Join us each week as we navigate the dance between past and present, weaving a narrative of hope, empowerment, and the unyielding strength that defines the journey to reclaim 'Native Land.' This week, hosts Andrew Gillum, Tiffany Cross, and Angela Rye start off with another brief update from Trump-trial land. Then onto a special message from Bernie Sanders to young voters—will it matter?

And speaking of political messaging, New York’s Governor Hochul’s cringe-worthy comments about “Black kids in the Bronx” this week. The hosts discuss the blindspots that sometimes exist with liberal white politicians.

And Gov Hochul isn’t the only politician garnering some controversy over racially-charged remarks. We got a reminder last week that some members of Congress are just straight up racist. And so we ask, are there white supremacists in Congress? Spoiler alert: yes, and the hosts will name a few.

In Politics Are Everywhere we examine violence and the ongoing beef between Kendrick Lamar and Drake. Given the drive-by shooting outside Drake’s house, the hosts ask: at what point does beef in hip hop culture go too far?

Last but so far from least, there’s a special guest on the show today...

Justice for Marilyn Mosby! Call the White House and ask for her pardon at 202-456-1111. Sign the petition, donate, and show your support at justiceformarilynmosby.com.

We are 179 number of days away from the election y’all, welcome home!

Native Land Pod - The State of Our Union is…
play

03/07/24 • 81 min

Welcome home y’all!

A spot for Nikki Haley voters with Biden? With Haley’s drop out of the presidential race, we look ahead at what’s to come for the two leading candidates following Super Tuesday.

And, President Biden is set to deliver his State of the Union address. We'll analyze what key messages we hope to hear and how they might impact his presidential bid.

In state politics, we spend a little time unpacking the rhetoric of North Carolina’s republican gubernatorial candidate Mark Robinson and the hosts differing views on how or whether to keep Trump supporters in the fold.

Plus, we'll delve deep into the controversy surrounding Marilyn Mosby, the Baltimore City State’s Attorney who prosecuted officers in the Freddie Gray case and implemented a robust reform agenda that law enforcement is still mad about.. Facing sentencing on trumped up charges in May, we have to ask how someone so right is treated so wrong?!

play

03/04/24 • 16 min

Welcome home y’all!

On this MiniPod hosts Angela Rye, Andrew Gillum and Tiffany Cross answer a question we’ve gotten many times: why “Native Land” Pod?

The hosts explain the inspiration behind the title of the show, and the show as a whole. Drawing from their own experience, they critique mainstream news, share how they came together, and why they felt they needed to create a new “home” for their audience.

You can find the lyrics to Lift Every Voice and Sing, the Black National Anthem, at this link.

The audio for this episode is from promotional material created for the launch of the podcast.

Native Land Pod - What is Project 2025?

What is Project 2025?

Native Land Pod

play

04/04/24 • 64 min

Welcome home!

This week hosts Angela Rye, Andrew Gillum, and Tiffany Cross turn their gaze towards Tennessee, where state lawmakers voted to fire the entire board of Tennessee State University last week. Does this have anything to do with the $2 billion dollars the state owes TSU, the state’s only publicly funded HBCU?! Probably.

Staying in the south, Crystal Mason recently ended her years-long battle with the Texas courts, who sentenced her to prison for FIVE YEARS just for trying to vote. In 2016, she cast a provisional ballot not knowing that it was illegal for her to do so since she was technically still under state supervision. Her life has been consumed by BS (excuse the language) legal battles ever since.

Y’all have been asking and now our hosts answer– what’s up with Project 2025? On this week’s deep dive, we dig into the woke-obsessed 900+ page document that outlines the republican plan to literally remake the federal government in their image. If Trump wins, the plan calls for him to replace tens of thousands of public employees in the FBI, Department of Justice, and more with conservative loyalists. They’re gearing up for war, y’all!

Stick around for Politics Are Everywhere, where the hosts discuss Washington State’s new Strippers’ Bill of Rights.

And as always, we’ll hear from you. Keep those questions and comments coming!!

Native Land Pod - TikTok Getting Banned?!
play

03/14/24 • 77 min

Welcome home y’all!

This week, hosts Angela Rye, Tiffany Cross and Andrew Gillum cover the TikTok ban, which overwhelmingly passed the House and awaits Senate action—why is it happening? The ACLU says the legislation violates the first amendment, Donald Trump is wavering, even though he was actually the first high ranking official to propose a ban on TikTok. Joe Biden said he’d sign the bill into law. The hosts offer their takes.

In election politics, no surprises— Trump and Biden officially clinched the nomination. The hosts do a deep dive into what a Trump versus a Biden presidency would look like by examining each of their proposed budgets as President Biden just dropped his off to Congress on Tuesday!

There’s also an update on Trump’s racketeering case in Georgia. That case could be affected by an impending Supreme Court Case that will decide if Trump enjoys broad “presidential” immunity for crimes committed while he was president. More on that in this and a later episode...

Finally, the hosts will answer your questions, and give an update on the former State’s Attorney, Marilyn Mosby. You can find her Go Fund Me page by clicking here, and we’ll update this description with info on the March 23rd rally later this week. That’s at the end of the episode, stick around.

Native Land Pod - Catch and Kill, The Right to Protest
play

04/25/24 • 79 min

This week hosts Angela Rye, Andrew Gillum, and Tiffany Cross go to the circus: Trump’s Trials. According to the trial testimony of David Pecker, Donald Trump participated in a “catch and kill” scheme with the National Enquirer. The paid scheme prevented them from publishing negative stories about him during the 2016 election. If only we were all so rich...we still wouldn’t do it! And at the Supreme Court, oral arguments begin to determine whether former President Trump is immune from criminal prosecution for acts committed while in office.

Protests against the war in Gaza have spread from Google to Morehouse, NYU, Columbia, Stanford, and Yale University (among others). What is up with framing the student-led, anti-war protests as antisemitic? We unpack it on the pod!

In Politics Are Everywhere, American Airlines has made it more difficult to qualify for their frequent flier points, and Angela and Tiff are NOT happy. Andrew asks, is this first world problems y’all?

And of course we’ll hear from you, our #NLPFam listeners! We are 193 days away from Election Day.

Welcome home y’all!

Native Land Pod - Welcome Back Trump

Welcome Back Trump

Native Land Pod

play

11/14/24 • 77 min

This week hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, and Andrew Gillum react to the results of the 2024 election and respond to your questions.

President Biden has begun the peaceful transition of power, in the oval office he told Trump, “Welcome back.” After telling voters that Trump is a threat to democracy, is this kind of civility appropriate?

Trump has already announced many of his cabinet picks. We’ll hear from those picks about what we can expect from a second Trump presidency.

Lastly, where does our show go from here? Should we even still have a show??

If you’d like to submit a question, check out our tutorial video: www.instagram.com/reel/C5j_oBXLIg0/

Welcome home y’all! 721 days until the midterms.

Native Land Pod - Unrest, Death Row, and Euphoria
play

05/02/24 • 78 min

This week, hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, and Andrew Gillum give a brief update on the Trump circus and his recent interview with Time Magazine.

Then onto news you won’t see on cable: what if hundreds of people–mostly Black men–were being slowly and painfully killed, and the government was in on it? An update on state-sanctioned lethal injections.

And guess who’s hiring? Police forces across the country, which have seen an increase in their ranks for the first time since 2020.

We’ve seen those police hard at work on college campuses, where they’ve been breaking up encampments as they arrest hundreds of students protesting the war in Gaza. The hosts unpack what we’re seeing unfold at schools across the country.

In Georgia, the battleground state is grappling with a new voter suppression law that could disenfranchise thousands and have dire consequences for the Biden administration.

Then, in Politics Are Everywhere, Tiffany delivers her signature sports expertise. There are big changes coming to how we watch NBA games; Tiffany has the details.

And of course, we’ll hear from you, our #NLPFan listeners. We are 186 days away from the election.

Welcome home y’all!

Native Land Pod - So We’re Prosecuting Fani Now?
play

02/22/24 • 55 min

Welcome home y’all!

On episode seven of Native Land Pod, Biden gets pushed on racial justice by black members of congress. Meanwhile, Trump launches a sneaker brand to help him pay off the $355 million dollars that he owes New York state. Plus, the hosts debate why some black voters are leaning towards Trump.

With the Michigan primary on the horizon, we want to know– who y’all got Michigan?? Rashida Tlaib calls for Michigan democrats not to vote for Biden. In Georgia, District Attorney Fani Willis answers questions about her relationship with her lead prosecutor in a closely followed election fraud case involving Trump and his allies. The romantic liaison could put the case in jeopardy, but new evidence favors Willis.

In Politics Are Everywhere– we have to talk about Beyoncé’s historic new country single, Texas Hold ‘Em. And the Alabama Supreme Court makes reference to God and the bible in a landmark ruling that declares that embryos are people.

Stick around for your questions at the end!

As always, we want to hear from you. Send us a video @nativelandpod and we may feature you on the podcast. What do you want Biden to cover in his State of the Union address?

Native Land Pod - Is This Space Really Safe? | MiniPod

This week hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, and Andrew Gillum ask themselves, is this show a safe space? What is our obligation as a show to create a safe space for ourselves and for the audience, and what does “safe space” mean, anyway?

This is a follow up from last week’s MiniPod that got a liiittle heated.
