Mystery on the Rocks

Chris Stokes, Masud Milas & Sooz Kempner

Hi there! We are Mystery on the Rocks, a comedy cocktail mystery podcast with award-winning comedians Sooz Kempner, Masud Milas and Chris Stokes ham-fistedly trying to solve real-life mysteries over cocktails.

Sometimes we're joined by a special guest, sometimes it's just the three of us being very silly indeed.

From true crime and bizarre occurrences to X-Files and the paranormal, all of the cases have a whodunnit or 'WTF happened' question hanging over them. So come in, pull up a chair, and let's crack this case!

In June 1997, screenwriter Gary DeVore vanishes without trace after finishing a script said to expose corruption in the CIA. A year later, his car is found submerged in an area of water already searched when he first went missing - an aqueduct below a busy highway. Not only that, investigators believe that in order to have crashed his car there he would have had to drive 3 miles into oncoming traffic. And the car's headlights were switched to 'off'.

Oh, and Gary's hands were missing. But this is only where the case *begins* to get strange....

At the Mystery on the Rocks bar you’ll find a retired sleuth, the bartender trying to settle his tab, and the down-on-her-luck lounge singer, solving mysteries and drinking cocktails. Each week a new guest enters the bar and attempts to solve an unsolved mystery alongside the regulars. Hosted by Masud Milas, Chris Stokes, and Sooz Kempner. It’s a high concept comedy and true crime podcast, set in a fictional crime-solving bar (with real cocktails!). The focus of the show is to attempt to crack a real, unsolved mystery from history – true crime and bizarre occurrences, all with a whodunnit or WTF happened question hanging over them. Masud makes the drinks, Chris tells the mystery and Sooz sings and plays live piano – and everyone chats and chimes in with their theories.

Slinking into the bar this week is none other than Nish Kumar. Critically acclaimed comic, internationally famed meme & wonderfully nice gentleman, Nish Kumar is a comedian, and a bloody good one at that. Since beginning his comedy career in 2006, Nish has achieved global success on the stand-up circuit with three rave reviewed solo stand-up shows receiving huge recognition from both industry & fans alike. In 2012 Nish’s debut solo show, ‘Who Is Nish Kumar?’ earned a spot on Dave’s ‘Ten Funniest Jokes of The Fringe’, a nomination for Best Show at the 2013 Leicester Comedy Festival & two sell-out runs at one of London’s most noted comedy haunts, The Soho Theatre. Since then he hasn’t stopped from appearing across our screens in many TV shows, and we’re very glad he managed to stumble into our joint.

Masud whipped up...

Filibuster

1.5oz Rye Whiskey

3⁄4 oz Lemon Juice

1⁄2 oz Maple Syrup

2 tbsp Aquafaba

Angostura Bitters

Add rye, lemon, maple syrup, and aquafaba to a cocktail shaker. “Dry shake” (that’s without ice) vigorously then add ice and shake again (this is a “wet shake”) strain into a coupe, garnish with angostura bitters.

Corpse Reviver

1oz Gin

1oz Cointreau

1oz Lillet

1oz Lemon Juice

Absinthe

Add a small amount of absinthe to a coupe glass and turn to coat the inside. In a mixing glass add the ingredients with ice and still until well chilled. Garnish with an orange twist.

Due to life/scheduling reasons, this week's episode isn't our regular programming. Instead of a mystery, this is a compilation of a tiny percentage of the extra just-chatting bonus stuff we put out on Patreon.

So join us in the members' lounge of the Mystery on the Rocks bar as we discuss the recent (when we recorded) Oscars hoo-ha, weird dreams, diarrhoea, the bombshell that Chris was a nerd at school, snail depression, forgotten kids' TV shows, and 9/11 conspiracy theories.

Tom Parry joins us in the beer garden this week as we take the show out into the open at Latitude Festival! Tom Parry is a comedian, writer and actor. He performs solo stand up, appearing on E4’s SHOW AND TELL, and his debut hour YELLOW T-SHIRT earned him an Edinburgh Comedy Award nomination for Best Newcomer and enjoyed a sold-out London run at the Soho Theatre. In 2019, he has returned to the Edinburgh Fringe with the hotly tipped PARRYOKE. For more than a decade, Tom has been working alongside Ben Clark and Matthew Crosby as part of the multi-award winning sketch team Pappy's, who we love dearly.

In 1986, the Swedish Prime Minister is shot dead walking back from the cinema.

His long career in politics saw him make a lot of international enemies but even so, the case has never been solved. Maybe because there are so many damn suspects and possible motives?

Including Yugoslavian intelligence, an arms deal scandal, Chilean extremists and more...

Mystery on the Rocks - Episode 175: The House vs Akio Kashiwagi
play

11/14/24 • 63 min

This week, we take a look at the brutal murder of Japanese businessman and high stakes gambler Akio Kashiwagi, stabbed (potentially up to 150 times) in his home in January 1992. One of the world's greatest gamblers, he rinsed several casinos enough to give them cause for concern that, for once, the house might not win...

As well as delving into which enemies he may have made enough to kill him, we also ask the burning question... Why was Peter Lorre a prominent cartoon character years after he passed away?
