - so I am beyond grateful that I got to have him on
In this episode Damien speaks honestly about the shame and guilt we have been forced to feel as a Nation, His respect for the Irish that travelled the world and set down a framework for future generations and the importance of spirituality, of travelling the world and how music can help us through life.
I really got so much from this conversation with Damo and I hope you find some comfort and inspiration from his message.
